web page widget doesn't show in preview?

I'd like to add a web page widget to an existing presentation. It doesn't show anything on the screen, so I click save and then preview and it still doesn't show anything. I don't dare publish it to the actual sign until I'm sure it is working. I've configured it to show http://www.google.com and other well known sites and nothing. It doesn't display. It is as if the placeholder isn't there.

Thinking there might be a problem with my presentation, I created a new one with just a clock widget and a web page widget and saved and published and then click preview. Still nothing. Why can't I see what the web page widget is trying to do?

That's interesting - can you provide a link to the presentation so we can look at that?

Here is the link: http://rva.risevision.com/#/PRESENTATION_MANAGE/id=30995461-c6a4-4f3b-9bc3-2d1e1e2d25ed?cid=d69e0aea...

I'm using Chrome on a Mac if that matters. Thanks for taking a look!

Hi - I duplicated your presentation and have been playing around with it.  When I use www.google.com or www.yahoo.com I get nothing either.  However, when I put in other web pages, they show fine.  Are you wanting to show Google as the web page or was that just a test web page you were using?

That's interesting, those are the two web pages I tried as well. I am now wondering if they do a HTML redirect or something that the widget doesn't follow.

I'm trying to show a few images that will update frequently (every half hour or so)  - here is an example http://www.utahdanceartists.com/digital-sign/instagram/instagram-uda-001.jpg . I was originally planning on putting together a simple HTML page with javascript to rotate through the images. But then I thought I'd just refer to the image itself. So maybe I need to play around with it a bit and put together a test page.

The reason I'm using the web page widget instead of an image placeholder is because the images will update and I understand the image placeholder doesn't refresh the cache until the sign is restarted.

Thanks for your help on this.

UDA Dev,

Some web pages will not display in the web page widget if they cannot be displayed in an iframe. That being said, if you're wanting to display rotating images, have you considered using the Image Folder Widget? You can upload images to Rise Storage, and the widget will play rotate through the images contained in that folder.

I'm aware of the Image Folder Widget, but this group doesn't want to pay for Rise Storage. They have their own webserver and I am able to upload to it and grab the images from there. If I was able to overcome that, does the image folder widget refresh the images in the cache? Alternatively, is there any ability to FTP or SCP/SFTP files to Rise Storage or some other remote action not in the web page?

UDA Dev,

Look @ this presentation http://preview.risevision.com/Viewer.html?type=presentation&id=c906816d-b77b-48d6-8f9f-2a856004d...

Maybe this is something you can utilize. I used this awesome free image slider tool to create it: http://wowslider.com/ . Basically, what u need to do is create a small webpage with the slider code in it (there also will be folder with images automatically created by the program). Then simply pull that page from anywhere on the Internet to your presentation with 'custom URL'. The programs is a bit tricky & crash-y, but really ease to use and have many options for customization.

Darius - thank you very much for this!  I'm sure a lot of people could take advantage of something like this.
