I have one presentation running at the same time in 5 displays , within this presentation I have a placeholder with a video folder widget that has inside 60 videos webm format (10 seconds each avg, about 14 minutes the whole folder) the problem is that at different times a black screen appears and takes about 30 or even more seconds to disappears and then continue playing.
I have tried to te rename each video to see if it was a tagging problem, but the same. The rest of the placeholders of the presentation are running ok. Since I,am testing the video widget, I have 8 different videos and I made copy of them to reach 60. All are ASUS Chromebox, 3 Celeron and 2 with i3, all with 8 GB RAM I,am going to test splitting the 60 videos in 3 folders...Any sugestion? thanks!

Hi Luis, thanks for the great info and I think your suggestion of breaking up those 60 videos into separate folders is a good idea. Would you please try that and let us know if that has different results?

As you try that we'll work on setting up your content to try and reproduce the issue. With that said, we are spread thin today and tomorrow so please bear with us as we work through this.

Thanks

Hi Alan, I have good news:
I let ON all night the devices, and from an hour ago that I arrived to my office and turn on the TV`s, everything is running smoothly  till now (almost 1 hour) So still doesn't understand very well what will be the best way to approach this "video widget" , but I guess in some way is normal that takes time to the get the whole info in the "cache"...

I have a question, if for example right now that it is running ok, if I add another video folder (10 more videos i.e.) when I update and publish, does Rise Vison will start again from zero uploading  or it just work to add the new folder?
thanks

Luis,

If you re-publish the presentation, only the new folder will be added to the cache. The other items will remain in the cache and will not be re-downloaded.

Suffering a similar problem on a venue WIFI network that typically experiences 5% or more packet loss throughout the day . Usually the videos take a while to finally cache and during that time, it appears that multiple videos will start to play. You will see one video but hear audio overlapping from 2 or possibly 3 simultaneously.

Currently there are 17 Videos in a folder. All are  webm. All are relatively small in dimension (< 720x 360px).  All are between 2 and 26 MB each (total folder payload is 146MB)

Displays/Players are all ASUS Chromeboxes (that are now running Ubuntu so...) we are using the new Linux Player.

Questions:
  • How do I check the condition of the cache? Is there a log that we can turn on that might shed some light on what is going on?
  • How does/should the cache behave if downloads are incomplete.. repeatedly?
  • My field service guy noticed that when we can remotely restart the player (not reboot), the files appear to reload from cache and video's audio overlap problem is usually rectified.
So, what is the best way to routinely schedule a player reload? Kill the rvplayer process in a cron job and wait for java to respawn it? I have tried using CURL or wget (as we did back in the old days) against the listener, but that has resulted in a series of continuous restarts and other undesirable side effects.

  • Last one: If I have a single placeholder in a single presentation that conatains 2 different video folder widgets; and one folder widget's content is only distributed to display 1 and the other folder widget's content is only distributed to display 2, how is caching handled at the display?  Does the presentation/placeholder cause display 1 & 2 to cache the content of both video folders even though a single display will only play one or the other?
If this is the wrong place to drop this question, I apologize.

Hi Dave, what you describe with the overlapping video/audio came up a few weeks ago and has since been corrected with the Video Widget.

Have migrated to the updated Video Widget or are you still using the Video Folder Widget?

This was happening on the video item and the video folder widget. I recently took the displays off of the presentations that were exhibiting the problems and I am now only using the new and improved video widget. This AM at a venue check, everything seemed to be OK

Starting on the March 4th, we began seeing intermittent video folder playback problems in one venue that is video folder heavy. On restart/reboot, the widget will grab the videos (most of them anyway) and start playback. After about an hour, the placeholder will go black. OS Reboot is the only thing that restores playback and then, only for a few hours.

The presentation and the folder contents are unchanged since January.
All displays appear to still be on 47.0.2526.80

Dave,

Could you provide a link to your presentation so I can take a look?
