Using Google Sheet Data in a Scroll

I want to be able to use text only data in a Google Sheet to populate a horizontal scroll/ticker. I've tried the Google Sheet widget but it only allows vertical scroll and searching did not turn up any useful or recent posts. Is scrolling text from a Google Sheet possible with a Chromebox powered display?

It use to be possible, but not now. The old 'gadget' would do this, but the new 'widget' does not. The gadget code is still functioning on an old presentation I created. You can see it in action via a comment I made 10 months ago here in a complaint about the same issue back then. If you find the old source code from Rise, you may be able to get if functional again. If I knew how, I would do it myself.

Hi Nathan, if you'd like to use our old Google Spreadsheet Gadget you are more than welcome to do so but please note that we no longer support it. You can find all the files here, https://github.com/Rise-Vision/gadgets/tree/master/GoogleSpreadsheet. You'll need to take that entire directory and host in on a server somewhere, or Rise Storage, then add that Gadget to your Company in Rise Vision from the "Gadgets" link in the top.

A better alternative would be to use our new Google Sheets Component which you can find here, https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/introducing-the-google-spreadsheet-component.... . Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks

Thank you. I would like to request this feature. Simply and easily updating a crawl would be huge. We have non-technical persons who will be updating sign content, which was why we have decided to use Rise Vision's platform, because dynamic content can be sourced to Google Docs without having to give those users access to the Rise Vision editor.

I understand your advice and am thankful, but I guess I'm a bit perplexed why a more complex method for getting horizontal scrolling to work is the recommended solution instead of just incorporating it into the simple to use Sheets widget with potential monetization.

Good question. We want to give you 100% control with how data is shown in a Presentation. As it stands today, the process to do this means you need to create a custom layout. To do that you'll need to have a basic understanding of how the Gadget works. That shouldn't be necessary when all you want to do is style the data in your Presentation.

To remove that complexity we are in the beginning stages of adopting Web Components. If you are interested, you can read more about Web Components here.  By transitioning to Web Components we can provide a set of tools that enables a web designer to take raw data and style it however they want using JavaScript and CSS! And because Web Components are non-proprietary, a web designer doesn't need to learn how to use a new app to create digital signage. They can keep using the tools they already use.

Unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot we can do to simplify how a User can stylize data in their Presentation with a Gadget. For this reason, we have placed our focus on building the Web Components that are listed in the link I included above. Then we are going to build Widgets that leverage those Web Components so that you can scroll horizontally, vertically and apply just about any type of transition you can think of. We are targeting to release beta versions in the next 4-6 weeks.

Until then, I'd be more than happy to help you get the Spreadsheet Gadget setup in your Company so that you can add horizontal scrolling to your Presentation. It may sound complex, but it really isn't.  Want to give it a try?

FYI - Here is the links to see an example of the system I had created.

In my use-case, I intend to have just only have one item in the placeholder (the spreadsheet widget) and I had been using this to display a 'ticker' type bar that we use for community announcements.  This gets updated via on a Google Form that we have shared with specific people and they get to automagically make things show up on our display between the dates they specify on the form.  (I discussed how to do this HERE 2 years ago - It is still working great! THIS is an example Form THIS is an example displayTHIS is the Spreadsheet & Formulas (I'm using the 'current' page, but you could also display any upcoming items or even past) The formula is in the A2 cell depending on the style you'd want to present.  I've now protected the sheets as they had gotten messed up with people tinkering

Hope this helps!

Alan - I'd like to try to set this up on my own environment.  Is there not more to it than downloading the folder from Git and uploading it to my webhost, and pointing to the url from Rise?

BTW - I think there are several areas where Alan meant to refer to the newer widget instead of the older gadget.  Remember, the older gadget already does what we want - the newer widget dropped the functionality for some reason...

Although, I suppose much of this holds true for gadgets too..

.

Alan - You said:

I am concerned with 'Web components' because I'm NOT a web designer and I never will be.  I came to Rise because I found that the GUI (Gadgets, Widgets or Gizmos) were easy enough for me to have decent presentations without mucking around in code.  I'm concerned that web components will eliminate (or drastically limit) that.

Do I have need to be concerned that I'm not a javascript or CSS ninja?  Will the GUI remain a viable option without needing to get a web designer on board?

Understood on your concern with having to know JavaScript and CSS. I wouldn't worry about it. On initial release we'll absolutely provide a standard layout just like we do now and include documentation on how they can be used.

And you are correct re: custom layouts and both are complex.

Any updates to the Google Sheets Widget scrolling horizontally like the Google Spreadsheet Gadget? I would like to begin converting out customers over to the New Editor, however until the horizontal scroll is working, I'm stuck in Classic Editor.

Hi there,

The Google Spreadsheet Widget still only scrolls horizontally at this time. We will be sure to update everyone if that functionality is added to the Widget. Thanks!
