Understanding Custom Layouts

I'm trying to design a menu board to make use of the Spreadsheets feature of this application but I can't for the life of me figure out the custom layout.xml file.

I've got my design ready to go and it's hosted on my VPS.  Some of the results show from the spreadsheet and I assume because I can't get it properly styled is why the rest won't show.

I have no problem understanding CSS and HTML, but for some reason this file won't read the CSS from my XML file.

The XML is located at http://darrenwalker.ca/DigitalSignage/WapitiRoadShell/layout/layout.xml

maybe someone can see something I'm missing.  In my layout I've created a left sidebar and the right would show my content from the spreadsheet.  I've made two divs called left and right and floated them left and right.  Still no luck.

Is it possible to manipulate the layout.xml file with the same standards of HTML and CSS?

Hi Darren,

Have you had a chance to look at the documentation here regarding the Spreadsheet Gadget?  It goes over custom layouts.

Thanks.

Been through it numerous times Neal, checked it this morning and everything is working.  My guess is it probably was a browser cache issue.

Thanks for the update Darren.

I've been burned by the browser cache before.

So I was previewing this within the Rise Vision console without having a player installed.  It was working but now when I download and install a player my spreadsheet data doesn't show up.  I do remember having this issue last time I tried using this software (https://code.google.com/p/risegadgets/issues/detail?id=1145)

Is there a way to fix this?  Would using a layout.xml file on Google Drive work or would creating a new spreadsheet help?

From what I see in the recorded issue, the problem wasn't replicable.  When you have the Display running with the spreadsheet, can you open the Developers tools (F12) and go to the console tab?  Can you let us know of any errors/messages that appear regarding the spreadsheet?  If you could provide screenshots, that would be best.

Thanks.

Neal,

Didn't see anything error related but here is the screenshot regardless.

The big white blank area is where the spreadsheet should be and shows up when I hit preview in the presentation tab.

Just in case, is the Spreadsheet shared?  If it is set to Private, then the Displays won't have permission to access it.

Thanks.

Frig...I feel like a fool.

Spreadsheet was shared, I had forgot to tick a display in the placeholder properties!  Rookie work on my part!

Thanks for all your help regardless

I've done that before myself.

Good to know you have it up and working now however.

Thanks.
