Spreadsheet scrolling

We have used a Google Spreadsheet, combined with the spreadsheet gadget to allow our school secretary to post names on our signs of kids that need to stop in the office.  It has worked wonderfully and saved constant p/a announcements through the day.  But yesterday afternoon something changed.  It used to be that a list showed up, and only scrolled when there was more than would fit in the placeholder.  Now it scrolls anytime there is more than one person on the list.  It looks awful when two names scroll off the top and then a few moments later start scrolling up from the bottom.  Is there any way to restore it to the previous function?

To be clear, we are using the spreadsheet gadget, from the old days ;-)  I tried using the Widget, but it did the same thing and having a minimum update time of 5 minutes really doesn't serve our purpose.

Thanks for any help!

Todd,

When you preview the presentation, does it react the same way?

What player are you using? Native or Chrome App?

Yes, previewing creates the same result.  We are using Chrome Boxes with the Chrome App in Kiosk mode.

Todd,

Can you try setting scroll to "No"?

Setting it to no scroll stopped the scrolling, but then if there are more names than fit in the placeholder, they never show up.  Turning the scrolling back on resumes the constant scrolling, even if there is only one name.

Todd,

I've just made a copy of your presentation and replaced the spreadsheet gadget with the widget. If I set it to the following (see screenshot) with one name in the FIRST cell (A1) of the spreadsheet, it does not scroll. It only begins scrolling when there are more than 10 names in the spreadsheet.

Ok, here is what I found.  It appears that the "row padding" all of sudden started to count for empty rows.  We actually use 40 rows on the spreadsheet, although seldom do we ever need that many.  But it appears that once I told it we have over 28 rows, the padding was enough to make start scrolling.

With this fix I have gone back to the gadget.

I tried the widget, but had two issues.  The major one was if the sign board started with enough names to scroll, it seemed to keep scrolling, even when the names dropped to zero (in our case that produces "- - -".  If there were a small number of names when the sign board started, it would not scroll when there were too many, unless you did a restart.  The second issue is having a minimum of 5 minute refresh on the spreadsheet.  We often put up names just before end of class bell, and our passing time is only 4 minutes, so there would be times that the board wouldn't be updated for a kid to see their name during that passing time.

So, I am not sure why padding suddenly started to count on empty rows (I suspect a Google changed something), but we are back working now that I have moved padding to zero.

Thanks for your help.

Todd,

Glad to hear you are back up and running. It's a shame that the widget won't work for your needs because of the timeframes available.

I would chalk this up to a change with google sheets as well, the spreadsheet gadget hasn't had any changes made in quite some time.
