spreadsheet alternate row color

Using the spreadsheet alternate row color I cannot create alternating background row colors.
All are using the same color
I'm I misunderstanding how this widget works

The Google Spreadsheet widget only gets the textual content from Google.  Any formatting or style changes in the spreadsheet do not get transferred over.  You can, however, get the desired effect through a custom layout that the widget references.

Why are you referring people to to a custom layout when the google widget LITERALLY shows an option to make alternate row colors??? If that does not work then why is it even offered in the widget? Why in the world would I want to go and spend another 30 minutes formatting an html page when your widget should do as it shows? Either remove the alternating color feature or get it to work properly. I cannot believe you feel this is an appropriate answer to this question.
