Hi all,

I'm new to Digital Signage and wanting to start a business on this really soon.

Amongst other questions, I have the following?

What is your opinion on having sound playing on videos and such on the displays displaying content? I guess the location of the displays pays a large consideration?

What are your experiences?

Thanks,
Regards,

Greg, The use of sound really depends on the display's environment and dwell time. If you have a short playlist and the :30 sec video cycles though 20 times every hour, then the employee working next to the sign will either find a way to disable the sound or throw a brick through the screen.

Brief sounds that make people glance at the sign work well in a noisy trade show atmosphere.

98% of the creative we do now has no sound track. We learned though many end user complaints.

Usually a management person makes the decision to have sound. They review the play list once, approve it and leave. It is the poor employee that ends up having to endure hours of repetitive jingles. Use sound sparingly. Hope this helps.

Sounds is only helpful if it serves a specific purpose. For instance, we have a touch interactive donor recognition screen in the lobby of one of our spaces which is directly adjacent to a box office. It allows patrons to play videos about the various key donors to the project. When the screen is on the home screen there's no sound.

We use this to contain the sound: http://soundtube.mseaudio.com/products/fp/#FP6020-II

On touchscreens sound is useful. It gives audio feedback on selecting/clicking something. It is especially useful when the content, such as video or image gallery, needs some pre-loading. This way user knows that system is responding to his actions. It is also useful at the content change as a trigger for attention response. Just do not make it to frequent and annoying.
