We had an RSS widget, under the Student Life placeholder, that drew from:
https://austincc.collegiatelink.net/EventRss/EventsRss

This Student Life RSS events list has been working for a few weeks, then right before Christmas, it became blank. I had assumed that was because there no student events scheduled over the holidays.

But I checked the above RSS feed today in a browser (FF), and there was actually lots of information in the feed. The RSS widget has just stopped reading it, somehow, by itself.

I used the W3C Feed Validation Service to verify the RSS address, and it came back verified.

Can you explain why this Student Life RSS widget stopped displaying information?

Thanks,
Robert

Robert,

It looks like all of our typical RSS feeds are still functioning in the gadget here locally. You may want to see if anything in your specific RSS has changed.

It's the same address. Other than that, I didn't create the feed, so wouldn't know how or if it has changed or not. How could I tell?

Robert,

You would need to check in with your web designer or the person that administers your RSS feed.

There's no web designer or administrator for this. The Student Life student group that 'owns' this feed said some past students just 'set it up' a while ago, and said they don't think anything has been changed.

All I know is that according to the W3C validator, it is a valid feed,  and I was able to easily view this RSS feed using Firefox. So I have no idea why the RSS widget shouldn't work.

If you guys can't help out, I guess I'll have to drop that particular feed and look for another RSS feed to put in that placeholder.

Thanks anyway,
Robert

Robert,

A quick review shows two errors coming from your RSS feed. I can't tell you for sure that these are causing the display issue, but it would be a good place to start.

I finally got someone to look through the RSS feed, and they apparently made some changes, as the RSS feed can now be seen.
There's still an issue somewhere though. When the RSS feed is bring read by the widget the first time (after publishing),  the 'events' display correctly, in order. But when it starts the second run-through of the same events in the feed, it alternates between the last event of the feed and  a combination of two events displayed at once, resulting in overlapping text and graphics.

The feed:
https://austincc.collegiatelink.net/EventRss/EventsRss

The presentation:

Is this an RSS widget issue? Or an RSS feed issue?

Thanks,
Robert

rcruse,

It looks like this may be a combination of the data in the feed, and the size of the placeholder for the rss feed. If I take that feed and put it into a larger placeholder, it appears just fine. You may consider changing the gadget layout, reducing font size, or even reducing the content displayed to better fit the placeholder.
