Question about scheduling and problem with Image Folder Widget

Hello,

I've got 14 screens set up with a Chromebox behind them with the Rise Vision app. I've run into some problems running them. First question:

We're an event location and have several events going on at the same day. For example I have schedule A that needs to run on 10 displays from 8 AM until 6 PM. Then from 6 PM until 2 AM I want to play schedule B. However when I try to schedule B it states an error that Schedule A is already being scheduled for those displays.

I've made sure the dates and hours are ok but it's still the same error. I even changed the timeline of the presentations. Am I overlooking something?

The second problem I keep having is that when I make a presentation with the Image Folder Widget, my displays don't play the presentation correctly. Some of them load the images, some of them keep stating: Please wait, images are being downloaded. That stays like this for hours. If I add the images one per one with the old editor it does play everything correctly. Internet connection is fine and more then good enough to load the images so I'm wondering what's wrong.

Thanks for any advise or help!

Hi Tim,

Regarding your first problem, you can only have one schedule assigned to each display, that's why you're getting the error. So you would have to create one long schedule rather than 2 smaller schedules. Let me know if that makes sense?

You also may want to take a look at this thread:  https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/question-about-scheduling-and-problem-with-i...

For the second problem I'd like to take a look at the presentation having the problem, could you please tell me your company and presentation name.

Thanks,
Shea

Hi Shea,

Thanks for the answers.

So If I want to make it happen I just need to make a playlist with content A playing for a few thousand seconds and after that content B for another few thousand seconds? I get it, but imo very weird way to "schedule" content.

Our company name is Kursaal Oostende and the presentation is called Event Loop.

Hi Tim,

No it's a little simpler than that. You can have Content A have a duration of lets say 10, but set it's Timeline to be from 8:00AM to 6:00PM and then you can have Content B have a duration of 10 and set it's Timeline to be from 6:00PM to 2:00AM.

That means Content A will always play from 8:00AM to 6:00PM and then stop and Content B will play from 6:00PM to 2:00AM.

Regarding the displays, are they connected via wifi or are they wired in? I can't see anything strange in the set up.

Thanks,
Shea

Aha, that does make more sense! ;-) Thanks!

They are all wired connected. I've tested the DL and UL speed and it's more than ok. The strange thing is that it doesn't load the images on some displays when I use the widget but they all do when I manually add the images in a list.

No problem!

Hmm that is strange, is it the same displays that always have the issue or does it change day to day? Also could you please tell me what media players you are using?

Thanks,
Shea

Yes, it's the same displays that don't load it correctly.

We use Asus Chromebox M119U

Hey Shea
On some of the android boxes and other boxes including my windows IOT stuff. I have had the same experience with the image folder widget not loading correctly. There will be days that it works fine and others it keeps the message with please wait on it. I did some internal test and i have noticed that the widget caches and sends the info back but to the widget doesn't change the screen in some instances. I have no issue with the image widget but the image folder widget seems to not be working consistently for me. Everything i use should work since its chromium v43 and above.

William and Tim, we are looking into a scenario where a high number of request for files in parallel will cause issues like what you describe. Tim mentions above that no issues occur when adding images one-by-one which supports a possible issue when many files are requested concurrently.

I appreciate the feedback. Curious though, is there anything different from when you see issues compared to when the Widget runs as expected? Where new images added, a different folder selected, etc?

Mine are intermediate here and there when this happens. When it works it works but when it doesn't i have to resort to the image widget. I will say though that you are or it seems that the widget sends every file at once to cache and not one by one. This means there are multiple connections with multiple downloading which can cause failure once you get a high volume. My thought is why not send one request with an url array of every file that needs to be cached. That way you only doing one request and each file is downloaded in the array one by one. Then send the info back to the widget with an array with the location of all the files. Then during your checks compare the array with the one thats currently running. I know this might be a lot of work but it makes more sense to do it that way than just make multiple server request all at one time.

Thanks William. We should have a fix ready for testing soon.
