Question about Electron

From last week's summary:

  • The next release of Rise Player that leverages Electron’s built in Chromium for rendering content has shipped and is being deployed on a staggered basis now. So far no issues showing up in our logs or reports of problems. This is exciting stuff and a major milestone for us.
Can you tell us more about the rendering engine used with Electron?  Is Electron like a wrapper for Chromium or is there a new rendering engine?

I am using Chrome 50 for developing and testing presentations on my PC, and I am interested to know whether my html5 and video content will render the same on the Rise Vision player as it does on my PC.

Hi Steve,

Electron does use the same rendering engine as Chromium, the Blink engine. There should not be any difference between how Electron and Chrome render HTML.

However, Chrome is the official build of Chromium by Google, so it includes some proprietary code not present in the open source version. Specifically, it arrives with Flash installed. If any of your presentations make use of Flash, take a look at this post https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/how-to-enable-flash-in-the-rise-vision-playe...

I hope that helps

Hi Ahmed, regarding the new Rise player is by any chance we can have a arm64 build for that or even the ripo of the project so i can test it on my arm64 boards ?

Hi Nidal,

As Robb mentioned, you can find links to the repos on the create-a-display page. The one that you want to look at is https://github.com/Rise-Vision/rise-launcher-electron

As for ARM64 builds, they're theoretically possible since Electron supports the platform, but they are not yet supported by electron-packager. So it might take some wrangling to get that working.

Good luck!

Hi Ahmed,

Thanks, that is helpful.  I don't use Flash but I will keep that in mind.
