Problems with (smooth) scrolling content from Rise Vision Google Spreads Gadget.

Hi there,
I have problems with scrolling simple text in the Rise Vision Google Spreads Gadget (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MQV35DwdCccMSeZfBy0m4fZ49OJDMsCCVkz56tHOJ9o/gviz/tq?gid=0&am....
First problem is that neither the up nor the left directions allow smooth test scrolling in two same Gadget modules on the same page. The content moves very bumpy, for 1 second nice as it should be and then it get stuck and run and stuck and run. I have a scrolling text footer running and it makes one very nervious when trying to read the content that I pick up from my GoogleDrive Spreadsheets. Cannot be shown to the public (Tapas Bar Restaurant) like that.

Today, out of the sudden (I didn't work on the Gadget) the second Gadgets (scrolling up the menu) failed totally and doesn't move at all anymore (worked for a few days but also a little freaky).

I am not online with the presentation but can see it in the preview in Google Chrome Browser running in Windows7 on a HP Pavilon dv7 Laptop. I emptied the cache, logged-out and back in, resetted my router and don't know how to get rid of the problem of the feature that I like a lot as I like the whole Rise Vision cloud.

The was a similar problem posted about 4 years ago as I found out and some autoscrolling feature was mention to come up. Is anyone out there who can advise what to try and to do?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Frank

Frank, if I understand correctly, you are only running this in Preview, not in the Rise Player installed on a device?

Alex,
Yes, you are correct. Does it make a big difference and may it work correctly when being live with the Player? If this is not a common problem known already and I am the only one having this headache, then I will download and install the player on a second LT and test-run it on my private smart TV because it was said that the player should not be on the same LT that administrates the presentations, correct?.
I just didn't want to mess with the player and stuff because I was busy geting my first presentation done. The crolling problem is the last issue I have. Anything else is as perfect as it can be so far.

Because I am spending a lot of time in this (for more screens in the near future), I just wanna make sure that the basic features satisfiying my desires work perfectly and a "newsticker feature" as I am talking about is a must and not an option.

Thanks for your prompt follow-up Alex. I am waiting for your advise,
Frank

Update: Since 4:30pm GMT+1 the menu started scrolling again without me doing anything in the Gadget. So prob #1 has beenn solved. It's now about the smooth motion of the text content in both Rise Vision Speads Gadgets, especially the one that I use as the newsticker footer.
Thank's in case you fixed a technical bug that made the one Gadget stop scrolling.

Hi Frank,
I would never recommend doing performance testing in Preview, it's not going to be the same as playing it with the Rise player on the actual hardware you are planning to use.  Once you have the actual hardware ready and installed with Rise Chrome Packaged app, I would test then.  If you still have scrolling issues it could also be taxing the machine resources from playing multiple items.
Also, I just want to clarify - you are using the Google Spreadsheet *widget*, not the *gadget*, correct?

Hi Alex,
thanks for your reply. As I mentioned in my last update, the one Gadget (it is the Gadget and not the Widget) started moving, out of the sudden, 1 hr ago without that I did anything.

I will follow your advise and start playing with the live situation and the RV Player tonight. I mean I have several tasks running in my presentation (thats what DS is about) but no crazy things and all other tasks run very good. I will let you know how the live presentation looks like.

How ever, I run the Spreadsheet GADGET https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lvSq5GhqSwgiCxZOWwcWLnxHJbRkznJ6HuwDmZIROWg/gviz/tq?gid=0&am... from a template that is today for what reason ever not listed in the Templates anymore (there are only a few teplates listed when I browse them compared to last week). It was the restaurant template of some fiction Grill with palms in the upper lefthand logo.

Here is a screen shot of my placeholder that says Gadget.

Best regards,
Frank

Hi Frank, the Google Spreadsheet gadget is deprecated.  Can you try the same thing with the Google Spreadsheet widget instead?  Scrolling can be affected by other things going on in the presentation, for instance if you have a placeholder switching between images, watch to see if the scrolling becomes jerky at the same time.  For instance, I have a video playing in one placeholder and the horizontal scrolling message mostly runs smoothly, but it hesitates for a moment when the video is finished and starts to loop again.

Hi Alex,
I know exactly what you mean and it makes sense to me. I am running two image slightshows and two more spreadsheet (same Gadget) "slights"(no scrolls) simultaneously besides the newsticker. The transition frequencies of all are pretty moderate in a range between 10 - 30 seconds. They all run very smooth. I watched the show carefully and have to say that the jerky action is very choppy (about second by second) with speed ups in between and visiably not really related to transitions in other placeholders as it is the case in your screen in that the loop change causes your scrolling text hesitations.
I will take your advise and will do a few test runs with the most recent Spreadsheet  Widget now. I will advise you about my test results.

Hi Alex,
I did a few testings last night and was also reviewing some postings from community members having the same or similar issues. So the following refers still to Chrome browser previews and no Live Player results.

Firstly, I now know why I didn't use the new Widget but the old Gadget. It is about the new Widget doesn't allow up-, down-, left- and right text scrolling. So the Widget doesn't fulfill my needs and desires.

Secondly, there are two simple Text Widgets in the RV store whereas only one allows scrolling. I tested the one that allows scrolling in addition (simultaneously) to the text scrolling newsticker in my presentation's footer (see the marked red numbers 10 and 11 in the attached screenshot. No. 10 is the Text Gadget scroller and 11 is the Spreadsheet Gadget scroller).
So both pick up ther content from different sources, #10 is straight forward pasted text and #11's source is the spreadsheet.
It is funny, both contents show simultaneously the EXACTLY same jerky behavior even they are independent Gadgets/Widgets and pick up their contents from two independent sources.
Interesting is that the jerky behavior seems to depend on times. Last night at 4:30pm GMT+1 the text in both modules run close to perfect smooth. Same this morning at 11:50am, the time I am writing this post.

Thirdly, I previewed the very beautiful RV Wether Template http://bit.ly/1jOCIGx  that also has a text scrolling footer being a CNN RSS feed. The text in the said template footer runs exactly as smooth and nice as I wish either the spreadsheet and/or text modules could scroll text.

For your information I attach a screen-shot to this post that numbers explain the Gadgets/Widgets used in my presentation and their transition settings.
#1 No transition at all
#2. Image slight show switching the food images every 10 seconds
#3. Image slight show switching event images and a weather widget every 20 seconds
#4, 5, and 6 No transitions at all
#7. Slight-in from the left from the old RV Spreadsheet Gadget. Perfect  every 10 seconds.
#8. Scroll-up from the old RV Spreadsheet Gadget (runs a little jerky at any time)
#9. Transition change that runs perfectly every 10 seconds.
#10. RV Text Widget (for testing only), Scrolls exactly and simultaneously jerky as #11 does.
#11. RV old RV Spreadsheet Gadget  that behaves as #10.

Any comments and avises from you so far?

Frank
P.S. Where are all the RV templates gone that were available last week?

Hi Frank, I re-read your message a couple of times to be sure, but if you are using Preview, and also using the deprecated Google Spreadsheet gadget, I can't make any good suggestions.  I am truly sorry if the Google Spreadsheet widget does not have the features you want but we are no longer supporting the gadget version and won't be doing any further development work on it.

Based on the above, I think it is best to review how the performance is on a pretty decent (hardware-wise) machine using the Rise Chrome Packaged App player, using supported widgets or items, and then go from there in your findings.

Regarding your question about template, I just checked with our designers and we are removing out-of-date templates.

Hi Frank,
I started seeing our old Spreadsheet's doing the same thing. I believe it's a mix between the old Google Spreadsheets and the new Google Sheets, along with the Rise Vision Gadget. Unfortunately, Google is pushing all Spreadsheets to their new Sheets platform, so I've found issue's between the new Sheets app and the old Rise gadget....I have found solace using the latest Rise Chrome App player, Rise Google Spreadsheet Widget, and latest Google Sheets. Google Sheet's has it's issues still, importData's don't occur as often as they should, or get caught by Google Cache...but overall it works and more importantly scrolls smoothly.
I do wish Rise would re-implement some of the Spreadsheets older Gadget functionality, namely the sideways scroll and circular Spreadsheet scroll, instead of the fade effect.

You're better off making the jump now while Google is still transitioning over to the new Google Sheets App.
Good Luck with your conversion!

Hi Alex,

Now, since I have the presentation via a brand new HP Laptop, Chrome Browser, and the RV Chrome Windows App Player on the Display I can tell that the horizontal and the vertical text scrolling from the new Google Spreadsheet (but using the old RV Google Spreadsheets Gadget because the new Widget doesn't support scrolling at all) ist still jerky as it was and is in the Preview.

I have one vertical scrolling Spreadsheet for a menu running and a second horizontal as my personal newsticker that content is easy, fast and convenient to update from different rows in the spreadsheet.

I agree with you when you say that the nice features from the old Gadget could be re-implemented into the new RV Spreadsheets Widget because such a great product as the RV cloud is should at least provide the smooth running text scrolling tool as every cheap LED matrix provides this feature.

I don't know how to do it but I know I can start a voting (+1) for a feature that I think is imperative to be a part of the standard features that would be more convenient to use as an individual RSS feed.

Do you want me to start a new Post that's asking to vote for the implementation of a smooth text scrolling Gadget or the re-implementation of the old RV Spreadshett features in the new Widget, or how do you want me to do that?
