Display Control, a setup guide.

Display Control is a feature that is built into the Rise Vision Player Chrome Application. When configured it will turn an LCD Display on or off according to a Schedule the Display is assigned to. For example, if you define your Schedule to play from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Display Control will turn your LCD Display on at 8:00 am, and off at 5:00 PM.

Display Control sends on and off commands using a serial port. In order to utilize this feature, a serial connection needs to be made between the Media Player and LCD Display.

How to configure Display Control commands
  1. From the Presentations page, add a new Presentation from template. Select the Display Control template.

  2. Assign the Presentation to the Schedule assigned to your Display running the Rise Vision Player.

  3. When the Presentation loads, a configuration page will appear that looks like this:

Using a mouse and keyboard, configure the following:

  • Serial Port: select the appropriate port based on your setup
  • On Command: the hexadecimal command used to turn the Display on, you will need to obtain this command from your Display manufacturer
  • Off Command: the hexadecimal command used to turn the Display off, you will need to obtain this command from your Display manufacturer
  • Change the Status to On, and press Apply.
Test turning your Display on and off. To test that Commands are working correctly, you will need to remote into the Media Player using a remote desktop connection. Click the Display Off button, and your Display should turn off. Click the Display On button and the Display should turn on. If the Display does not respond, verify that your commands are entered correctly and that you have a serial connection between the Display and Media Player.

When setting the start or finish time for the Schedule, it must be at least 10 minutes from the current time on the Display. Schedules must be longer than 15 minutes for Display Control to work correctly.

When creating a  Schedule, it must be saved at least 15 minutes before the time set for when the Presentation starts or ends.  For example, if you intend for your Display to turn on at 8:00 AM, your Schedule needs to be configured, and saved, by 7:45 AM.

Be sure to share your Hexadecimal commands in this thread!

Does it works also with a ChromeBox? There is no serial port on a Chrome box. Could it be done through a USB - serial convertor ?

Thierry,

Yes, with a converter this should function.

Yes this does work with a USB to Serial cable. The hardest part is finding the hex code to turn off and back on. It works really well.

Have you updated this? Went to "Add From Template" and could not find the Display Control template. Would love to use this feature and have all the hardware. Please advice. Thank you!

Luis,

If you are running that Presentation on any Display that is not running the Chrome App Player, the URL in the Web Page Widget of that Presentation will not work. Is that the issue you're seeing?

Hey Blake,

I am trying to test out this feature. I have a Dell Chromebox running Rise Player on a Philips BDL4220QL monitor. I have acquired the HEX codes from Philips (as well as the SICP manual). I've got the presentation up and I see this screen. It sees the serial connector in the drop down. I'm not sure how to test functionality? I assumed I could at least click and get the display to Turn Off.. No way to remote into the Chromebox that I am aware of?

Once this is set up, how would I go about sending the commands to the monitor inside of a presentation?

Thanks :)

Disregard.. I got it tested okay. I can turn on/off the display with these HEX codes. May work for other Philips monitors, but in particular mine is a BDL4220QL.

ON - 050118021E
OFF - 050118011D

Now.. that's awesome! What can I do with it? Where do I put On/Off times?

Hi, I'm having some trouble setting this up as well, I have the hex codes working and controlling our LCD. Could you give a more detailed tutorial on how to schedule the actual tool? Do I put the presentation in for 15 min at the beginning of the day and again at the end (two scheduled presentations total in addition to the actual presentation)? Appreciate your help, thank you!

Hi Steps,

The presentation is used for configuration once only. After setting up the hex codes within the presentation, you can remove it from your presentation.

Thanks Blake :) I see that it is saving the HEX codes and on/off state in a config file. I'm still not 100% on how to actually use it? Is it completely based on a schedule? So I just set my schedule up to run from, say 8a - 5p, and the display will come on and go off at those times. From above, this assumes I had that schedule setup and saved at least 15 minutes beforehand, and the schedule itself should run for at least 15 minutes. Correct? I tried it out yesterday, but my display never came on. Will give it another go today..

Wendi,

That's correct. Once Display Control is configured with the correct HEX codes, your display should turn off/on along with your schedule.

Have you confirmed that you're using the correct HEX code to turn on the display? Did you test using the display on button?

Aha - perhaps I didn't give the schedule long enough when I tested it before. I set it up this afternoon to run from 11:45a - 1:00p. It worked perfectly, display came on at 11:45 and was off when I got back from lunch. :) Thanks!

Any experience so far with someone using Chromeboxes to control TV scree, hibernate mode?
I've seen various posts on that subject like :
The newest version of the Rise Vision Chrome App Player has been released!
What Cost effective Screens/TV/Display Best for Chrome hex code On/Off...

IN this current thread, three months ago, Blake told that it should woork using a USB-Serial converter (like the one proposed by Robb : Sabrent SBT-USC6K. ). but don't know it is was validated on Chrome OS by someone.

Thanks.

Hi Thierry,

I used a TRENDnet TU-S9 USB-to-Serial converter on a Dell 3010 Chromebox with no problems at all.

I tried to find the HEX codes for my Haier Tv with no success, so instead I bought this IR Remote control thats works very good: http://www.amazon.com/Broadlink-Learning-Universal-Integrates-Controls/dp/B00U5IXFGI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=U...   the problem, and I think is the same if I got the HEX Codes, is that you will not be sure at all that the TV is on or off, may be you sent a signal but what if someone over there pushed also the on/off button, so the same brand handles this product: http://www.amazon.com/Broadlink-SP2-Electronics-Automation-Smartphones/dp/B00U5KX7IW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=U...  that will let you turn on or off electricity, but also a chart of energy consumption which in fact that means your TV is On or Off, haven`t ordered yet, and it is not expensive.

I need also to find a standard way to switch on/off monitors since we plan to install around 200 signage stations for internal communition in our company workdwide over 2016 & 2017.

I prefer the option to set the TV screen in hibernate mode instead of a full power switch On/Off. Indeed, pwoering on/off has a much higher bad impact for the time life of the power supply unit that has a MTBF (mean time between failure) related to the number of on/off cycle.

I like the unit http://www.amazon.com/Broadlink-Learning-Universal-Integrates-Controls/dp/B00U5IXFGI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=U... since it appears it is possible to program a schedule.

Thanks a lot for the tip.

Hi Luis,
The products that you've mentioned all looks interesting.  Not sure if prompted via another comment here or elsewhere but I found myself looking into ways to remotely power off devices. When I was dabbling with IoT (DIY, using Xbee hardware) one of the cloud service providers that I trialled was Etherios.  Rcently they were sold off to West Monroe Partners which means that Digi no longer owns the domains http://etherios.com  or http://etherios.co.uk - this prompted users to reconfigure applications that are on those domain.  Something to think about for IoT down the track especially DIY.

Is there a current version of the "Display Control " presentation?  If not, what are people doing to send serial commands to displays to turn them on & off at pre-determined times of the day?  (Environment is Intel ComputeSticks and I plan on using USB to serial adapters if possible.)

Hi Stetson,

The Rise Vision Player is not capable of communicating on serial commands, only the Chrome App Player was capable of this. If you are running the Chrome App Player (which is no longer supported, more on that here.) you can find that Presentation by following these steps: https://goo.gl/kGTk5H. Please bear in mind that the Chrome App Player is not supported by Rise Vision.

I hope that helps!
