Hello community,

I just received this email from Google:

Hello from Google,

We announced last year that we’re deprecating web hosting in Google Drive for users and developers. Our records show that you might have used this feature to publish a webpage or serve other web assets.

On Aug 31, 2016, we will discontinue serving content via googledrive.com/host/[id] and the webpages will not be accessible anymore.

As an alternative to web hosting in Drive, we recommend:

  • Blogger—An easy and free way to host websites.
  • Firebase Hosting— An alternative if you’re using the web-hosting feature to serve static webpages with items on Drive.

If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact Google Support.

Sincerely,
The Google Apps Team
On my presentations in Risevision i have literally hundreds of links to images hosted on Google Drive.
This is no more then a HTTP link like this: http://drive.google.com/uc?id=uniqueIDtotheImage
With other words, i am accessing this image through the webserver/hosting functionality of Google Drive.

Will this mean my images are not accessible anymore after August 31? Or does this announcement mean we cannot access .html etc files anymore.

Best Regards,

Roland,

You would need to confirm with Google Drive on these questions, but I believe you will need to find new hosting for all of your media and web page files that are displayed in Rise Vision.

We do not recommend the use of Google Drive for hosting. Rise Storage is a great option at only $10 a month, and provides full integration with Rise Vision. You can take advantage of unlimited storage on Rise Storage as well :)

Hi Blake,

Thanks for your reply. It seems though that this functionality is still working at this moment.
I understand you comment about the Rise Storage option, i'll take this in consideration.

Regards, Roland

Web hosting and photo storage on a Google Drive are two different things.  I believe the discontinued service simply means that Google Drive will no longer drive html content like a website.  You can still access your photos from Google Drive though.  This is what I have found:

Use this format in the file location in RV:
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID

Where FILE_ID is the share ID of the photo.  You will have to check the Remove Validation underneath for it to let you save the changes, but it does work.

You can find the FILE_ID by right-clicking the photo in Google Drive and clicking on Get Shareable Link.  The link will look something like "https://drive.google.com/open?id=FILE_ID".  Copy the file ID and paste it in the previous URL and you are golden.

You can also access videos from your Google Drive.  It works pretty much the same way with the URLs mentioned above, but you will not be able to use the RV Video Widget.  Instead, you will need to use an HTML widget.  The HTML will look something like this:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head lang="en">
    <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
    <meta charset="UTF-8">
    <title></title>
</head>
<body>

<video width="100%" autoplay onloadstart="this.volume=0.5">

<source src="https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID"; type="video/mp4">

Your browser does not support the video tag.

</video>
</body>
</html>
