Introducing Rise Player Professional!

We have heard loud and clear from our users that they want a more robust and enhanced Rise Player to control their digital signage content. After much consideration, research, and development we are very pleased to announce the first release of our professional digital signage player, aptly named, Rise Player Professional.

This first release is significant. Our existing Rise Player is a web-based application that relies on an internet connection to start and to show content reliably. The new Rise Player Professional is a self-contained application that is completely capable of starting and running consistently without an internet connection. As long as your content has been loaded at least once and assuming the content doesn’t rely on real time data feeds for things like weather or financial market updates, your content will always be shown.

We are considering adding next to Rise Player Professional:

  • Notifications if a Display has failed
  • Power management to reduce electricity consumption
  • User access for remote troubleshooting and repair
  • Update Rise Player to use your branding
And this is where you come in. If you are interested in Rise Player Professional and the continuous improvement of the features that it provides please let us know what you think we should add next in this two minute survey.

If you don’t need these features we will continue to provide our free Rise Player. And if you are not sure if you need Rise Player Professional and would like to try it out, no problem, every Display within your Company can use Rise Player Professional free for 30 days. Simply select Start Trial from any one of your Displays and see what you think.

If you would like to upgrade to Rise Player Professional just select the option from your Display Settings and subscribe on per Display basis for $9 per month, or if you are managing a large network you might consider our Enterprise plan. For one Enterprise subscription all companies within your network are subscribed to Storage, Embedded Presentations, Priority Support and Rise Player Professional.

Hi Adam, no separate download for Rise Player Professional. You can upgrade one or more of your Displays from https://displays.risevision.com.  Take a look at this article for more information. https://help.risevision.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003830563-Getting-started-with-Rise-Player-Professi...

Thanks!

This is great news and we most likely want that, but here is a problem. I decided to upgrade one of the 'sub-company' players for 30 day trial for testing, but we were charged monthly fee anyway?

Darius,

Since you weren't able to take advantage of the free trial, I'd like to offer you a refund on your first month of Rise Player Professional. Shoot an email over to support@risevision.com, subject "Refund on Rise Player Professional Attention: Blake". Provide the Company ID that you made the purchase on, and I'll process the refund.

Thanks!

Thanks Darius! Got it all sorted out for you. The email I just sent includes a video explaining why you had a subscription, but your Display wasn't upgrading, it's also confirmation of your refund.

I'm sure you've already seen it, but we have an article that covers supported content for Offline Play, https://help.risevision.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003830563-Getting-started-with-Rise-Player-Professi...

It has a section on optimizing web pages for Offline Play.

So, that is what I thought... If you do not see those options to upgrade RV Player to Pro version, then you need to clear you browsers cache. Too late for me, though.

Now, I am curious how do I downgrade back to Standard version?

Darius,

Access the subscription to Rise Player Professional in your Store account, like I did in the video that I supplied you. Uncheck the Displays that you no longer want to use Rise Player Professional.

Day 1 testing. Noticed 1 issue and have 1 question.

Issue: The app does not cache images applied in presentation's and placeholder's background-image settings. That particular setting, which I like, seems to be greatly ignored by RV in favor of the Image Widget.

Question: have you tested the scenario, when occasionally the sheets widget spits out an error message because it cannot access the file? I am wondering what would happen when connected player cannot access the sheet file... is it gonna display error message or play cache content?

Thanks for the feedback Darius.

Can you remind me why you don't like using Image Widget to define your bg image?

As for the Sheets Widget. Do you see this error message when Offline or Online?

Thanks!

Alan, not that I do not like Image Widget, but if I can add less Placeholders in presentations I do that. Makes presentations lighter, better organized (considering there is no tools or options availabe to organize multiple placeholders). As an added bonus... images load up faster that way.

I get sheets error messages with players being online and wired. This happens in presentations with multiple instances of the sheets widget. Sometimes one or two out of ~20 would display error that would go away next time the widget updates or I force-reload the presentation. Occasionally mostly all of them would do that at once.

I am happy, but not without sarcastic skepticism.  I see now Rise could see what made a great player and at least have some understanding why the most useful parts (embedded playlists, 100% cached content...just like the very reliable 1st version) all went away and the player more resembled a toy.  ...selling points were being gathered for the professional version to be released some day.  Just like any new release by Microsoft (or Rise).  It may not be the most prudent move to jump right in to the new offering.  ...could leave you with more questions than answers and more work than you have time for as you put out customer fires.  Having said that...in the end Microsoft is no 2nd rate company and either is Rise.  I've tried other products...which is why amid the complaints, I'm still here.  The "better" options cost a fortune and the other inexpensive options are junk.  I'll be interested to see how this goes.  To go from $0 to $9 a player to just get back things we've had in the past seems a little hard to swallow.  Does the professional player come with any of the things we were previously paying for?  ...maybe I've missed something there.  Also...when you talk about being able to access it from the back end are you talking about going right into windows (or other OS) beyond the player?  ...like using Logmein.  If you can replace Logmein as an integrated component, I'd gladly pay $9/machine.

So, I almost like it... all the simple presentations after some re-design work as advertised. However, I cannot make Web Page Widget to play offline. The provided instructions are very vague and even after I eventually managed to cover all the steps listed in the instructions, the webpage did not play offline. OK, it can be me... I get it, but even provided webpage example did not work. I spent perhaps a couple of hours at the most with that and will get back at it tomorrow, but even the provided web demo do not have all it needs according to the instructions.

If there is anybody who get their Web Page Widget playing offline... I want to talk to you )))

Update: Ok I've got this working. One very important step was missing - I needed to re-install the app. I removed the old one and installed fresh copy from you. It is working now.

OK, what do I need to get all the files that make this demo webpage click? ))) I must reverse-engineer it. Pretty please.

Hi, I have been trying to make it work for a couple last hours. I am using the demo you provided. So the demo folder is missing /bower_components. I installed it myself, but when I look at the source file, it has this: "bower_components/webcomponentsjs/webcomponents-lite.min.js," however, there is no such file in bower_components.

Hi Darius,

Which demo are you referring to? The demo (and all assets) I provided you here https://storage.googleapis.com/risemedialibrary-30007b45-3df0-4c7b-9f7f-7d8ce6443013/stu/test/platin... or do you mean the step by step demo here https://github.com/Rise-Vision/platinum-sw-demo ?

If you're following the step by step, be sure to follow the step where you must do a bower install. It will install the bower dependencies needed.

If you're referring to the storage demo I provided you, the necessary assets (bower_components) are definitely there.

Hope this helps.

OK, that was it, this one little stupid file missing. Now I have it working, but I have a question

Here: https://github.com/Rise-Vision/platinum-sw-demo is missing /bower_components folder. Your demo is not going to work properly without it.

I installed it myself, although I really cannot understand why it could not have been added by you.

Even after I installed it, for some reason unknown to me, it was missing that "webcomponents-lite.min.js" file. Basically I found it online to download and put it into the folder where it was supposed to be. And now it works. I do not understand most of the things I just did, but it works.

May I ask to make this demo more common RV user friendly because sure as hell it is not now )

And also thank you for your work guys. No matter how challenging you make it sometimes... it makes me learn things today I did not know yesterday )))

hey, Stuart

Yes I followed your instructions and got bower_components installed. Look, I do not understand these matters... I just followed instructions and installed that and there were no error messages or anything. What I did, I simply copied bower_components from where it was installed into your demo folder. And that was it (aside the missing file...that did not install for some reason). So I am thinking why you could not just included bower_components folder in your demo, but maybe I just do not understand something. Anyway, everything is working fine here and I am happy. Thank you Stuart.

Hi,

So you downgraded the player we all had 2 days ago and want 9 dollar/player for now on?
I come from a company that pays Rise Vision for storage etc but this might be a dealbreaker for us.

Göteborgs Operan,

No, we didn't downgrade the player that was released to the public. Rise Player is still Rise Player, with all of the features that have ever been advertised. Rise Player Professional adds some great new features that you can choose to take advantage of.

Thanks,
Blake

Hi,

So my "Standard" player will work exactly the same that it did before?
If my internet somehow shuts down the player will still play the content that is uploaded like before?

The more I think about this, the more I want to say it... This offline playback should not be available only in Pro version. This must be added to Standard version too, because this is what any digital signage player must have - that is the core function.

The rest of it isn't necessary for basic signage and fit well within premium options IMO:
  • Notifications if a Display has failed
  • Power management to reduce electricity consumption
  • User access for remote troubleshooting and repair
  • Update Rise Player to use your branding

Thanks for the feedback Darius. For now, we can only provide Offline Play with Rise Player Professional, but we will keep your points in mind for future updates.

Actually Blake, offline play isn't "totally" new.  Robb and others who have been there that long would know that the first Rise Player played all files locally from the machine.  It was a bulletproof system that I've been begging for that reliability of playing files locally off the machine for some time.  ...but when the platform became more robust and complex the local playing of files went away.  I was never sure why.  I was just always told it could not be done with the new player.

To throw my hat into the ring...I've been sitting idle for the past week skimming through all of the comments on this thread...I haven't latched onto anything until Darius' comments. As a long-term user of Rise Vision (same as Darius), I would have to agree with his opinion regarding the ability to play offline after downloading the content.

These are the points:
1. No matter what, Rise Player has ALWAYS required internet to fully download the content and add it to the Cache. On my linux systems, I can find this folder and see the images, video's, etc.

2. Currently, a loss of internet connection still maintains a solid playback, so long as the items aren't set to refresh or be reliant on an internet connection..in which case they reach out without success and the widget breaks

3. To add the ability to have offline playback, from the last connection...regardless of rebooting the player doesn't really change anything that's already been downloaded into the cache folder...unless I don't understand the full process of how the Cache is emptied every reboot and if the Rise Player doesn't understand it can reach back to the local hard drive for those exact items...

4. What has Rise Professional added significantly to provide Offline playback in order to keep those same Cache files playing, regardless of reboot?

I can only see extra development around the web-based widgets, and those would be only to add a line about "if internet doesn't exist, keep existing content" ... that's it. The video's and graphics...they're already in the cache folder upon initial download and already continue to play (currently without reboot). To me, the loss of cache on reboot is a mistake in the initial code...especially when I see the files sitting on the hard drive.

I understand Rise offers an amazing service for free. Not to mention paid employee's who are dedicated to the community and the development of bug fixes and enhancements on the platform. The fact that I am converting my presentations from Classic to the Latest Platform is a testament to the continued service they provide...so I completely understand needing a monetary value from the extra development put into Offline Playback.

This is only my two cents in response to Darius' thoughts. I'm happy with continued development, regardless of cost structure. But to Darius' point, the product already exists to about 90%...adding the Video/Image cache last year and now Offline Playback are things that should have existed from the start. My main point is essential development versus product enhancements for a cost...
Thank you always to the Rise Vision Staff and to the Rise Community!

tony,

I think you're thinking of Rise Display Network, which was a completely different (premium) product. To my knowledge, Rise Vision has always been web based, and even our v1 player required an initial connection to the internet.

Joe,

Thanks for the detailed response. To answer your question in point number four, Rise Player needs an initial internet connection to make contact with our server to retrieve a Schedule, as well as the content that is supposed to be playing. Caching locally is one thing, telling the Rise Player what should be playing is something different. When Player also thinks it's supposed to reach out to the internet for dynamic, live content, it throws another wrench into the mix. It's my understanding that Rise Player Professional bypasses this requirement, and instead will send all of it's requests locally if an internet connection is not available. Significant developer and QA effort went into this release to ensure that these issues did not occur. What we came up with is a viable Offline Play mode that we believe will satisfy the customers that have requested it in the past.

I hope everyone is able to take advantage of the Rise Player Professional free trial, and if the use case and return on investment fit, subscribe to the product.
