What we did last week:

  • The technology selection for our new Rise Player communication platform is complete and we are going with an open source WebSocket solution using Node.js and uWS hosted on Google Compute Engine.

  • Reliability tracking for all of the latest Rise Player Display installations is now complete and we are currently at 96% overall reliability. Our goal is 99%. In case you are interested we are using big data with Google’s Big Query to collect the data in near real-time and Klipfolio’s dashboards to visualize the data and share it with the whole company. We have spent the last week poring over the data and investigating situations where the browser fails on a Display and the crash monitoring system restarts it. Problem areas include showing of external web pages that have memory leaks, very large image files, an obscure situation where there is a conflict between the done event in a Playlist and the done event of some Widgets, using too much intensive content, multiple videos, etc, on an underpowered media player, and in a number of cases the use of deprecated content. Our Community Success team has taken on the goal of finding and identifying every situation that could reduce our reliability below 99% and coordinating with the respective team within the company to get the problem closed, or work with the customer to eliminate unstable content, or too much content in the case of underpowered machines. From this point forward we will be updating the Community on our progress weekly, just like we are keeping you in the loop on our zero defect goal.

  • Speaking of zero defects: This week ended in a draw with opening a few and closing a few. We are at 4 open defects across all of our 60 active projects on GitHub.

  • The Apps team is working through UX designs to make the editor faster and easier to use combined with researching how we will show thumbnail images within the Editor when browsing Storage. Yes! Thumbnails. I know... ‘what took so long’. They are in the works!

  • We are continuing the work we started last week on the goal reviews of the previous quarter and setting priorities for the next quarter. Look for a blog post on how we do this collectively and remotely with maximum input and involvement from everyone.

  • We’re close to having the new Spreadsheet Widget (currently available as an early preview) updated to use the new Sheets v4 API.
