In case you missed it for the week ending April 29th

What we did last week

  • The next release of Rise Player that leverages Electron’s built in Chromium for rendering content has shipped and is being deployed on a staggered basis now. So far no issues showing up in our logs or reports of problems. This is exciting stuff and a major milestone for us.

  • Such a simple thing as writing clear, concise, user documentation shouldn’t be too hard right? Wrong. Big amount of work on it this week, many iterations, should be out in the next week or two.

  • Striving for ZERO open defects. Across 60 active projects on GitHub we had 25 open defects as of last week and we are now down to 19. Getting there slowly but surely.

  • Our design reviews to achieve real-time communication with our Rise Players are continuing and we are getting closer to understanding what we want. We are currently leaning at Firebase over Socket IO and Primus.

  • Did a neat experiment with Raspberry Pi3 to see what’s possible and discovered some improvements we can make to better enable Community support of Pi. Look for some shared articles and Rise Player tweaks on this in a couple of weeks.

  • Chrome 50 was tested with our core content

  • Our Creative team worked on a number of different projects including an Infoboard for Naples Community Hospital, a Market Wall for the University of Kansas and an interactive directory for the Foundation for Community Care.

  • We continued work on the next release of the Google Spreadsheet Widget and will be publishing an early preview to the Store soon!

What we have planned this week

  • Organizing our first SPRINT. Very exciting!

  • Keep killing bugs to achieve ZERO Defects.

  • Finalize our architecture and design for real-time communication with Rise Players.

  • Deploy our documentation improvements.

  • Deploy Rise Cache reliability improvements and Chrome 50 to legacy Players.

  • Deploy another release of the Rise Player with some cool shortcut icons for the start menu, better disk space management, and some hot keys to make it easier to shut the thing down (I know!).

  • In the new release of Rise Player, we'll also be adding in a new way to get to the debugging tools for the developers out there.

  • Implement the new Rise Player User Interface, quick preview of what is coming, see below this post or here and here.

  • We’re continuing work on the new Spreadsheet Widget.

See below for a sneak peek of the new Rise Player User Interface:

I am interested in following developments related to real time communications, FireBase/socket.io/Primus.

I'm using a monitoring server (zabbix) to watch for the Chrome process, which previously signaled that the Rise Player software had properly started. I've pinned all software versions a month ago, but noticed today that the Chrome process is no longer running, and I believe it has been replaced by Electron. Is this correct?

Player Version: RisePlayer 2016-04-22-19-30
Recommended Browser: 24.0.1312.56
Browser Version: Chrome 49.0.2623.75

Thanks for this very detailed rundown Mark!

I'd like to run this content over here on my Linux and Windows machines to see if I can recreate this same behaviour.

In the meantime, I'll reach out to you via in App so we can discuss getting a remote connection to these Linux machines to see if we can determine the reason they are not starting. I see that Ice Haus exists in our remote connection interface, but I can't connect to it.

I'll update this conversation with what we discover so all parties can be aware.

Thanks!

Mark,

One thing I am seeing when I look at the Displays Channel 51 and Ice Haus, is that yesterday they appeared to restart about 4 or 5 times, and then there is nothing in the log after that.

Today, one restarted at 6:30, the other at 7:15 am. Are those around the times that they crashed? Are they coming back online at those times?

Robb,
My apologies on the late reply, I've been putting out fires all morning. I'll be diving into your responses over lunch shortly and replying in-line. If you'd prefer to discuss in-app, my email login is dsigns@jaypeakresort.com.

Thanks for all the responses and help, it's greatly appreciated.

Robb,
I restarted both of those displays a few times yesterday and that is in line with user actions.

Ch51 has a Rise Console restart scheduled for 2:30a
Ice Haus has a Rise Console restart scheduled for 3:15a

I'm not sure about the restarts seen at 6:30a and 7:15a, below is local monitoring for the past 48hrs of the two machines.

I'll examine both machines for any scheduled restarts...

And let me know how you'll be reaching out, I have remote access to all machines and can install software as needed.

Thanks,
Mark

I'm not seeing a local restart scheduled in the task manager for the windows machine, and the nothing is scheduled via cron for the Ubuntu machines.

Here's local monitoring of Electron installer process for the past 48hrs.

Sounds like some great progress from the team - good job guys!

I did notice the Electron process in the ComputeStick we got last week.. I was going to look into it on Monday (I plugged it in about 15 min before I left for the weekend) :) So I'm to assume I can press Ctrl+Q to exit it? I tried a few ways of exiting the player with no luck before I left it.

These are some good updates, we appreciate you keeping the forum posted!

No, it's a different host, but same machine process. I can install the remote connection momentarily.

Mark...Darn it.

Let me investigate and I will let you know what I can determine.

Thanks!
