  • Updated 4 years ago
Effective November 17th, 2014, the Google Calendar Gadget will no longer be supported. You must take action immediately to avoid disruption to your content.

How do I know if I’m using the Gadget vs the Widget?

Go to your presentation and view the placeholder properties that contains the Google Calendar item. Each item in your playlist will indicate if it is a Widget or a Gadget as shown in the image below.

What do I do?

If you are using the Google Calendar Gadget, you need to migrate to the new Google Calendar Widget before November 17th!

Watch the short video here to learn how;

Does this mean that the calendar gadget will simply stop working on November 17 or it will just not be supported after that date?  What is the reason for this change?  I've got a nice calendar presentation working with the gadget and it seems that I cannot make it look the same with the widget as the widget seems to be not as functional as the gadget.  For example, the gadget allowed layout changes via xml and css.  How can this be done with the widget?

Thank you

The old Gadget will likely stop working after November 17th. Google is deprecating part of the API that we used with the Gadget.

In terms of using a modified layout for the Widget, the only suggestion I can make at the moment would be to take and host the code from the Widget and set it up manually to use a different layout.

Thanks.

Thanks for the explanation, I'll see what I can do with diving into the code to get the same layout.

Can you give me some pointers as to where I can get the code and getting it hosted so I can experiment?  I believe once I have the code, I can add it under the Gadget menu as a Widget with the hosting information.   I probably won't need to change much at this point - the main thing it seems with the widget version is that there is no spacing between the time and title in each entry - it sort of all runs together.  Being able to add some more space between those elements would make it easier to read.

Thanks

You can find the source code for the Calendar here.  You're correct that you can add it to your Gadget's page (as a Widget) when completed.

Thanks.

I have uploaded the contents of the zip archive to a hosting provider and added the url under the Gadget menu.  I can add "Your Content" and it sees the name of the copied calendar widget but when I click configure on it, I get Error: NOT_FOUND.    What am I missing?

Thanks

When you add it to the list of your Gadgets, ensure that you've selected it as a Widget.

You'll then need to provide both the URL and Custom UI URL. Here's how they are currently set for the default Calendar Widget.

I had Widget selected, however, I didn't have the URL and UI boxes correct, which they are now.

Now when I add it via "Your Content" and click "configure", I get nothing.  Nothing on the screen changes and after waiting a bit, the placeholder box is unresponsive and so is everything else on the open tab and I have to close the tab.

I can paste those links into a new tab and view source and it shows the source ok.

This was deployed just a short while ago.  You may need to clear your Display's cache for the changes to be seen. If your Displays are set to perform a Scheduled Restart, the cache will be cleared as part of the process.  You can go to the Display's page and press the Restart Player button to have this process be done right away.

Thanks.

I went to the display location this evening to check it out and noticed that it had changed in two ways - there is now more space between the time and title and the font is different.  The font in the widget settings is Verdana, however, on the display it's some sort of serif font, not sure which one actually, but it looks better anyway this way.  However, I'd still like to understand why the font is different on the display vs what's set in the widget.

Another thing I noticed is when I returned back to my desk, when I preview the presentation, the placeholder with the calendar doesn't show any longer but I can still right click and configure the widget - but it just doesn't preview.  It's still live on the display though, strange.

I took a peek at your Presentation and didn't see anything wrong with the Placeholder not showing, or the Calendar not showing in Preview.  All looked well there. If you're still experiencing issues, could you try clearing the cache on your browser to see if that corrects it? The font looks like the Verdana font in Preview, is it still showing the different font on the Display? I've seen situations where Linux may not have the font referenced in the Widget Settings and shows a different one as a result.

Thanks.

Thanks Neal, I should be have been clearer - the placeholder was there and the widget was there, but the calendar was not showing in preview.  I had cleared the cache in Chrome to no avail, however, doing it a second time seems to have done the trick.  Now I am seeing the Verdana font in preview as expected.

About Linux not having the font, that makes total sense now that you mention it and I've seen that happen elsewhere with Linux.  I'm sure that's the issue.

Thanks for all the help in getting this small tweak implement in the widget (the spacing).  I would still like to learn how to modify and deploy the widget myself for such simple changes.  To do so, I'm installing an Ubuntu guest under VMware and will try to following the widget README instructions to set up the environment.  I'll make a note of my travels and start a separate thread so that others can learn as I go.

I can see the calendar on my "preview," but it does not show on my display.  I have a CENIQUE C-110 and it worked perfectly with the old gadget.  The Widget somehow does not display it.  What other steps must I take to see the calendar on my display?

The new Google Calendar Widget is not displaying properly on the Cenique media players. Our development team has identified the error and is working with Rise Vision to correct the issue. Please email us at support@cenique.com to create a support ticket and we will notify you when the we have a resolution.

A fix was deployed earlier today that addresses the issues pertaining to the Calendar Widget not appearing on Cenique's devices.  You may need to clear your devices cache for the changes to take effect.

Thanks.
