Important Message re: Display Blocking

We have been investigating issues related to slow UI load times with our Applications. In some cases, a request we expect to complete in one second or less can take 20-30 seconds! For those that have experienced this first hand, we’re sorry.

We have discovered a small percentage of active Displays (less than 1%) that are flooding the Rise Vision servers with request resulting in the slow UI load times.

To correct this issue, we will be enabling Display Blocking on Friday, February 6th at 8:00am CST. If we detect that a Display is sending an abnormal amount of request to our Servers, we will block that Display. You can read more about Display Blocking and what to look for if your Display becomes blocked here.

Please note that if Display Blocking was enabled today, the only Displays that would become blocked are those that fall into the category described above (less than 1% of active Displays).

If you have any questions, please let us know.

How can we find out which display is sending the abnormal amount of requests?

If I understood you correctly, I closed down the Rise Vision app, and opened Chromium independently, then browsed to my presentation address. The presentation runs fine this way.

See the two screenshots of the Developer Tools. There now is a Javascript error it looks like.

Joe,

I was proposing that you install our chrome app player on your ubuntu machine to replace the native player that is currently installed, then accessing developer console within that player.

Hi Blake,
That is the player I was originally using, and is the one that becomes blocked. What I am unable to do from that player is access any type of GUI or Development console in regards to the Chromium Browser. I believe you're having the Rise Vision Chrome App running in a specialized Kiosk mode...to which I am unable to utilize any keystrokes to bring up the content needed to diagnose. Can you verify that the keystrokes CTRL+Shift+I work on a Linux system running the Chrome App Player?

My only other idea is to update the OS, currently it's on Mint 13 (unsupported now)...so I plan on upgrading it up to Lubuntu 14.04 and trying the Chrome App Player again. Although, the Chromium version is the latest version.

Thank you for your help!

Joe,

Do you have any custom HTML content in your presentations that are specifying refresh rates?

That's what's odd...its a plain video and image presentation, using your latest apps. I've tried rebuilding only 3 or so of the video's and still the block. The only thing I've successfully done is produce 1 image for some time without becoming blocked. Initially I did have a Google Spreadsheet Presentation playing in, but that was removed early on, thinking it was triggering the block. Maybe we try an updated OS load on it and see how well it does, I'm thinking that either a poor connection is triggering something or the OS is having issues....I'm performing an update remotely for the moment until I am able to visit the physical location.
Thanks so far for your help!

Hi Blake,
I have an update on the above thread. We've tried re-installing a new OS on the machine being blocked, now using Lubuntu 14.04 (previously Mint 13). This didn't work. We were in the process of thinking it was an issue with the machine so we built a brand new Gigabyte with Lubuntu 14.04 and let it run on the same presentation, in a controlled environment, over ethernet...this morning it is also blocked. So that eliminates the locations WiFi and hardware being an issue. I've rebuilt the presentation twice, and still experienced the issue. The content running in the presentation is full screen Video's and Images...to add to the confusion those pieces of content are running mixed in with more content elsewhere on a number of our other advertising displays without any issue.

I am out of idea's aside from, having Rise Vision review for any possible issues on your end. Below is the Preview link to the original presentation.

http://preview.risevision.com/Viewer.html?type=presentation&id=b3d2480a-623a-48b9-bcaa-874766111...

Presently I am running another locations Presentation on the controlled environment machine that also became blocked last night, so we will see how it does throughout the day. I will post whether it becomes blocked as well. The Location Display ID having issues is XJBV6UJPQ3YV

Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide to assist in troubleshooting this block.
Thank you!

Hi Joe,

I've had our technician that has been in charge of blocked displays take a brief look at your presentation. There was nothing that popped out to her right away other than that you're hosting your video content yourself. Would you be willing to start a Rise Storage trial and house your media there? This will tell us if it's an issue with your hosting, or if we should keep looking at the presentation.

We also now offer premium Rise Support on a subscription basis. If you would like one of our techs to take a deeper look into your presentation, including running it locally, a support subscription would be a good choice.

Thanks,
Blake

Thanks Blake, we have over 50 displays utilizing our file server, it's doubtful that hosting our content is the issue.

I think I've pinned it down to a couple of video's causing a hangup at the end of the video. These video's have been present in the playlist for over 2 years. Neither of them have issue's in other locations. My local machine is performing fine with the video's. However, the unit in question and a remote test unit are both experiencing hangup issues.

Through rigorous testing, I am chalking this up to some type of bad hardware. I'm going to try and rebuilt the video's to see if that solves it...but for the time being I'd say the block occurred when the problematic video becomes frozen at the end of it's 18 second run and causes the player to sit for about 2-5 minutes and finally start over from the beginning. Thus not playing any of the elements behind the bad video in the schedule.

My current solution is to take static screenshots of those video's and place them in as images.

I'm not sure if you've seen this before, but just so you are aware for future sake. I'll update you once I've discovered more.

To add an update:
Originally I do not know what was causing the blocking of a media player, however after updating everything and sorting out the playback issue via thread posted below. I have confirmed that the playback issue above is solved.

I will report any further issues regarding the fix in the following thread, as the above issue has been figured out.
