Google Sheets Gadget down?

My presentation is built around the old google sheets gadget.  Starting today the display isn't loading any of the sheets content.  Has the old API been shut off?

Kevin,

Not that I am aware of, but I would recommend updating to the latest version of the image widget just to hedge any future problems.

Could you provide a link to your presentation so I can check it out?

Thanks Blake,

Does this link give you what you need?http://preview.risevision.com/Viewer.html?type=presentation&id=df04b23e-83f8-4808-9dbd-110578015f06

Agreed I need to rebuild for the widget, I've been putting it off as we discuss a complete redesign.

Hmmm, my preview window is now slowly adding some of the sheets one at a time.

Kevin,

I'm seeing the spreadsheets load on my end. Could you be having a network disruption of some sort?

Previewing in three different browsers and each is showing a different combination of elements.  I'm suspecting that google may be throttling the requests due to too short of a refresh rate.I wonder how long it will take to reset that after adjusting the refresh rate?

It could be a network issue, but I don't think so.  I'm previewing from home with a completely different ISP from where the display is.

Kevin,

Just wanted to let you know I'm now seeing the issue here on your presentation. I'm going to look into this and get back to you when I have an answer.

In the meantime, it may be best if you transition over to using the widget. The gadget is deprecated.

Kevin,

After taking a closer look, I can see the problem is actually with your custom layout. If I disable the custom layout, the spreadsheet displays. That would be the best place to start.

Thanks!

Thanks for looking again, I wish I'd thought to try that.Perhaps the web server hosting my layout files is the problem. I don't think it's the content of the layout files since each of the 5 spreadsheet items is showing up in at least one of my preview tests in various browsers.
Meanwhile, I've been working to rebuild using the widget.  Getting the same layout working in the new layout format is taking some time.

After a difficult week of struggling to recreate this google sheets based presentation using the new widget, today I find the old gadget is working again.

I would really like to make the transition to the widget since I know the gadget will likely be eliminated someday.  Unfortunately, the widget has a serious reported bug when using custom layouts that hasn't been addressed.

I tried working around the bug but found my player crashing with a screen wide "Aw Snap" error every 20 minutes or so.  After another minute or so it would reboot and start the cycle over again.  Showing the customers an error screen and then the windows desktop every 20 minutes just isn't acceptable.  So it's back to the gadget based display for us.

I sure hope the widget works properly with custom layouts by the time the gadget gets shut down.  The owner is already nudging me to find something other than risevision.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for bringing this up. I'll research this today and log a defect with the team if needed.

Here is a link to the widget based presentation that's crashing the player:
http://preview.risevision.com/?type=presentation&id=ef89c99f-9f73-41e9-b3a4-939fab0be611

I was having a cycle of crash and full reboot with the presentation on an older version of the player.  Updated the player to the latest version and now it's the "Aw Snap" error and relaunch of the player.

The widget based presentation uses custom layouts like the gadget based presentation before, but there is a known bug with custom layouts and the widget reported here at github:
https://github.com/Rise-Vision/widget-google-spreadsheet/issues/130

I can't be sure that's what's crashing my player. But since the presentation includes several placeholders with data from the google sheets widget, and all are custom layouts, it looks like a possibility.

The same presentation without the custom layouts was stable for days but terribly ugly and doesn't fit all the content.

Kevin,

I've had your presentation up and running on a local display this morning using the Spreadsheet Widget as well as your custom layout. I have not witnessed a crash and restart at all. Could you do me a favor and perform a complete uninstall of the Rise Player on that system and install from scratch?

Did a complete uninstall and reinstall without issue.

Same error and relaunch at around 20 minutes.

Kevin,

I've made some changes to your local presentation that I am testing on, but at this point I have not been able to recreate the crashing issue that you have described. Can you tell me the OS and version that you are using on your media player?

The player is running on Windows 7 with no outstanding updates.

Player Version: RisePlayer 2016.03.09.10.00

Viewer Version: 1-06-201603091838

Browser Version: Chrome 48.0.2564.116

I've been looking for a Windows 10 machine to borrow for testing.  No luck yet.

Thanks Kevin,

I've just been able to replicate. I believe I had the wrong presentation from your account before. I'll take a look at what I can do to either get this fixed or get a bug logged.

Thank you Blake.  I'm relieved to know that it's not just in our player.

If there's anything you need from me for troubleshooting, just let me know.

Kevin,

I've checked with our developers, and your layout is being impacted by the bug listed here https://github.com/Rise-Vision/widget-google-spreadsheet/issues/130

I'll note that bug and try to get some eyes on it.
