Google Sheet Scrolling Breaks

I have setup a Google Sheet that will eventually have over 150 rows with scoring results from a academic competition at our school. I've inserted the API key and setup a placeholder to query the Google sheet (which is public), and set it to scroll continuously (slow). It has a refresh refresh rate of 5 minutes.

The display shows the results and scroll perfectly for about 3-5 minutes and then the scroll slows WAY down. Once the scroll gets to the bottom of the sheet it normally fades out, goes to the top of the sheet and fades back in; however, as I noted when it slows way down, it also stops going to the top of the sheet.

For example:
  • screen turns on
  • google sheet scrolls properly to the last row
  • scroll finishes, pauses, and goes back to the first row
  • wait 3-5 minutes
  • scroll slows down
  • once the scroll reaches the last row, instead of going to the first it goes back to a random starting point

Second this...

We're having the same problem on several displays. It just started happening out of nowhere.

RV is a really great digital signage product. I'm hopeful we can get this working by the time of our competition tomorrow. I've been tweaking settings ad deleting white space from the Google Sheet but it still fails after 3-5 minutes. I can reset the refresh rate but that kind of defeats the purpose of our endeavor.

Initially we were going to use Google Slides to present our scores but given that Google Slides presentations do not auto-refresh after certain intervals, I wanted an unmanned solution. RV and Google Sheets worked great for our needs a couple years ago.

Here's the Google Sheet's link.

I'm including a screenshot of our refresh settings in case that is helpful.

Matt, is this happening on one widget or both widgets in the presentation? If only one, which one, left or right?

Both. I have both left and right widgets linked to one Google Sheet, using one API key, but the sheet has two worksheets in it. Hopefully that makes sense?

Matt,

It looks like we have a defect in the Google Spreadsheet Widget that causes scrolling to be unreliable when a custom API is set up to refresh more often than 60 minutes.

I've logged the defect, you can track it here.

So by that token, if we temporarily remove the custom API key

OR

if we set the refresh time to greater than 60 minutes on the API key...

will it function correctly?

Matthew, if you remove the API key it should scroll normally.

Ok, we will just use an alternative for now since ours needs to update at least every 10 minutes. I appreciate your time!

Thanks!

What kind of alternatives do you have? I'm interested seeing is how unreliable Rise Vision has been as of late. It would be great to have something to fall back on since these widgets update dynamically if a bad version gets out there, there's no way to revert to an older stable version.

Well unfortunately our alternative for this scenario is just Google Slides, which does not auto-refresh. However, we will have to settle with it not being automated to ensure accuracy.

I am very pleased with Rise Vision outside of this issue, hopefully it can be fixed soon!

Thanks for letting us know, Matt — we'll keep you posted on an improved solution.

@Matthew: I'm very sorry to hear about the unreliable experience you're having lately. I'd love to find out how you've been affected so I can share it with the rest of the team and keep you updated on our priorities. Would you mind reaching out at rayanne.langdon@risevision.com?

Matt, make custom HTML page, embed Google Slides, and pull that page to your presentation with the Web page Widget. You can then setup refresh every minute if you need. Works for me flawlessly.

Matt, alternatively, you could place, for example, 3 instances of the Google Sheets in the same placeholder. Set the first instance to show names from 1 to 50, second from 51 to 100 etc. Apply fade (or any other) transition effect to the placeholder. This way you will avoid scrolling problems, be able to use any refresh time you need, and IMO this would look pretty nice... since that scroll is stupid anyways.

We just tested it. You can keep your custom API Key entered into the widget, but simply changing your refresh time to 60 minutes will temporarily resolve the problem you are experiencing until they can sort this out.

Matt(s),

Our developers rolled back the Spreadsheet Widget to an earlier version to tackle another defect that was introduced. It appears that this rollback fixed the issue that you are seeing. Can you test it out by re=publishing your presentations and let us know what you're seeing?

Thanks!

I just republished the spreadsheet test we have setup in house. It didn't seem that setting the 60 minute refresh and keeping the API key actually worked at all after the entire night had elapsed. When I came in this morning it was at a dead halt... I republished and we'll see whats up now.

Matthew,

It actually looks like you'll need to restart the media player in order for it to pick up the new widget.

Thanks.

I republished the presentation (just changed a font color, saved and published), I watched the preview scroll for about 15-20 minutes and didn't notice any hiccups. Thanks Blake!

I appreciate the awesome support from RV.
