Events HTML Presentation Q & A

The Events Template has been created to display a series of custom events that rotate into the screen view one at a time. It can be modified to accommodate various markets and segments. A preview of the template can be seen here:

http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/risemedialibrary-395c64e5-2930-460b-881e-009aabb157df/content-templates/events/events.html

The template utilizes the Google Sheets web component, so the content of the slides is taken directly from a spreadsheet. 4 slides are then rotated through the presentation in a continuous loop using keyframe animations. For full details on how to set up this template, please view the documentation here: https://github.com/Rise-Vision/content-templates/tree/gh-pages/events

Thank you very much for taking the time to check out this template. If you have any questions regarding the Events template, please post them below. Thank you.

I am trying to utilize the events template that was posted on the RiseVision Github. I am having issues with text from the spreadsheet overlapping. It seems that if I add more than 4 events to the spreadsheet they overlap. Is that a limitation of the events template? Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your comment, Mark. At the moment, the Events template is set up to show a maximum of 4 slides, therefore when the data for the 5th slide is added this is being displayed on top of the first slide.

Is there any way to change the number of slides it rotates through?  We would like to have one for each day of the week, displaying the main event for that date.

Hi Donald, thank you for your question.

There are a few solutions that should work for you but I was wondering, do you want the 7 slides to rotate through every minute or so, or do you want to show only one slide per day, for example, the main event for Monday displays only on Monday, the main event for Tuesday only on Tuesday, etc?

Look forward to hearing back from you, and thanks again!

Hey Peter, we would like 7 slides to rotate, like you said, about a minute per slide. Our TV with this template is outside our cafeteria and there is always a wait time outside, so having it rotate through will allow students to see/remind them of our upcoming events throughout the week.

Hi Donald, there are two options available to have this change made.

  1. You are more than welcome to modify the Template to suit your needs. If you have some questions along the way just post them here and we'll do our best to help. Have you tried making changes to support what you are looking for yet?
  2. If you would like for us to make the change, would you mind posting your requirements in a Google Doc? Nothing crazy, just a bullet point list should do. Reply back with a link to that doc and we'll confirm how much time you should look at purchasing here, https://store.risevision.com/product/31/rise-content-design.
Thanks!

Im' having some difficulty displaying this.  i followed the directions , leaving all the original source images, hosting all the events folder files in Rise Storage, and pointing to the HTML file as a URL in a schedule.  it is not working.  what am I missing here?

Thank you for your question. If you could clarify in what way it is not working that would be very helpful. For example, is there anything showing up on the screen or is it completely blank? Thanks.

Tri-C,

It looks like it's not finding the images that should be hosted in your /events/ folder on Rise Storage. Can you confirm that the events folder is hosted in your root storage directory, the images are contained within the events folder, the names have not changed, and you can access them by selecting the checkbox next to one, and clicking create link?

The issue is deeper than that.  Try and download the events/  folder and view the HTML file - you will get nothing.  All the other templates in the content-templates depository work just fine.  There are issues with "cross origin resource sharing" if trying to open the HTML file locally using file://.  If the folder is hosted on the web then the errors are "mixed content" and 403 forbidden.  Way beyond my realm.

I'm also trying to use this events page for an upcoming set of events this week. It seems that the page won't render when I try to open it locally to see my changes. Also how should I go about uploading this to Rise Storage? There is currently no way to upload anything but single files. To upload the entire contents of events, while creating sub-folders would be very time consuming.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also I've just downloaded the zip again from Github, and i can confirm that all other presentations work correctly by opening the .html file locally. Everything displays correctly. Except for events which is blank. I'm guessing there was a screw up on Git or something.

I understand why I wouldn't see any data from a google sheet locally. However the page in its entirety does not display at all. No background image, or formatting of any kind. I should be at least seeing the background and logos in some form. Also how would I go about uploading the contents of the events folder to Rise Storage? There is no way to upload folders with subdirectories. This seems like a huge issue in terms of using these templates from github on rise storage.

Honestly it seems that rise storage needs a bit more work. The biggest thing would be thumbnail support so I can see what images are what, as well as the ability to upload entire folders.

Bryant and Tri-C,

The developer of this layout is now back from vacation. I'm going to forward this thread to him and ask for any input he may have.

I'm not seeing any data from the shared google sheet. I uploaded "events" to Amazon S3 as is with no changes and everything works except for the feed from the spreadsheet. My suspicion is that amazon S3 doesn't have "bower" Or I'm missing something simple. I'm a little confused

Thank you again Peter! However I'm currently developing a bruise on my forehead caused by the top of my desk. I'm not familiar with amazon s3 so I don't know how to get terminal access to run bower. I may look for another hosting solution, this one is over my head.

Ouch, sounds painful! I am not that familiar with Amazon hosting myself, but I was under the impression that you would run the terminal commands locally and once you get the folders on your computer you could upload them to Amazon as you would with the index.html files etc. There are a few good tutorials online on using the command line/terminal for this depending on if you are on Windows or Mac.

Good luck!

Peter

You are right! I installed git and bower (twice) and ran it local, then uploaded the files. It works perfect. I can't find the file to change the Apply today footer anywhere in the folder. Is that file hosted somewhere else? I would like to change those words. Thanks Peter!

That's great! The 'Apply Today' text is actually being brought in through a second instance of the google sheet component, so you can find the text for it on the 'Sheet 2' tab of the master google sheet I shared with you yesterday.

To add your own text you can set up a new google sheet and change the 'key' within the component settings in the HTML to target the new sheet and you will then be able to customize the text to whatever you need. The difference between the two instances of the sheet component is that one targets tab 1 (for the job information) and the second targets tab 2 for the footer text, using the 'tab-id' parameter.

The steps for this, including where to find the key, are in the readme file of the repo.

Hope that helps!

I should've got the hint when I saw the file named READ ME but I thought I was too smart. Thank you and thank you to your company for the information. There's no doubt that Rise Vision will come out as top contender for the best signage software on the market. Thank you Peter!
