Emergency Weather Alerts

  • Under Consideration
We are a small organization that doesn't have the resources to set up an enterprise level Rave or E2campus system for CAP alerts - the only officially supported systems for Rise.  It would be nice to have weather alerts pop up as they are announced, however.

However, the National Weather Service does provide CAP-compliant weather alerts through Atom RSS Feeds which you can select for whatever area you are interested in.

Rise nicely provides a URL for each company to use for receiving alerts and allows configuration of which alerts to show on the system.

So is there a reason why one could not just push the RSS feed to the URL via a POST?  Does Rise need anything more than what is in an Weather Service RSS XML bulletin to work?

Here is a rss link to all the current USA alerts as an example: http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/us.php?x=0

Thoughs??

In reviewing the CAP feed, i now see now that NWS does not use:
  • Headline
  • Description
  • Instruction
but instead uses:
  • Event
  • Areadesc
  • Summary
There is no way to expose these in Rise as under 'settings', there are only options for filtering the first three.

Any work arounds?

Hey Ben, hope you don''t mind if I drop the "biology", just doesn't feel right ;-).

We are revisiting Alerts in the next month or two and our first goal is to replace the existing functionality with our new UX, that you can see in early release format here https://displays.risevision.com, https://schedules.risevision.com and https://edittor.risevision.com and once that is complete we will be adding new functionality to make a stand alone app, etc. that can feed alerts to that small organizations don't need a rave, etc.. This is the roadmap, all out there, and not happening over night.

If you could write up a google doc of what you would like exactly for the above and share it here and we can collaborate with the community on it I will try to fit these changes into the first release. No promises however, if they require server side rework I have to be careful as it can delay the project considerably so it may have to come in a subsequent release. But I will try if you can put the work into really mapping out the details for me.

Interested?

And, I am going to change this topic to an idea and hopefully we can get some community support for it. If anyone else wants this, please vote it up.

Thanks!

Ben, thanks for the doc, quick recap of what you are looking for:

1. Display Alerts from the US National Weather Service in ATOM format, not CAP 1.2, as per this definition http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/us.atom for a User specified area such as http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/wwaatmget.php?x=CAZ202&y=0

2. Have the ability to show a map of the affected alert area

3. Have the ability to enter User defined (not generated from a CAP service) Alerts and broadcast them to Displays

Do I have the above right?

And, if I do, a question on the ATOM feed. Is it your intention that the ATOM Alert takes over the entire screen until such time that the Alert expires, as defined within the ATOM feed?

Thanks

Is there anything similar and easy to setup for Amber Alerts in Ontario, Canada, or for weather in the Greater Toronto Area?

Shai,

Is there an RSS Feed or Web Page that you can use that would show this information? If so, you may be able to display it using the Web Page Widget or RSS Widget.

Sorry Bryon - I must have missed this comment from you before.

#1 - Yes!
#2 - Nice, but not required. Phase II in my mind
#3 - This would also be great!

As to the last question - I think that would be the case for certain alerts.  Not for advisories or Watches, but warnings, yes.  Would it be possible for there to be an option of screen take over and/OR displayed in the schedule?  (Perhaps even take over for 10 min then add to schedule - again, perhaps a phase 2 possibility)

No problem. At this point it will be the fall before we consider doing more with Alerts. If others are interested voting this up will help us gauge interest and usage. Thanks
