Embedded Presentations Going Away Completely?

It was mentioned in another post that embedded presentations are not going to be included in the new editor. We use embedded presentations in our custom presentation builder that we are developing. We are submitting our presentations to the API so we won't be using the editor for most of what we are doing. Will that functionality still be available when using the API or do we need to find another way?

Stephen,

Embedded presentations have created many reliability issues and we are moving away from them. They will remain in current presentations, and if/when they are slated for total deprecation we'll let you know well in advance through a post on the community.

I would recommend finding an alternative to using Embedded Presentations at this time. Our Community Success team is currently looking into alternatives to the most common uses, so if you would like to share any of your use cases here, we would really appreciate it. If we're able to find some alternatives to Embedded Presentations, we will be sure to share them with our community of users!

Hey Blake,

The only issue we have that we can't easily figure out with schedules is that all of our current displays have a scroller that is always on the bottom of the screen. For example, we have a weather map with a sidebar ad in one presentation that is followed by a full screen video in another presentation. As we are switching between the two presentations, we have current weather conditions constantly scrolling at the bottom of the screen.

We have tried using a schedule and including the scroller in both presentations, but switching back and forth between two different instances of the scroller causes it to jump because they aren't always in sync.

Blake,

One way that I really use embedded presentations is to show a DEMO of displays in my sub-companies. For example..

Company A (Main Company)
- DEMO BOX 1 (embedded, points to whatever company/pres I want to view)
- DEMO BOX 2 (embedded, points to whatever company/pres I want to view)

Company B (Sub-Company)
- DISPLAY 1 (shows pres 1)
- DISPLAY 2 (shows pres 2)
- Presentation 1
- Presentation 2

Company C (Sub-Company)
- DISPLAY 1 (shows Pres 1)
- DISPLAY 2 (shows Pres 2)
- Presentation 1
- Presentation 2

I need a way to preview here in the office (my main company) an actual presentation on a real display. Preview will not work since it doesn't pay attention to schedules. I need to show it here as it would be running at the sub-company. I don't want to put a Display under each sub-company.. I would then be editing the Display ID in my box all the time. My solution is to do Embedded Presentations on my Demo Boxes.. then to change which presentation it points to, I just go into my sub-company, get the presentation ID, and update it. I have a little txt overlay to remind me what DEMO box/hardware it's actually running on, but essentially I am giving myself an in-house demo of a running site in the field.

The only other idea I have would be, going into the sub-company, copying over every bit if HTML, and bring it over to my DEMO BOX presentation. That's not ideal given (1) It isn't as elegant as just changing one presentation ID, and (2) It does not get updated when I update the sub-company presentation. I might have this running constantly at my side while I'm working on an individual presentation for a sub-company.

What would the Community Success Team recommend I do for displaying multiple sub-company presentations on my in-house test device?

Thank you!

We created a "global" presentation. We have it setup as the default for the players.

The global presentation has the show for every display. Then I go to each schedule to add the shows for the specific location and add the global to the end. That way we can update all the global shows in one place and have custom content for each display.

Hi Brian,

Can you provide a little more detail about this?  How are you using the presentation in a presentation with this scenario?  Where does the presentation within a presentation come in to play?

I built out our schedule according to Joseph Mayberry's suggestion. It solved the problem for us.

This will be a real issue for me if the ability to embed presentations in a presentation is disabled.

I created a display infrastructure in the old editor which was working fine and then tried using the new editor and liked the new interface better, but noticed I could not embed another presentation in my global template.  I then found this posting and wanted to add my two cents.

My setup that I am currently testing and proposing to use for my company is to have the main company setup with corp presentations and then setup sub companies for each site.  In each sub company there would be presentations setup for each department for local content.  This enables me to have local presentations for each site and have corp communications pushed down to each site as well.  This part would not be affected by the new version.

I have a 1080 display setup that has my base screen that is a modified version of the Business Landscape Template 1 that I use as a global template.  In this global template, I set a placeholder on the left side of the display and made the resolution 1280x1024.  Thjen I created separate presentations that are 1280 x 1024 that each department can then edit and adjust for their needs.  This creates a uniform setting and the news updates still appear.  It is a very seamless look and looks very professional.  This is a critical component that made me want to use your product.  I have embedded videos and Google sheets and Google slides and have not run into an issue.  I would be very disappointed to see this function disappear.

Thanks,
Marty

Thank you Marty - really good information.  We are still actively reviewing all the different ways people use presentation in a presentation now and welcome all input on this subject.  We'll be updating here in the community as we proceed, so keep an eye out for that.

Thanks again!

Throwing in my two cents here.  We have several displays around our campus and have created a "master" slide show that will play on all screens in addition to content specific to a particular location.  This way we can collect announcements and slides and send them out to all screens in one action.  This is easier both for the people submitting info to us, and easier for us as administrators.
Secondly, we have the "master" slide show presentation set up so an administrator may change content in the "master" placeholder without the user accessing the main presentation as viewed on the screen.  This cuts down on accidental changes or deletions of a more intricate presentation with multiple placeholders.
Having things set up this way has cut down on accidental changes and has allowed us to save time by aggregating info to send out to multiple locations.  Rise would become much less useful for us without this feature due to the added labor of updating so many screens with the same info.  Similar to what others have said above...

Kendrick,

Thanks!  Just curious - on the presentations that are NOT the master presentations  (the ones that you insert into the master)  Are all the presentations in the same account or are you pulling the 'sub presentations' from sub companies?

We have done so in tests and it has worked by just copying and pasting the presentation id.  I don't know if it is stable or supported though.

"Sub-presentations" are mostly within the same company, but we do have a couple of sub-companies taking content as well.  We have been doing this for a couple of years and haven't run into any problems that I'm aware of, but I believe we have only been sharing video, images, and google calendars in this way.  Other items may have run here and there but those three are the bulk of what we display.

Kendrick,

Good answer - yes, that does work.  Even if a company isn't a sub company.  I could send you the presentation ID of a presentation I have in my company and you could add it to your presentation.    Stable all depends on what kind of stuff I pump into my presentation.  If my presentation is stable, all will be good.   Now regarding supported, that's really the general topic of this conversation.  As we move forward into the new editor, this feature won't be available.  Once the new editor becomes the default, then presentation in a presentation will no longer be supported.  But keep in mind that when the new editor becomes the default, the old editor is not going away - it just won't be supported by us any longer. Presentation in a presentation will still be there and will continue to work.

Another thing to keep in mind - the whole platform is open source, so anyone can go in and grab the elements they like and keep them going.  Check out the Riseberry conversation here in the community - we don't support Raspberry Pi players, but some people have taken our software and made it work and support other users with it here in the community.

Heck, someone might even get into our APIs and figure out a way to make a presentation in a presentation widget and put it for sale in the store.

I also needed a way to view my Sub-Company presentations inside of my main company.. so we arrived at embedded presentations for that purpose. I don't wan't to just share a template.. I want to view the actual presentation from that sub company on my device in the main company, viewing edits as I go.

I went and added another presentation from another sub-company and it displayed which is going to work out great for what I need it to do.

Now seeing that you can send any presentation to any one running the platform from anywhere, doesn't that raise a security issue?

The ability to embed presentations within presentation is criticial to the presentation configurations and to the complex of sub-companies at my instititution.  Embedded presentations was one of the features that caused us to move to RiseVision originally and have been the mainstay of our configuration. Can the HTML code generated in the older editor be installed in the new editor, tweaked, and run successfully when the tweak includes an embedded presentation? Is the deprecation that of the editor's abiltity to work with embedded presentations or will embedded presentations no longer be supported by the players ?

We're currently using sub presentations to streamline updating of a snow report comprised of 6 google sheets that feeds into a playlist ~6x times and then feeds to a second presentation which is scheduled to play at certain times on the same display. This creates 7 instances of 6 google sheets, which all need to be identical. If we were to move directly to google drive sheets, it would require a quite a few changes to for a colorway shift. This same presentation also feeds to another display.

We also have 3 lobby presentations setup with a snow report, each feeding from the same embedded presentation of 6 google drive sheets, but with a different colorway than the scenario outline above. The same issue arises, where instead of 1 change, we'd have to make 3.

Everyone, I've consolidated the unique uses cases for embedded presentations into the conversation here, https://getsatisfaction.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/the-future-of-embedded-presentations.

I'm going to close this conversation so please provide any additional feedback into the one I've linked.

Thanks!
