Having trouble displaying the contents of a single cell - Range B1:B1 or the like.

I've only tested on fields that are auto populated on demand.  For instance - in making a menu board tonight I have a spreadsheet with all the cells for the menu in one sheet.  And a filter call to a separate sheet for the day's (or tomorrows...) menu items.  This sheet has the following formula in cell A1 - =filter(Full_Menu!A:D, Full_Menu!A:A=today())

This populates in cells A1:D1 the menu items based on today's date.  In the regular sheets widget, I can display this data.  In the Beta I cannot.

If I extend the range C1:D1, then I can get something to pop up, but the text is truncated at 48px font even though the placeholder is 500 tall.

Also - It might increase user friendliness if you were to include a cell option with table and range..

Preview of working presentation with old Widget...

Hi Biologyben, you can now show a range that is just a single cell. Let me know if you run into any other issues.

Thanks!

Hi there, when I try to display something with the widget I have the following problems:
  1. data does show up, but sometimes after 10 or more seconds
  2. the table columns are a fixed width that is too small to show my content. And when I format each column with a specific width, it does not change.
I do like the option to set row height and that seems to be working.
Link to presentation with problem: http://preview.risevision.com/?type=presentation&id=825a556c-1b4b-4b73-9357-7031bd57e46c

Thank you

Alan

When I specify a range it works like a charm. Only problem is, sometimes there will be 2 rows that are filled in, other times 5 rows. I don't want to change the range everytime somebody adds or removes something from the spreadsheet.

So the option to ignore empty cells, so they don't show, would be perfect in my case. Otherwise my placeholder is empty for some time while the empty cells are scrolling through it.

Am I being clear enough? Not so easy to explain...

Thank you

Makes perfect sense Jelle. And we'll queue up work to handle empty rows.

Appreciate the feedback!

+1 for not showing empty columns and rows since I'm not sure how many will be needed each day in order to display.  I know a high end cap of how many will be needed, but many days it will be less.

I have not tested with the new widget, but I know that before I've used the filter call in the first cell of a range, deleted all other cells and it automatically resizes the spreadsheet to meet the need of the filter.

When I use it, I want a record of every message entered into a google form, but I only want ones whose dates are relevant.  With the filter, I set up the separate sheet and it pulls only the data I want displayed and has no empty cells whether there is 1 message or 10.  Then rise pulls from this filtered list.  I keep the raw data to b sure I have a record of every message displayed, who and when it was created, etc.

Just an idea.

I'd be curious about the use cases that need/want empty cells to show, or if it would be possible to just make a check box for show/hide empty cells in the widget settings.

@Biologyben One use case that I need empty cells to show is for displaying a schedule and when there's nothing to do at particular time, the row/cell must be empty.

Feature request:
Would it be possible to incorporate merged cells? Now the data from merged cells is displayed in the first cell. It would be great to see the data spread out / centered over all the merged cells.

Thank you for listening to our feedback!

Will the new widget still have the functionality to create a custom layout as is described in this post: http://blog.risevision.com/developer-...

Taylor,

The new Widget will not have the Custom Layout option. If you need a custom layout, you can contact our Creative team to assist you with that at creative@risevision.com, or you can use the Spreadsheet Component to build whatever you need. You can read all about that here: http://rise-vision.github.io/rise-google-sheet/components/rise-google-sheet/

Thanks!

Every time I open up the Spreadsheet Widget, I have to reassociate it with the spreadsheet I used.
  1. I have to click on by ID, and the ID shows up in the box (but the master sheet is not listed)
  2. I have to click on the textbox of the ID to get the sheet field to populate
  3. I then have to select a master sheet.

I have to do this ever time I open up the spreadsheet widget settings, when I want to make a change

Hey RV - I am also seeing this problem. Also note that instead of clicking the "Select Spreadsheet" button option, I can click "Enter Spreadsheet Key". When I click for the spreadsheet key, the key is stored/cached in my browser. So it appears the data is in in my browser - the widget just needs to remember to execute on that stored key.

Thanks!

Hi RV - at the very end of the widget is the "Per Column Format". I am attempting to use this for a menu - with the first column as a Title that is bolded and in color, and the next three columns are Prices that are unbolded and black. But I am not seeing this response in my Presentation.

Am I using the widget incorrectly, or is there a bug?

Thanks!!

Jeremy,

I did discover a fix for the issue where the Per Column Formatting width was not being respected. The reason was because there were 2 Heading columns.

Once I deleted one of the Heading columns, everything worked as expected, so now my spreadsheet looks like this:

Once we get that issue solved where the Heading formatting is respected when using per column formatting, I think you will be in good shape!

As announced on July 29th, we have finished the new Google Spreadsheet Widget. As of today, the "early preview" label has been removed and the new Spreadsheet Widget has replaced the previous version in the Store.

As for infinite scrolling - unfortunately we did run into technical barriers that jeopardize the reliability of the Widget so we will not be supporting infinite scrolling at this time. With that said, we will continue to review those technical barriers, and once resolved, we will look at adding infinite scrolling as a feature to the Spreadsheet Widget.

Thank you to everyone for the feedback! If you run into any issues please let us know and we'll take care of them.

Thanks!

I decided to test this new Google Sheets Widget and right of the bat ran into some issues. I made a very simple sheet just to test functionality. I filled only first 3 cells A1 thru A3. I am not using headers (disabled). When I leave 'Show entire sheet' - everything is fine. But when I select 'Show range' (starting A1, ending A3) - first, the preview takes significantly longer to load (sure singn of some problem with presentation) and then nothing appears on the screen... nada.

Is this just me; how come nobody noticed or experienced that?

Update. The workaround is to add another column (even empty - A1:B3). But do you think workarounds like that are OK?

Okay, fix is deployed. Unfortunately, the changes required to fix this were complex and won't be backwards compatible. This means you'll have to re-add the Widget to your Playlist to pick up the change.

Check it out and let us know how you make out.

Hey Alan, what does that imply if I have a Google Spreadhseet Widget in a presentation from last week? Do I have to re-create the presentation for it to work? Or only to catch this latest update? Mine was working fine last week, so I don't need this latest fix.

Jeremy, unfortunately, yes you would need to re-add the Widget to pick up these changes. If everything is working as you need it to, you don't need to do anything and the next time you do add the Spreadsheet Widget to a Playlist, you'll get the latest version.

Thanks

Hi there, again, I am back at it. Finally, I tried the widget and it works well... except, see the image. For some reason the text in alternating row is blurred... no matter the color or text size.

Update: I pushed this presentation to a display and the text appears fine there. This is only preview issue.

Update #2: I figured that out. It only happens when I am reducing zoom to 75% in Chrome browser. So, false alarm... weird, though.

I've noticed that in the columns, you're unable to add html tags to header items or individual align the headers with that specific column. I tried a thousand different things including editing the actual html and adding css into the presentation itself. But nothing seemed to work. Like if you set header alignment, it aligns them all and there's no override for individual styling inside of the columns.

Here I go again. I am in process of replacing the old sheets widget with the new one. And here is the problem I ran into. I have one very densely populated directory - vertical layout, two columns and lots of names. I am getting the problem with extremely long names because they would not fully fit within the narrow column... duh. In the old widget the name would just shift to the next line within the same cell and the office # (next column) just center vertically. Also, the spacing would be smaller between the text lines of the same cell, which would help visually separate different names in rather crowded space.

I believe because you replaced ROW PADDING with ROW HEIGHT in the new widget I cannot fit the long names anymore. In order to make them fully visible I need to set ROW HEIGHT really high, which results in ridiculous line spacing between the cells.

I really do not expect Rise Vision going back to the drawing board again. I believe they had their reasons for changing how line spacing gets handled by the new widget. I understand. I just wanted you to know about this weak spot in the widget's design.

Most likely I am gonna have to look up some super condensed font for now and hope for the future improvements.

I can assure I am not using any extensions. Moreover, it is happening across all of the freshly installed browsers on multiple computers in different locations. The only computer that has not been affected is my work PC. I believe it could be some strange account-widget related problem because I get the same behavior on my work PC when I am in incognito mode. Like I mentioned before, I have no problem with the older sheets widget. I am actually thinking to recycle my older presentations with the old widget.

UPDT: i just checked, there is only one Sheets widget available and that is the one I am using. FYI, I have no problem previewing older presentations with the old sheets widget; only the new widget is causing me preview problems.

I really hate doing this to you because you are awesome, but I must to address this problem. Formatting in the new sheets widget is a pain. Although, there is an option to align text with the top of the row (that would totally solve my problem), but it simply ain't working at all (and for some reason it is not available for individual columns). But there is a lot of overhead room that does not get affected by the row height value. Moreover,  the very bottom row gets cut off right at the text line; therefore, all the lowercase p g etc. gets cut off as well. It happens even with placeholder tall enough to accommodate that and then some. I cannot wrap my head around why the text does not get aligned with the top.

We will have to go with this for now, but I am 100% sure that customers will come back at us because of that.

  • 688 Points 500 badge 2x thumb
I've noticed that the top/center/bottom align does not work if I go into the HTML and change the font away from the drop-down menu sizes (30px 36, 48, 60, 72, 96, etc). Vertical align does seem to work if I keep those values.

I have noticed the same things. My solution is to make font size ~20% smaller than row height. A work-around that is semi-annoying.

Thanks guys,
Jeremy

It does get better as the font size increase. I altered the layout and increased the font size to 22px. In this case the length of the list allowed me to do that. Nevertheless, It is a bit of compromise for me, but it works. It would have been much more difficult with a longer list of tenants. Hopefully the awesome guys at RV will address this at some point... or we gonna need to start buying 4K displays LOL

It is me again. It is getting really frustrating as one of the best RV tools simply is ignored. I am asking you to really address some of the issues as soon as you can, please. At this point it is not very useful for more complicated things like menu boards for the following reasons:

- vertical alignment does not work
- copied widget should not lose column settings
- header and body row high formatting MUST be separated
- line-height formatting would be nice to have (IMO not all that important if vertical alignment is fixed)

I do not know if anyone wants to add something else.

How much longer we need to wait; it has been like that for months now?

Alan, that's good, just in time for me. I am gonna give it a try tomorrow and will let you know. Also, I wanna ask you guys to add 'SAVE' button at the top (or floating) of this and other longer widgets. I have tens of widget instances in one presentation and when I need to change something little at the top like refresh time, scrolling all the way down to save the change becomes really annoying experience.

Alan, thank you, it is working as expected. Now, I believe you must expect people posting angry messages in the forum that 'suddenly' copy in their sheets widgets are out of alignment.

I still hope you can find the way to add more control over the line-height for both header and body. As I mentioned before, these must be different in some cases.

Also, I found another bug for you to iron out! There is a problem with right-justified text in columns. For example, there is a placeholder 1000px wide; it is divided in two colums, 900px and 100px wide. The first column has tenant names and they are left-aligned. The second column has suite numbers and these are right-aligned. Even if the text perfectly fits within 100px with some room to spare, it gets cut-off a bit when right-aligned. Take a look at this.

It is not just one presentation, I see this in all of our sheet widgets and I am currently trying to fix them - temporarily re-justifying copy to the left or center. But i hope to see this fixed soon as we need that right-justified text option.

p.s. I think this is something recent because it was not like that just a month or two ago.

Hi, just wanted to learn if you guys had any plans for improving/updating the widget. It is still not very useful when trying to make something that goes beyond one line of simple text.

Not sure if I mentioned before, but absence of line spacing is a problem. Tried to make a 'textbox' for the sheets widget and use 72pt font. It is pretty terrible ))) Is there a way to reduce that gap between lines somehow in the HTML?

Hi Darius,

Thanks for checking in.  No, we don't have any plans for updating the widget as you have outlined in this video.  The widget doesn't support custom layouts.  One option for you would be to clone the widget repo and modify/build your own custom version.

Thank you Ray, but that is rather disappointing...

I suspected you may not be thrilled with the answer, but I didn't want to leave you hanging.

Hi, I am here again )) So, there is something happening with the Sheets Widget or something else in RV that is a bit undesirable. Some time ago while working on a presentation that was 1920x3 in width, I was testing it on a regular 1920 width display. I noticed that all of the sheets widget instances, while off the screen, were not loading. They started uploading data only when I moved them and made them visible on the screen. It was not a big deal for that presentation.

Now, I am working on a multi-page jquery based presentation. I am extensively using the sheets widget in it. And this 'not publishing' behavior became a little problem. Thing is that data is not uploading in sheet widgets within popups until:
A. open a popup
B. browse other presentation pages first

Initially I thought it just needed some time for all the data to get through. But even after hours from the start of playback the popups were still sitting without data, and they would start downloading it as soon as I start opening them (even just one for all of them to start downloading and publishing) or browsing the presentation (opening other pages).

Video to illustrate: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ciauj8e38uepz3x/20170530_085705_1.mp4?dl=0

Now, I understand if you say this is fine and you aren't gonna do anything about it. It certainly does not look like a big deal, and honestly how many people would do anything like that. But, perhaps, you could recommend something to deal with this issue. It looks like that more and more companies will get interested in interactive displays in the near feature.

I tried looking for some JC trick to force data upload for the entire webpage. I was not able to find anything.

Thank you.
