Does Google spreadsheet data get to the screen straight from Google?

Not really sure how to ask..  I have a customer with data from a Google spreadsheet not showing up.  However, it is showing up on a machine at our office.  Does the data come right from Google or does get on the presentation and come to the presentation through Rise?  Does this make sense?  In other words...if Google is blocked with that cause the data on the spreadsheet to not show up?

tony,

It's possible that their network is blocking the incoming data from the Google Spreadsheet. That data is retrieved by our Spreadsheet Widget directly from Google. The best way to determine this would be to open up the developer tools on the machine. If you have the newest version of Rise Player, this can be opened with control + shift + . (that's a period). Click the network tab, and see if you're getting any errors.

Any network errors here would be a giveaway to what is being blocked on their network.

This launch was a disaster for them (other contractors).  It all came together last minute.  I won't have time to get their before they open.  What would need to be the exception on their firewall to ensure Google spreadsheet info gets through?  Would it simply be docs.google.com?

FYI...they were working at all locations and now aren't but show up on our network just fine.

tony,

it's really hard to determine what would need to be whitelisted without seeing the results of the network tab in dev tools.

If they preview the presentation on site, does the data show up?

How do you open dev tools while the presentation is running?

The key combination is control + shift + .
Last key is a period.

This is really perplexing because a very good customer is missing a very important piece from their screen and I don't seem to be able to get an answer from Rise about where data is coming from.  I've been to dev tools and and several of their branch screens and the interesting thing is that the "one" that is working and all the others have the same error...so it means nothing.

Is there anyone at Rise who knows how the info gets on the screen?  It's a little embarrassing to tell our customer IT "we don't know how the data gets there and either does the developer of the software so we can really tell you why it's not showing up"  I have data coming from a Google spreadsheet into a presentation.  That presentation is embedded into another presentation.  It is working outside of the customer network, but in the customer network.  They are following all the firewall exceptions guidelines...unless you have a printed a new one within the last 12 months.  ...have you?  Help here would be greatly appreciated.

So, open dev console and go to the network tab.

In the search filter, enter docs.google.com. You should see request being sent out. See what the response is. See the example here, http://www.screencast.com/t/VrkGUvQu

Good luck!

Could I get an email address to send you info from them?  It's a bit sensitive so I'd like to keep it off the forum.

FYI...followed the steps as outlined.  All is gave me is times.  Looks like it's getting out just fine. Although my dev tools UI looks a little different than the one pictured.  ...roughly the same.

Tony,

If you want to email support@risevision.com with a link to the Presentation and a brief explanation of what you are seeing, we can take a look. Thanks!

Hey Tony,

Looks like you're using the deprecated Spreadsheet Gadget on this presentation. I believe Hannah directed you to use the Spreadsheet Widget. Did this solve your problem?

I have not tried it yet.  I believe we used the widget some time ago and it would not do what we wanted it to do.  I guess my bigger question would be - working inside a network vs outside...it seems if a feature does not work on a particular network and then it does work on a clone of that machine outside that network then the issue shouldn't be does it work or not but does the network administrator need to do to make sure it isn't getting blocked.

Best way to know would be for the network administrator to view a preview link of the presentation on her/his personal computer, then check to see if the data appears there. Open devtools, and see if anything is being blocked in the network tab.

I did open dev tools.  That's why we're stumped.  Nothing appears to be blocked...the data just doesn't populate inside their network and does on the outside.

Can you try the new spreadsheet widget? Just create a blank presentation, nothing but the spreadsheet widget set to retrieve the data you need to display, and assign it to that display. Let us know the results.
