Displays & Schedules Application Preview

Hello Community,

Over the past several months our 3 user experience designers; Adrian, Ghislaine and Mat, have been furiously redesigning the UX for our entire digital signage content management system.

Our goal is to allow a brand new user to setup a display and have WOW content on it in 5 minutes or less. Are we there yet? No way. We completely admit that. But, we are working really hard to make it happen.

To accomplish the goal we are releasing a series of applications, starting first with Displays, followed by Schedules, Editor and finally Alerts. In parallel to these projects there are some amazing things happening with Content, and with our Players - stay tuned for more on those in the weeks to come.

But, back to the applications. Each of our new applications use our public API's to access our servers so they can be used in parallel with the current Rise Vision application. We didn't want to have an abrupt flip of the switch, but rather a gradual introduction soliciting feedback as we go.

And, with this in mind I wanted to let you know that Displays is available for preview and feedback, and Schedules is also up and running as well. Schedules is a bit further behind Displays and has the most development activity right now so please keep this in mind if checking it out.

Any thoughts or suggestions on these two early previews would be most appreciated.

Cheers!
Byron

I like it! The only thing I would add to it is a monthly or weekly uptime/downtime monitor. This would keep up with the hours that the display is up or down. You could even tie this in with the status of the display since its already checking for display status.

The reason for this is say if a place is a few hours away and there not using the display or keeping it on as they should be. Yes you can see the status but how much time is lost is unknown. With this you can calculate time loss and be able to remedy the issue or work ways to fixing it. Plus it can be used in sale pitches to show them that the uptime rate is great. :)

Towards the display i would also like to mention about a minor suggestion, if we can have the headers name, status and last connection fixed like the search panel. Currently if you have a long list of displays, the headers also scroll along.

Another suggestion would be to have it remember how it was last filtered.
It appears to be filtered by last updated every time you load the page.

For the Displays page fir instance I typically want to filter by status and have to do this each time I open the page.

Thanks!

Hi William, good point. I've added a card to the backlog. We are doing one full pass through all apps, currently on Schedules now, moving to Editor and then Alerts and then we will come back to Displays and start all over again. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Prakash,

Schedules is still very much a work in progress so things won't be working, or will be broken in a bit, Displays is further along. Both are early previews at this point.

Thanks for checking them out!

Displays really need some way to show what Schedule they are attached to. It's very difficult to locate what Schedule is playing on which of my boxes right now, and that's only a handful of test devices.

On that regard, my dream about the user interface would be to have a calendar view like on Google Calendar where events are linked to a presentation page and, even best, when you drag the mouse over the calendar event, you get an image caption of the page rendering ;-)

Completely agreed Wendi, it's in the backlog, down a ways, but in there. Thanks!

Good idea Wendi, some flow control, so we not have to click to see......

Is there a way to add online/offline timestamp in displays tab. Just to be able to see when the status was catched.

Just found it inside display menu.. ;-) Should it be in the upper menu ?

I made a preview to internal customers from communication and it was positive. The new design is seen more dynamic and end-user oriented (as I was told very often, the older user interface was created by IT for IT ;-)
Few issues :
  1. When browsing/navigating across sub-companies and activating the new interface for Schedules and Displas, we are redirected always to the root company forcing us to reselect the sub-company. After, it is OK.
I guess it is more linked to the difficulty to merge both user interfaces temporarily
  2. Previously (last week I guess), it was not possible to modify the timeline but I see it is fixed now.
As already suggested as improvement :
  1.  Allow to set a page in a schedule as 'Enable' - 'Disable';
Disable means the page is not shown till it is enabled back. Very useful to disable temporarily a presentation without changing the schedule that might be a bit complex to recreate.
  2. Allow the schedule preview to match (1) the current time and thus showing only pages (and placeholders) matching the planned scheduled and ideally (2) allow to run a schedule based on a given specified date (for instance, show me the content as on Sept 2nd at 14:00 to be sure the right presentation will be shown).
  3. As I mentioned in the thread (reply to Wendi), there would be a major improvement by showing the presentation page in a calendar view like on Google calendar.
This is one of the 2 main weak point my internal users are reporting. The 2 points :
    (1) Hard to have a global view over time about the planned presentations. A calendar view would be great.
    (2) very painful today to be obliged to calculate manually the full length of a presentation holding several videos and images.  There should be the possibility to specify the duration of a page in a schedule as 'Till Page ends'.
THanks

Hello Community,

I’d like to update those of you using the beta version of the schedules app (http://schedules.risevision.com/). We discovered a bug today and are currently working to fix it.

The bug occurs when you have four presentations scheduled, of those four two presentations are set to run only in a certain timeframe (10:00PM - 10:15PM Daily) and the other two presentations are set to run always. This results in all four presentations running regardless of the time.

Here is an example of when this bug occurs.

Presentations
A, B, C, D

Durations
A - 10 seconds
B - 10 seconds
C - 300 seconds
D - 300 seconds

Timeline
A - always
B - always
C - 8:25AM to 8:30AM
D - 8:30AM to 8:35AM

Result
Presentations ignore timeline and run in the sequence A,B,C,D regardless of time.

You can track the bug here https://github.com/Rise-Vision/schedules-app/issues/45

If you have any questions please add them in the comments.

Thanks,
Shea

Update:

We have figured out what the issue is and are working to resolve it quickly. In the meantime, the workaround is to un-check the every day field in the Schedules App timeline dialog.

Thanks!
