Content Deprecation

To maintain the quality of our core content it is important that we eliminate redundant and low usage products to make sure that we focus our efforts to build the best products we can.

With this in mind we will be deprecating the HTML Item, Image Item, URL Gadget, Vimeo Gadget and Photo Album and if you are currently using them we suggest you use the HTML Widget, Image Widget/ Image Folder Widget, Web Page Widget, Vimeo HTML5 Widget or Photo Feed Widget, respectfully.

And unfortunately we have too little usage of the Flash Gadget, Foursquare Gadget, Nearby Gadget and Bulletin to justify further development of these products.

As always, all of the above discontinued products are available as open source and if any member of the community wants to take them and create their own versions as widgets please feel free to do so.

These deprecated gadgets will be removed from our content listing in our existing editor (https://rva.risevision.com) by November 30, 2015 but you can continue to edit them within your existing Presentations as needed.

Our new editor, which is currently available for early preview here https://editor.risevision.com, does not support content items or gadgets, only widgets, and these items will not be able to be used with it.

Thank you!

Hi Alan,
What becomes of the conversion process between presentations using these depreciated items in the placeholders and the new editor? In the early preview, I see there is an "Open with Previous Editor" option.
Thank you,
Joe Kirchner

Hi Alan, Yes...by conversion process, I mean, how long will this be available before only the new Editor is the only option? So to say, What is the an End of Life for the Previous Editor?

Also, just to clarify...this change is only effecting the Editor, the player should function properly even with older Gadget content? Or is that also what's being removed from your servers? If removal of how the content should operate is effected on Nov 30th, Can I take the old Web Page Gadget XML file, and host that XML file on my server, and continue to function as I do today?

Thanks for your help,
Joe Kirchner

We have not set an end of life date for the previous Editor, but will post an announcement once that has been figured out. We'll need at least a couple months to finalize the strategy.

You are correct, this only impacts Editor. We are not removing the gadgets from the current servers they are hosted on. I would recommend migrating to Widgets, which is what we will support, but you are more than welcome to take the source code and host wherever you'd like.

Thanks!

Gartree,

If you  have access to Adobe Media Encoder it is a great and easy to use tool for all kind of media conversions.

Hi!

We encountered  some problems with our presentation but when we switched from the Image and Video widget to the old Image and Video item everything works as it should.

We contacted the support team but no one seemed to be able to solve the problem

Thanks RV News! I ran "Test Metropolen" on our Linux Player, Windows Player and Chrome Player. All content showed up for me, but we recently identified an use case with Chrome Player where if there is not enough space to save the file to disk we show the same message. That details of what we discovered is in the conversation here if you are interested.

We have work in our backlog to resolve this and show the correct message, but I'm wondering if this is also what is causing the problem you are seeing.

I see you are using Windows for both of your Displays. As a test, would you mind installing our Windows Player and running your Presentation on it and let me know if you see the same thing?

Hi there!

Yes we are using Windows. The player got plenty of space, ram  and power (Intel NUC 5i3YH 120GB SSD/8GB RAM)

I ran some tests with your Windows player 5-6 weeks ago and experienced the same result but will give it another try :)

Thanks! Please let me know how it goes. If you get the same result it could be another situation we are unaware of in which case I'd love to get remote access to that machine to see what is going on. If that is okay with you I can walk you through the process. It is very simple.

Let me know how it goes.

Do not remove Image Item plz :) Simply because it is so much easier and quicker this way then going to the store and looking for a widget.

BTW, just looked,  awesome new editor, though! Thumbs up on that.

To compliment Darius's main question, can Rise Vision allow a default option for Ordering of Playlist Content Items. This way, if I use Web Page Widget the most, it will be in the top row.

I too share the long conversion hours, I plan on creating a few test presentations and reviewing for some time, before I begin making my conversions.

The original point of our college getting digital signage at all, and still the most important to our staff and students, is viewing the slideshow of each campuses' recent news, events, registration times, etc ...

So we use the Photo Album as the 'anchor' of our entire signage effort, spread out over 4 campuses and 30 signage displays.

Please do not deprecate the photo album widget. It's what allows us to use Picasa public folders to feed our different campus slideshows. And using Picasa lets our individual 'slideshow managers' at each campus tie their Picasa folders into their Google account. This then allows each different campus slideshow manager to update their own campus' photo album slideshows themselves, and the changes automatically show up on their digital signage TV.  They LOVE this.

Instead, if we have to use the image folder widget, they'll lose that control over their slideshows that enabled our signage to be desirable by the departments to begin with.

This photo album widget is truly the center we build our signage presentations around.  If the photo album is deprecated, and there are no plans for a replacement widget that doesn't cost per display, our community college system will more than likely have to leave Rise Vision. I figured this ending would come eventually, as these widgets couldn't be at 'no cost' forever if your company wants to make a profit.

Thanks for all your help during this past year. With that assistance, I've learned enough about digital signage software and media players that I'm much better prepared to evaluate the digital signage companies we may be evaluating soon.

Unfortunately, we simply do not have the capacity to maintain our core content in addition to the redundant and low usage content.

I'm not sure I follow why the Image Folder wouldn't work for you though. Couldn't you just create one Folder per campus and have your "slideshow managers" add and remove images from their respective folders as needed?
Photo of rcruse

  • 3,268 Points 3k badge 2x thumb
Can we duplicate this required workflow with RV storage? Is it possible to have separate usernames and passwords setup for each campus slideshow folder on the RV storage, so that the slideshow managers can only view/edit their own campus slideshow folder?

If we're able to move the slideshow managers over to RV storage folders instead of the Picasa folders, there could be lots of images. What are the current storage limits for our basic RV storage plan? And what would be the cost for exceeding those limits per month?

Thanks,
Robert

If the Folders need to be separate by User, I would recommend creating a new Company in Rise Vision per campus. You can make all these Companies a sub-Company under yours so that you can access them if needed.

For each Company, add the 'slideshow managers' as Users, then create a folder in their respective Rise Storage accounts  Take the URL for that Folder and put that in the URL field for the Video Folder Widget into your Presentation.

Your campus Users could then login to https://storage.risevision.com and simply remove and add images as needed.

The caveat here is that you would need one Storage subscription per campus. If you can manage to do this from one Storage account you would need just one subscription / one Rise Vision Company.

Each Storage subscription comes with unlimited storage.

Thanks

Hello,

Video item was removed a few weeks ago and finally, it was decided to get it back. The reason was that the Video gadget does not cache the video stored on an external repository. Video gadget 'just' stream the video without caching it. So, the footprint on the network is very large.

Was the caching issue fixed with the video gadget? THis is highly important for us to get support for caching and external video.

Like i previously said all my powerpoints are exported as mp4 as you cant directly import powerpoints. So now after i have exported i have to convert the video again which makes the process even longer in getting new content on the screens.

I chose Rise digital signage as it was easy to use and updating the screens was fast but this is going to take up more of my time. Is it possible to have an mp4 widget or just keep the video item which works?

Thanks

I see. So we can't duplicate our current workflow without having to throw out that current workflow and start over, again, with a new, much more complicated workflow.

Having to redo our entire college's structure just to have password protected folders seems very overkill.

Occam's razor paraphrase: 'The simplest explanation is usually the right one.' I would argue that this aphorism also applies to solutions.
Photo of Alan Clayton

Alan Clayton, Official Rep

  • 8,788 Points 5k badge 2x thumb
I must be making this sound more complicated that it really is. Sorry about that! Let me try and clarify.

First, the requirement.

The College has several campuses. Each campus has a Slideshow Manager responsible for adding and removing images on the campus digital signage for the campus they belong to.

Slideshow Managers must not be able to access images that belong to another campus.

We can easily satisfy this by doing the following for each Campus.
  1. From the Company you belong to, create a sub Company
  2. From the newly created sub Company, add the Slideshow Manager as a User
  3. Navigate to the sub Companies Storage Account
  4. Create a Folder and get the public link to it.
  5. Edit your existing Presentation by replacing the Photo Album Gadget with the Image Folder Widget for the respective campus.
  6. Paste the URL from step 4 into the Image Folder Settings.
  7. Have your Slideshow Manager upload and remove images as necessary from the Folder created in Step 4.
That is it. Your Presentations will automatically update as the Slideshow Manager adds and/or removes images from that folder. And there is the added benefit that because you belong to the parent company, you can switch between the Storage accounts for your sub Companies anytime.
Photo of Biologyben

Biologyben

  • 3,558 Points 3k badge 2x thumb
But for every new sub-company you have to pay $120 per year - Best case scenario, this is $480 more than prior solution for no added benefit.  Likely, each department at each location has their own display groups and images they want to show.  If each of his departments had 2 displays, thats 15 sub-companies and nearly $2,000 of added costs.

Further, complications come from people no longer automatically being able to add images into a web album directly from devices (especially phones) without needing to access and update via PC.  Further, all those random users who have never before needed to log into Rise just to save a picture now have to learn an entirely new system.

Surely you all understand this is not 'just as easy' as the old way.

I myself will be looking forward to a non-Rise-storage based solution that can pull images from websources.

Biologyben,

I think you have a point, but apparently you are going to need a solution here. I believe the best way for you would be building something outside RV and then pulling the content to your presentation through Web Page or Custom HTML widgets. I was thinking you could build a webpage with a picture slider showing pictures from your online storage (not RV). I have used WOW Slider in our company's default presentation http://preview.risevision.com/Viewer....

In the presentation I have Custom HTML pulling basic webpage I have built with that slider in it. And the slider is playing images from a folder in our RV storage, but it can be located anywhere. You could do something like that:
- create separate folders for separate locations in your online storage
- set access restrictions, so they could be opened by certain people only
- create a webpage with slider for each specific location pulling images from their specific folder
- make presentations for each location (copy) and embed their specific webpage with Web Page or Custom HTML widgets.

I know, sound like not so elegant solution and a lot of work. I agree. Another down side is that there would be no way adding new images without re-writing code in the webpage with slider. But you could without any problem replace images as long as you kept the same names. And no preview images of course, unless you would replace them too. I am not really prompting you to choose this way. I am simply trying to give you some ideas for a workaround for this problem. I believe you can come up with even better solution, and I would like to learn it too.

In case you interested in WoW Slider: http://wowslider.com
It is free with their tiny logo in the corner, but you can eliminate that by buying the application. has many customization options. Really cool thing.

Biologyben, of course I understand where you are coming from and I'm not implying this is "just as easy". It is a change to how you do things today. I get it, but I hope you understand our position. The only way we can focus on the quality of our core content is by deprecating the low usage and duplicate content.

To help me better understand your position with the deprecation of the Photo Album Gadget, is the primary issue the lost functionality and ease of management or the cost of the alternative solutions?

Thanks!

  • 3,268 Points 3k badge 2x thumb
Both of these issues are troublesome.
Firstly, this 'lost functionality' and ease of management for each separate campus slideshow is exactly how we convinced the faculty to 'buy in' to our digital signage project in the first place.
As we've discussed above, this workflow really can't be replicated after deprecation of the photo album without much work by us,  and at additional cost for basically what we already have now. We really need the ability to access password protected storage for images and video that isn't RV based, so we can continue with this faculty requested separation of  campus management.
Secondly, our department usually doesn't allow ongoing 'soft purchases' like monthly recurring software services. And my boss has already expressed much reluctance when I describe the "$X per display per month" cost model. I'm still surprised they sprung for RV storage for the content I myself manage.

After playing a bit with the new editor I came to conclusion that it badly needs an easier option for ordering placeholders. What really is odd, you have already implemented this for ordering playlist items within placeholders (tiny little up/down arrows)... What really could be cool is drag & drop function. I understand you are all tech savvy people in RV, but on this side of the monitor we have people who do not know what Z Ordering is and how exactly it works ;) Other than that I got to say I love that new editor.

I am taking my words back. I am not sure what Aland had in mind by saying "Image Widget." The only image thing I can find in the store is Cenique image gadget, but it does not work in both editors at all (configuration does not respond/open in the new editor, and in the old editor I get error message). Without Image Widget I do not even can re-do my older presentations. Also Image Folder Widget configuration was not responding to me in the new editor. What I noticed, RV Image Widget is available in the old editor, but not in the new?

UPADTE 1: I am just gonna keep updating as I go... Weird thing! I do not see RV Image Widget in the store pop-up window (the last is Web Page Widget), but it appeared as an option after I ran the search. I am able to use it. Again, all this in the new editor.

UPDATE 2: Wait! What? I just learned that transition effects for playlist items are gone?... Why?... These were basic, but they worked.

The reason the Cenqiue Image Gadget doesn't work with the new Editor is because it is a Gadget. Not sure why you aren't getting a warning though. I'll log an issue so it can be looked at.

Hi Alan,

All of our presentations are about 99% images with transition effects. No gadgets for news, weather, or anything else.

Using many overlays and well timed images let's us achieve the same results as big company's like McD's, TimHortons, BurgerKing, etc.

Now we will have to redo everything!?

I am relieved that our company made the business decision to keep most of our clients on another system as this would have been devastating. We have been evaluating Rise for the past two years and waiting for the platform to mature in regard to mass use, features we require and certain functionality.

  • This new editor adds a ton of work to make complex presentations.
  • The viewable area to work in is way to small now. Almost impossible to work that way - full screen option until I work on a setting (then the side bar is back)?
  • The loss of the right click functionality is a huge disappointment. (another huge slowdown for quick edits)
  • Very annoying to have to scroll through all the gadgets in thumbnail form...just to add a simple image!
  • Where are the transitions?

Personally I'm disappointed, I think it is a step backward.

Yes, more user friendly for the mass client base, but the power users will suffer.

I applaud Rise for trying to improve the items that are used, as there have been many setbacks over the past year with problems seen in the forum. So I agree with having stable offerings.

I would like to see Rise commit to a vision that once something new is implemented, that it will be supported/upheld in the future regardless of client use. (otherwise it perhaps should have never been - perhaps offer new items as beta for 3-6 months with risk of loss?).

There should also be consideration for smooth transition of all the current client code - perhaps a tool?

I also hope the transitions are just delayed in the new editor. (could not find them!?). Simple as it may seem, we would not be able to use Rise with any clients if they were removed. "Transitions make the world go round!"

Thanks for listening.

This:"Transitions make the world go round!" Although, currently they are missing transitions in the new editor's beta version, I believe they will come back at some point in the future... right RV? I fully agree on 'right click' functionality absence... it is just so natural now across different applications. Yet, I cannot agree with viewable area problem mentioned. With all the widgets you cannot see there much anyways. There is 'prieview' option available. What I do, I take preview tab and drag it to my 2nd monitor, set it to full screen and zoom out till it fits in the viewport. Later it is just clicking 'refresh' icon for updates. Not so elegant, but it works just fine, and in these days, with these computers, everyone must have at least 2 monitors connected to a single video card.

Hey Darius,

I always have the preview tab open and zoom to fit the entire screen as most of our presentations are 1920x1080. Part of the problem is that I work with a small laptop.

It was very nice to click on the placeholder and work in the same space (and place on the screen) not having to go back and forth.

But most annoying is having to browse the store to add an image. Like you, I used to bring up the dialog box and paste my image url - took 2 seconds to add an image. With the new editor, by the time I choose the image box I've almost forgot what I was looking for in the first place. Disappointing.

Anyway, it does not look like it will be easy to make presentations after November.

Cheers!

Not sure if I am doing something wrong or what, but no matter what kind of content I try to add I cannot get anything to display. Knowing that the HTML Item will be deprecated I wanted to try and get ahead of the end of life for it as we use the HTML Item in a huge way to do our digital signage. However when I can't get anything to display in the new Editor it is rather discouraging.

This currently has 4 place holders holding the following:
  • image widget referencing storage image
  • image widget referencing a weblink
  • html widget holding a h1 and p with a short amount of text on each for testing
  • twitter widget
When viewing in both Chrome and IE I just get the background color.

Kristen,
Seems to be an interoperability issue when moving from the beta Editor to RVA for these items like when you copy the HTML code generated in Editor back to RVA.  When building these content items (ie HTML, Image Widgets) directly on RVA there is no issue.  We're looking into this now.

This might be a really daft question, as I'm looking to refresh one of our presentations so decided to look to use the new editor and remove widgets.

Something really simple like having the current date on the display is now not possible, as the world clock widget doesn't support date whereas the clock gadget does?

Hi Matt, you are absolutely correct. We'll be creating a Clock Widget compatible with our new Editor soon. Until then feel free to continue using the Clock Gadget and the previous Editor (https://rva.risevision.com) to manage it.

Thanks!

What about the "Presentation Item" used to embed presentations? We use it quite a bit in our workflow here. Is it in the new editor somewhere, or will it be added?

I have tried that once... putting 3 different presentations inside 1. Two of them did not work. RV promised to look at this, but I never heard from them if they were able to find the root of this problem or not.

Hey Blake,

I see they may be stressful to browsers, that makes sense. I've never seen anyone say not to use them..

We have been using them for Test Sites fairly extensively.. that way I don't have to change Display IDs all the time to view what a display would look like actively running. Since Preview does not adhere to schedules, and our presentations are located in sub-companies, this is the method we came up with after reading in the forums. Any suggestions how to replace that?

We have also been using them for fluidity of presentations with multiple widgets. For instance.. I want a text scroller to remain for the duration of the viewing. Meanwhile, I've got two other placeholders up top, one showing our custom widget, the other showing an image. I want full-screen image to cover those two placeholders every so often. So, we have a main Presentation that houses the text scroller at the bottom. The upper portion of the screen has a playlist of presentations. The presentation is sometimes our custom widget and an image, and sometimes just a single large image for the same area.
How could I achieve this same setup without embedded presentations? The closest idea we've thought of is a blank image when the full-screen ad is not playing. We don't like that idea, as we'd like to keep the ability open to become interactive.
Would be glad to forward you a presentation if you want to have a look.

That's my input for those.. if you have suggestions for either of the problems that creates for me, I'd be thankful :)

Darius,

I've never really had a problem with the embedded presentations doing their job.. my biggest problem is that sometimes I wouldn't Publish the embedded presentation.. the embedded presentations need to be Published for the main presentation to see them correctly. Otherwise, not sure what your problem may have been. RV has always been pretty responsive to my issues. :)

Wendi,

Believe me, I know I need to publish them first ;) Thing is that all 3 presentations work just fine separately, but when I put them together within one single presentation, 2 out of 3 do not show.. I get white area where the presentation must be playing. Oh, I agree, RV people are quite helpful, but sometimes when some odd problems pop up, they sort of push them away. I understand, they have more than enough on their plate at this time. Myself too, I am to busy to look for that post now.Maybe it was addressed and fixed, I do not know. The issue is not really that important to me at this time, but I will check the presentation again later just to make sure if there were any changes or not.

It is a flexible way to work and as AdGators says 'They provide a more presentation design ability'.

Example:

Main Presentation

- 10 images full screen /10sec per image
- 'Sub' presentattion full screen - Weather widget with background image
- 10 images full screen /10sec per image
- Sub presentation full screen - RSS feed with overlay, full screen background image and text scroller
- 10 images full screen /10sec per image
- 'Sub' presentation - 6 images slide and 6 text scroll widgets from left and right + colored banner with two text widgets at the bottom, (different timings)
- Video
- 10 images full screen /10sec per image
etc

However, in this case it might be possible to accomplish the same result using the schedule...?
