Was there a player release this evening? Over half of my network is currently showing "Down" again. My guess is it is in regards to the release of an update? I dont know why these devices will not power back up when something is pushed to them... mix of Asus and dell Chromeboxes, non-managed set up in kiosk mode. Blake seems to be the same type of issue i had last time i posted on here, Ill be on location tomorrow and can give further details. Frustrated

Mylife614,

Yes, there was a update on Sunday evening. We are not seeing any issues with our Managed Chromeboxes on our testing/uptime wall. Can you let us know what you find with your devices?

Same problem here. We have Asus Chromeboxes, non-managed, in kiosk-mode. All of them were off this morning. We would really like to avoid this in the future. What would be the best solution? Prevent auto-updating? Make all boxes managed?

Darius,

Yes, we recommend (and support) Chromeboxes that are in managed, kiosk mode.

Thank you Justin, but I am confused here. What is that "license?" is this something I need to get for each device or is it this: https://www.google.com/intl/en_us/chrome/business/devices/features-management-console.html , a licensed console to managed official chrome devices? I just do not what to start buying stuff before I am 100% positive what is it there that I need.

for myself it will cost several thousand I believe to enroll my current devices into Console management. Any idea if there is price break points etc? I know if you are an "educational" institute its like a 1/3 of the cost... Since the chromeboxe platform seems to be gaining significant traction within Rise, is there an opportunity to align a discounted price point as a "Group" ?

To update, All of my devices that were "down" yesterday were in "Sleep Mode" with a blinking power light when they were down they were showing rise app:1.24.36, I restarted them at each location, once they restarted they were showing Rise App: 1.25.2695 and were running signage as they should for duration of the evening.....

Now I logged into my email this am to find that half my network was back "DOWN"! Was there "ANother" update pushed this am around the 8;15 am hr?
If so several of my PCs seemed to have accepted the update as they are showing: RisePlayerPackagedApp 1.25.2850

My question is regardless of Being enrolled in the Console management, the devices should not be failing to reboot after an update correct? Does anyone know if there is a setting that could be off that is not allow a portion of my devices to reboot after an update?

I have had this happen before both with RIse Updates and Chrome OS Updates.....

Seems as though the Console managements main asset is within the initial "set up" stage of a device. I would figure that these devices should operate as intended set up in basic Kiosk unmanaged without being enrolled in regards to something as basic as a Update being pushed ...

This is happening with both ASUS and DELL chromeboxes, but what is odd is Several of my ASUS models have accepted the updates as intended.....

I dont get it, and I am hesitant to spend thousands of COnsole management to find out it does not solve the issue.

Feel free to contact me via private email, I would love to be able to "talk" with someone if possible via a call as well to figure this out....

The current version of Rise Player is: 1.25.2850.

Can you update the player on your displays and see if your problems persist?

Surau,

http://www.howtogeek.com/64525/how-to-manually-force-google-chrome-to-update-extensions/

The link above shows how to update extensions. If this does not work, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling Rise Player. The latest version is 1.25.2850.

Thanks,

Justin

After uninstalling and reinstalling the extension, it updated to the latest version and it is running fine now. Thanks a lot. I am  monitoring for stability and I will revert if there are issues.

All my chromeboxes went down since the Sunday update. Two of them are stuck on "waiting for application window" and never ever start up. I've rebooted a few of them, but they're crashing on a regular basis again.

Engineered Glass IT,

Can you ensure they're on the latest version of the Rise Player app? The version is 1.25.2850. You may need to uninstall and reinstall if they're not updating on their own.

Justin said: "You pay for Google's console management 'by device' meaning that each device will need to be licensed, and can then be enrolled and controlled from your management console. "

It is not accurate. We paid once $150 for a permanent management console license and we were able to enroll 2 devices so far. They both are showing with 2 different ID numbers and everything works as configured for 2 different players. Or is there something I am missing? This simple issues was confusing as... u know what.

Darius,

I believe each device registered does require a license.

As a followup to this thread, we have seen the issues that our community is experiencing with Chromeboxes, we feel your pain, we're sorry, and we're working to make things better as quickly as we can.

We are currently in a QA phase for our new Rise Windows Player and Rise Linux 32 Player. We are looking at those players being our flagship players moving forward. Development is continuing with the Rise Player Chrome Application as well. We are going all out on adding additional logging to the Rise Player Chrome App to get the issues that we find sorted out.

Thanks for sticking with us in this transitional time.

Hello to all,  seeing posts like the one from Darius Aleksas or like the one from Wendi Borden https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/chrome-device-management-administration  (I didn ́t knew how to add Wendi to this post) I,am in some way in  the same situation, I mean , in my case I,am a little bit confused about the "Chrome Management Console" thing.

Taking into account that RV states that only supports managed devices (not meaning that non managed doesn`t works)  I think it would be great  to have a kind of webinar from RV or even from some one from Google to clarify all these doubts.  So far this is what I understand around, but of corse I may be wrong.

1.- One of the reason the Management Console is needed, is to avoid crashes or at least is intended to, or what exactly are the benefits to work with it? beside using only the features RV console offers.

2.- The need of the Google Management Console have some implications as I could dig from some google web pages information,
-first it has a cost per device https://shop.promevo.com/index.php/catalogsearch/result/index/?cat=31&q=management+console
- If you want to buy a license you must have already a domain settled up with google, that is, you can not purchase a license using a generic gmail account (in the link above you can find a button "SET GOOGLE INFO" that states that .
- So to have your domain with google it implies a monthly payment per account https://www.google.com/intx/en/work/apps/business/pricing.html#/choose-a-plan
- so now, a question: if  I want to deploy 100 displays with managed devices, does this means that I need to set first a 100 gmail accounts (meaning under my domain)  and so implies to pay a monthly fee for each user? even  when I,am going to have these 100 displays just as kiosks mode? or as I read some where, can I buy the management licenses using my only one  domain account, but apply the licenses to a 100 device that are logged with 100 different  generic accounts? In general terms, what would be the easiest way to accomplish it.

Also I think that if a Google Management Console is needed, this must be a product you can buy directly from the RV Store.

Well, I really appreciate your comments.( As usual need to recognize  RV people always  are eager to help)
Regards!

Hi Luis,

For the Chrome Management Console you only need to have one domain that you put all 100 licenses under.

The advantage of having managed devices is that they auto restart if the Chromebox fails.

We have seen stability issues with Chromeboxes that are both managed and unmanaged. And for this reason we are releasing new version of our Windows and Linux native players in the coming weeks. If you want more options to evaluate.

Let me know if that answers your questions.

Thanks,
Shea

Thanks Shea,  it really helped me your answer.
Two more questions.
Following the same scenario for deploy 100 displays, does each chromebox device must be logged with a different gmail account or I can use the  same domain account (the one that handles the 100 licenses) for all the 100 devices?

And , is there any guide of how to set the management console in order to work with RV, I mean which options should be turned on or checkmarked?
Thanks again!!

Hi Luis, you can use one google account to setup all 100 displays, or multiples, up to you, and the only guide we have on chrome setup is this one https://help.risevision.com/user/advanced/display/configure-kiosk-mode?cid=f114ad26-949d-44b4-87e9-8... Hopefully that helps. Thanks!

Luis, to clarify what you had accurately found in your #2 above, if you decide to use the Chrome Management Console, it is not sold directly by Google.  It is only sold through qualified Google Chrome Management Resellers.  There are two ways to buy the license.  A recurring $50 per year per device or a one time perpetual license that is $150 per device.  The purpose for the Chrome Management License is for device management.
