=====================================================================================================================================================

Our office has two unmanaged Asus chromeboxes running the Rise Vision Player in kiosk mode. For months these two machines worked flawlessly however in the past few weeks we have begun seeing crashes of the app and the dreaded sad face of death. What I am wondering is if anyone knows if there is a way to simply have the machines reboot automatically when the app crashes, or the app reboot automatically when it crashes, as currently they simply power down when this happens. Because they are unmanaged that means I need to walk to their physical location and press the power button for them to resume functioning. They will run for hours at a time between crashes and work perfectly again once I reboot the machines but it is a big hassle and I have to constantly check if they are running. If I am lucky enough to catch the sad face screen I can reboot the player from the risevision console however if I don't catch it in time it powers the whole box down. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Joseph,

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is any way to automatically reboot a ChromeOS device in the event of a Chrome crash.

Can you tell me what kind of content you're running on the device? What version of Chrome is it using?

The boxes are using Chrome 49.0.2623.111 with Viewer Version 1-06-201604011732. We are basically using a variety of presentations which cycle through images and one presentation which has twitter running. The crash happens on the box with the twitter plugin and the box which only has the image displaying presentations. We do have a presentation which scrolls though about 40 images which runs for about 8 minutes but it will run fine for hours before crashing and I haven't been able to find any common factor or reason as to why they crash. One of the boxes I recently wiped to defaults and reinstalled, it is running RisePlayerPackagedApp 15.11.20.7944, while the other box is still running RisePlayerPackagedApp 15.10.7.9312.

Since this is April 1, I was going to suggest a RaspberryPi to monitor the display and then have a servo push the restart button.  Good luck finding a real solution.

Joseph,

I can't stress strongly enough the important of having Chrome devices under management if you're going to use them for digital signage. Similarly, and as part of that, you'll have the option to hold your devices at a known-good version of CrOS. That how we use ours. We're parked at v47. Google makes a great product in CrOS but also isn't afraid to break it without notice while doing updates.

That said, there's two versions of the Chrome App Player, you'll want to be sure you use the correct one. It's this one: Rise Player Application

Thanks for the input Robert!

Joseph, what did you mean by Twitter plugin? It may be worth testing without it, or using another embed source for tweets. Please note that we no longer have the Twitter gadget in the Store.

I mean the Twitter Gadget. I know you no longer have it in the store but it kept functioning for us so I never removed it.

Update: I removed the presentation that contained roughly 70 pictures that it was shuffling through and the crashing stopped.

Thanks. I am wondering if it may be cache on the Chrome OS. You can try clearing it to see if the issue comes up again. Another note is that we haven't made further updates to the Rise Chrome App Player - see item in bold under Chrome OS Installation here.
