Hello there, we have been getting pop ups in the upper right corner of our display screens talking about updating chrome. is there a way for these to disappear and for the update to happen manually? We have the Intel NUC (i5) - Windows. they happen about once a week and it's getting too much to go to each location and do the update just to get rid of the pop-up

UGA Food Services,

The best way to deal with this would be to re-download and install the Rise Player on your Display. You can redownload Rise Player at https://help.risevision.com/user/create-a-display

Hi UGA,

As discussed this happens when there is an error in Chrome actually updating to the newer version.   Most of the time, pressing the Chrome pop up update works but in some cases the browser does not update.  For example, 17 displays will have this pop up, but 4 does not update even if you press Update Chrome.

1. Go to the media player containing the pop up.
2. Search for RVPlayer folder in Windows Explorer. File path most likely C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\RVPlayer
3. Go to the chromium folder
4. In this folder you will see what version of Chrome is attached.

When you download the new Chrome version you will need to locate the new Chrome files.
1. Navigate to the folder containing the new Chrome files.
2. I copy the folder containing the new version details (i.e. should say something like “46.0.2490.80” or stable release), the chrome application itself, debug file, wow_helper file
3. I paste them over the files in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\RVPlayer\chromium folder

Edit: I haven't done the redownload Rise Player part that Blake posted - but if that works, that is definitely more straight forward!

Is there a way to disable the pop-up from appearing on the screen at all?

The pop up window will either give the option of Reinstall Chrome or Later

UGA,

Not at this time. It's a known issue and we're looking to resolve it, however the fix at the moment is to install the newest version of Rise Player.

Thanks!

I have problems with Blake's solution. The new version of the player downloads and installs, works fine. But the next morning, after the planned reboot the installer starts over.
I have removed the new player setup, and reinstalled the old one, but now the popups come again.

Pressing the "install update" button in the right corner doesn't work either.

This is how new installer works. It is normal to see "installation" process again at the start.

OK wait... I am reading the solution options above and cannot understand is it RV issue or Chrome issue? Which one is it I need to go after?

Like I said, this is how the new RV App is supposed to work now. It may look unusual, but I, personally do not care that much as far as it brings more stability to the system. make your players restart at night when you cannot see )))

Rob, Just to confirm, you don't have to interact with the installer when it restarts, right? Basically what is happening is it is looking for any new elements to the Installer itself, Player, Cache, or Chrome version, and if one is found, it is downloading and installing them. There shouldn't be any user interaction though.

Thanks!

I believe it gives a popup to react, but i haven't waited a while to see what happens. If it continues like you say, to check some stuff and continue, there is indeed no problem. It only takes a few minutes more to start the player.
If the player however should reboot during the day (power outage e.g.), there is also the delay.
Other question: if you shut down the RV player software (ctrl-w), how can you start it manually like with the previous version?

I have a Modecom player at home, will try it out with the new version and let it reboot without interaction to check out. Keep you posted.

Tnx

Leave it alone, it will start automatically. Or you can simply restart the device; I do that.

Hi Rob,
"If you shut down the RV player software (ctrl-w), how can you start it manually like with the previous version?" To confirm, did you mean restarting the latest version that is out now on the Create A Display page? In the Windows Start menu option or in the Unity search bar you can search for 'Restart Rise Vision' and that will restart the Player. Keep a note though that by selecting Ctrl+W, it does not fully stop the Rise Vision Player. Doing a search for 'Stop Rise Vision Player' will certainly stop it.

Hey guys,

We're aware of this issue and our development team is actively pursuing a solution. We will be in the process of QAing a player change today.

Darius,

We plan to release the fix for this today, but it will be a staggered deployment, so you may not get it right away. We will be updating everyone when it is 100% out there.

Thanks!

Darius, sorry about that! I was assuming you could read my mind of course :)

We are indeed going to be rolling out the new version of Chrome for the older installers that are run using the rvplayer-installer.sh or exe installation file.

Thanks!

Robb, is not it already out? I have one player with the newer installer. I put that one on our Windows 10 player just last week. Now, back to the old one, basically you are telling me that I need to get rid of the old RV App and install the new one, right? Which is not a problem, I just wan to know what to do in this situation; I do not wan to be waiting for nothing.

Darius,

I started typing out this whole long explanation, but to give you a short answer, yes, you're right. I would recommend removing the older installation (deleting the rvplayer folder), and reinstalling the entire Player from the new installer you can download at our Create a Display page.

Keep in mind that even though you install from the newest installer, it may not have the newest version of Chrome. This is because we are rolling out the new version of Chrome in a staggered release, where only some Displays will get it, and then more and more and more. We aim to have everyone on the new version by next week.

Thanks!

Bart, 2 days ago I re-installed both RV app and Chrome. Yesterday I noticed that pop-up on the same machine (the fix for that does not come with the RV installer). I restarted it at the end of the day and left. The machine also restarted at night as scheduled. The pop-up is not here today. Make sure you have the newest RV app installed (the old will not get the fix) and let it restart a couple of times.

Hi JF,

It sounds like you're on an older version of Rise Player. You'll need to upgrade to the newest version from help.risevision.com/create-a-display to get rid of this error message.
