Chrome Player Keeps Restarting

In the past few days we've had nothing but issues with the Chrome Player on Intel NUC machines.

We are only running Images, clock, Weather and Google Calendar. If an Image is scheduled to come down on a specific day, then all of a sudden the player crashes at that slide, does the loading animation and starts over. I've had this happen on three Images (Using Image Widget) with scheduled take downs in the past two days.

Now, our displays are blocked with no detailed explanation as to why, though Im sure it has to do with the crashing of the player ever minute or so.

Glen,

Can you provide some more information?
  • Operating System
  • Chrome Version
  • Type of Widgets (you say image, is it the item, widget, or folder?)
  • Where are your images hosted
  • What type of file are these images

Windows 7
Chrome 43.0.2357.124 m (Up To Date)
Image Widget (As stated) with JPGs
The background is using Image Folder with JPGs
Google Calendar
Weather
Clock

After restarting the machine yesterday, it worked for a bit then started again so I had to remove the Image that was scheduled to come down later in the day.

Came in this morning to it happening again with a different slide scheduled to come down at 5:30pm today.

We too are having a terrible issue keeping our customers Rise Vision Players from not Crashing.
I have a cronjob on Linux that will reopen the Player if it isn't running, but it continues to crash. We didn't have this issue before, so it has to be some type of bug in the Rise Vision Player. I see you mention the ChromeOS beta channel has fixed it for some users. What about those running another OS, will we have to wait for a Rise Vision Chrome App Player update to see stability again?

Linux Ubuntu, Intel i3 Processor, 4GB RAM
RisePlayerPackagedApp 1.24.32
1-06-037
Chrome 43.0.2357.81

See screenshot below of the results.

Would you mind sharing the CRON that you are using for the auto restart. That would be very handy.

Hi Glen,
Sorry I am a little behind on the thread. I believe Rise Vision has put together a more official cron with directions here: https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/rise-player-on-ubuntu-crashing-use-this-scri...

My cron is a little more basic, theirs has error reporting etc.

pgrep chromium-browse > /dev/null || /usr/bin/chromium-browser --profile-directory=Default --app-id=mfpgpdablffhbfofnhlpgmokokbahooi start > /dev/null

Hopefully this helps somewhat...things are pretty hectic over here with all the crashing.

Joe,

In your case, we know the issue. We logged this bug with Google quite some time back when we noticed a problem on the Development Channel. We escalated it once it made it to Beta, but it made it's way to Stable before Google took care of it. Right now our Ubuntu uptime display running the Beta channel of Chrome is running as expected. There is always the option of going with Beta until the fix makes it's way to Stable.

Thanks Blake! I performed a full on stress test on the media player yesterday and it didn't crash once, the Chrome version 43.x-stable would have crashed 20 times given the same timeframe.

Google probably wont push v44.x-beta to v44.x-stable, until July 26th. When Google makes that decision will it correspond with the Auto Upgrade Player Browser Version setting in Rise Vision? Or how quickly is the stable version pushed on your end?

Thank you!

Joe,

Really glad to hear it. I've been pulling my hair out over this situation!

We don't have any hand in the auto update. Once Google pushes the update, Google runs a scheduled task on your machine to update Chrome. If you don't want to wait for the update, you can go to the Chrome Menu, About Google Chrome, and check for/install the latest version.

Good evening again Blake, I'm seeing this issue again.... 44-beta had been looking solid, but now is crashing again. 43-stable is also still crashing.

I am aware of the 43.x.103 update that Google released earlier this week, and the post in regards to the ChromeOS (https://community.risevision.com/rise_vision_inc/topics/did-you-switch-to-the-chrome-os-beta-channel...) ... which ultimately Linux or Chrome still rely on the same version, I would image. I haven't had any of my Rise Players auto-upgrade yet. But I was able to pull the latest stable version from Google.com onto Linux.

Even with that, I am seeing crashing on 43.81, 43.103, and 44.x-beta...I may be requiring too much from the browser, so I here is my presentation. http://bit.ly/1KiEyPC

I've tried turning off all of the Fades, Slides, etc. but still am seeing the crashing.

I'm on Lubuntu 14.04 64-bit, Intel i3 Processor, with 4GB RAM.

I understand this is out of your total control with Google, however I wanted to report my issue so that you could replicate.

Thank you,
Joe Kirchner

Blake, some additional information I just came across. According to the Google Issue Log...even though I'm running those updated stable and beta versions, the fix may not be present for the Linux OS. Please see post #54 from bartfab@chromium.org.

Have a read over it, because I may be misinterpreting, but that would make sense why the version difference doesn't seem to fix my issue. I may have to wait till 44 comes out.

Thanks again Blake!

Joe,

Curious, are you still seeing crashes even with Chrome 44?
