Chrome app VS Windows App questions

Previously when I was first setting up my RiseVision display on windows machines, I was told that the Chrome App was the most stable & worked the best compared to the windows app. I had tons of issues with crashing, video playback etc until we switched to chrome kiosk app. It has been working like a champ for the is past year with minor issues. Now I want to setup a few different machines but should I be switching to the windows app on all the machines? Does it only work on windows 10 or will it also work on Windows 7 or 8? Does it work with both the new builder & old presentations?

Hi Edwin,

The Windows Player you can download here will work on Windows 10 and 7. We recommend Windows 10, but we are supporting Windows 7 until Jan of 2018. We do not support Windows 8.

We do not recommend the Chrome App Player, as we have put development on that Player on hold. More on that can be found here.

The Windows Player will work with all Presentations, but if you run into any issues, always feel free to bring them up to us!

Will raspberry pi & Mac OS no longer be officially supported then?

Edwin,

We don't have a Mac OS Player, and while we do not support Pi, some Community users take part in a very active discussion about running Raspberry Pi here.

I hope that helps!

Sounds good. Testing it out on a windows 10 machine right now, software looks a lot cleaner then previous windows rise vison software however I am not getting any playback from my webm files using the rise vision player just a black screen but the same presentation is looping fine on a windows machine running the chrome kiosk app. Any advice on what might be the problem? The presentation was built on the old presentation builder would that cause anything?

OK so after a little more testing, I've had this happen on both the old player and the new one now when using the rise storage and video files if you change files in the folder out it has issues playing the files. You have to create a new folder and reupload the exact same files and it plays fine. Idk why it does this or if there is a fix for this. Thanks!

Edwin,

My apologies, I didn't hit Submit with my last comment. I meant to ask if there was a network rule that may have been blocking the videos from downloading to the Display. Maybe a rule that is set to the Windows machines, but not the Chrome machines.

Just so I understand your use case here:

1. The videos are playing in the Presentation.
2. You modify the folder to add a new video, remove a video, etc.
3. The existing videos stop working in your Presentation.
4. You upload the exact same videos to a new folder, and update your Presentation to point to those, and they begin working again.

Is that accurate?

Sorry, one last thing to clarify, the video that you add or remove in Step 2, it isn't one of the videos that is playing in the Presentation, right?

Thats right. I will create a folder with videos A, B & C in it. Then later on I will add video D & 1 of 3 scenarios happen.

1. The most common all the videos stop playing and I all I will see is black.

2. Videos A, B, C will play but D will not play.

3. Videos A, B, C will not play but D will just be the only one that loops.

I have yet to have it work without uploading them all into a new folder and then changing the presentation to look into the new folder.

Edwin,

I've been testing this, and I can't recreate what you are seeing. However, I have it set up like this:

- All videos are in 1 folder, and I am using the Video Widget to look at that 1 folder.

- When I remove a video or upload a video with the same name, everything works as I expected.

I realized that in the steps above, it sounds like you are doing these all as single instances of videos, is that right?

If so, can you try changing it to look at the entire video folder, and see if that solves the issue?

Thanks!

Edit: Sorry hit submit before I was finished.

The files are not of the same names when I upload them, they are with different names. When I tell the presentation to pull up the folder I always select the entire folder and not just the files inside the folder. To test it out and possibly replicate do the following.

Using the classic builder (my presentations running this currently are in that builder) Build a presentation with the video player and select a folder running videos A, B, C. Let the presentation run for a few hours.

Then go and add in the same folder video D & refresh the presentation to get the new file. This is when 1 of the 3 scenarios I talked about before will happen for me.

Edwin,

When you say classic builder, you mean you are building these at rva.risevision.com, right?

Can you send me a link to your Presentation so I can see if I can see something obvious that stands out? You can just share a link to a Presentation preview. Thanks!
