Branding / White Labelling

  • Under Consideration
We would love the ability to White Label the Rise Vision platform to give our customers a smooth experience. We have been following Rise Vision since just before the feature was removed. At that time, it was said it could come back as a premium service. We have waited. I then received word that it is not under development at all. I see many other users asking for the same functionality. It was suggested we start an "Idea" that will hopefully get backed for development. I feel Rise is missing a big opportunity here for some large customers.

Thanks Matthew, be sure to click "Like" at the top right to add your vote.

I feel Rise Vision is missing some opportunity here for add-on sales as well. With a white labeled product, I don't see it being difficult to talk our managers into paying for Rise Storage and premium widgets.

This is something that has been of interest to me for some time.   I have backed off because of concerns with instability but I feel this is on it's way to being resolved if not already.

A white label would need to be done right with custom domains and most importantly custom stores that give us the option to remove certain items that would be direct competition from within.  As there is a cost to all of this, being somewhat competitive with other white label options should be kept in mind.

Hi all,

Please see the post here regarding this subject. Unfortunately, when this was posted, it did not garner enough interest for us to pursue it at that time. If you would like to see this feature implemented, please continue to upvote this thread.

I agree.. it's a step in the right direction as far as ad management, but it's not a white label solution. It may be of interested to some users though.

It was a small mention inside of a large announcement about thew New Common Header. I feel like more people used this feature than they probably realize.. or don't know to ask for it. Thanks for liking the idea - hopefully we can see it back in the future!

I'd just like to bump this topic for all the new users (that may not know to ask for it) or the old users (who may have missed the fact that it's gone).

We think Rise is a great fit for us.. we have custom widgets providing content to our users, we provide the hardware and support. We're looking to expand our current 130+ screens on our old signage system, and go forth with RV. We've taken RV to a few small shows, and be hitting a larger trade show in February. We'd like to begin converting our old systems over, and the sky's the limit for growth!

Currently we're in development of our own Admin Tool that we can release to our users via your API's. This is great and awesome, we're glad to have the ability to integrate into your system. Better yet though, we'd love to give them more control of their signs. Let me make a template and give them access to playlists in certain placeholders. Heck, give them the whole thing if they want it. :)

Any thoughts from Rise with regard to this? I feel operators like me are a great symbiotic relationship for Rise.. let us do some of the legwork and expand the network, and at the same time pay you money so you can continue developing awesome applications!

Cheers :)

Hi Matthew!

It's currently not something that we have a plan for, and we have a large backlog of improvements and bug fixes.

We are taking notice of the thread, and the request for the feature. As it continues to gain traction, I'm sure more internal discussions will come up. We'll be sure to keep everyone up to date when we have more information!

Unfortunately, I don't think it's planned currently. I don't think the people who upvote this are anywhere near the amount of people looking to use it, though. I believe there are many people who don't know to ask for the functionality; or if they used it before, they are not aware it's missing. I will say the ability to white label was a huge selling point for us in the beginning and one reason we chose Rise in the first place. To see it go away has meant a big load of work on us to get the same product to market. We could've been focusing on sales or more custom widgets rather than developing our own customer admin tool.

I hope we see it back!

Thank you Wendi for creating this post. For some reason I had not seen any of the other white label posts, and I'm glad it is being reviewed once again.

In my opinion, digital signage is most powerful when someone develops a whole product to serve the full needs of a target customer. This functionality would allow network operators fill this gap.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled TRUE white labelling !.

True white labeling. The current system keeps a 'powered by Rise' link at the foot of every page shown in the user interface, so for resellers, their customers are just one click away from knowing they have just 'paid for some software that was free online'. Whilst in many closed communities (schools, worship, internal use by chains etc) this won't be an issue, for a true commercial service provider, it makes Rise simply unusable - which is a real shame. I'm proposing simply making this footer optional, in exactly the same way as the banner ads and sales link URL. Resellers have the confidence to use Rise to build big networks - and Rise still see the increase in user numbers that is apparently behind having the link there in the first place.

Being able to rebrand it as your own was part of their original brand promise, that it was open source and you could brand it as your own. You can do things like rewrite their git hub source code, but it's a lot more work than simply returning to a model that lets you brand it yourself.

The increased reliance on their storage (or reselling googles cloud to you) from inside the UI as well as increasing number of paid monthly per screen apps, I'm sure the economics model should be enough to balance out the ability for resellers and private networks to use the platform and gain more user base/market share in the DOOH market.

This is a classic example of trying to leverage open source communities initially and then drifting away from them over time when your own platform has matured on the backs of your community.

Google is doing it now with chrome and other platforms, I guess that's just the trend on how companies leverage their community for growth - ethically or otherwise.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Branding - White labeling options.

Guys, I remember this came up in a few other posts.  The users in the other posts were concerned about rise poaching or taking customers  from them once they discovered it was a free platform.

The response was always the same.   The reseller should offer a value add and not just sell access to a free platform.  Ideas, ranged from offering design work, selling/leasing players, support etc.

Now, every time my customer goes to add a widget or content they are being offered players, design services, support and everything else that we were told is the reason we shouldn't worry about branding.

What protections are in place to provide us the peace of mind that our customers remain our customers?

Suggestion:  I believe the best and possibly only solution is to offer a resellers program with full branding capabilities including access through our own domain.

All,

I did a little clean up and merged similar topics to try and gather anyone who has shown any interest in this topic into one thread. If something has been lost along the way my apologies.

As per a discussion with Matt I removed a couple of billing related items from our top requirements list and I now have the following summary:
  • Network Operator brands Rise apps with their logo, use custom domain, and all references to Rise are removed, including from PlayerNetwork Operator selects what functions their Sub-Companies can see and use, this includes Rise Support and Documentation
  • Network Operator is able to choose what Products are available from the Store and they can add their own
  • Network Operator receives commission on all sales from Store for their Sub-Companies
  • Network Operator provides first tier support and can purchase second tier Priority Support from Rise
  • Network Operator can specify Presentation Edit rights by Placeholder
  • Network Operator can purchase Storage for all Sub-Companies
  • User is able to make limited content changes, such as text, from mobile app
And Wendi still looking for clarification on this point of yours:
Permissions - Allow roles for users on per-display or per-company basis"
Could you clarify / elaborate on what you would like to see here?

Are there any other top level requirements from anyone else out there? Anyone else interested in this topic?

As I mentioned in a prior thread I am concerned that there is not enough interest in this service to support it's development effort. Given that we will remove all means by which we fund the platform to provide a white label option we will need to offer this as a premium service. With this in mind I am worried that there still isn't enough volume to make this financially doable for us and affordable for the few network operators that have expressed an interest. Are there any suggestions or thoughts on how we can go about getting more support for this topic?

Thanks

I say we all print window-stickies that say "Your Brand Here...learn more at risevision.com" and slap them on every TV we walk by. Guerilla marketing at its finest.

But seriously, I think there's a lot of interest for this - and many companies want it, but don't know how or where to look for it.

I'm wondering if some simple PR through online articles/press releases would do the trick. It's been a while, but I started guest blogging for an AV publication - I could put something together. I'm wondering if the folks at other IT/DigitalsSIgnage/DOOH/Industry blogs would be interested to throw this idea out.

Or maybe a DSF hangout that simply acts as a discussion around private labeling for digital signage. There may be other experts from other companies to even it out, but there's always some awareness that's driven.

Maybe someone here could put together a video doing a teaser overview of what this could entail and blast out some facebook advertising to IT/AV folks? Or maybe a viral-driven video that shows a lot of displays covered in cats? Just spitballing here.

Hey Byron,
I think if you are just looking at the number of users who want it multiplied by whatever the cost of having the white labeling feature turned on is, then it might not add up in terms of financial doability, but if you look at it as a way to bring in more customers who will use your other services, I think it will be. For example...

We had to build a customer interface since we didn't have a white labeling option. In doing that, we had to set up file storage access for our system. Because of that, none of our users will even have the opportunity of paying to use Rise Storage.

Every widget our system uses has to be set up outside of Rise so very few of them will make it into our system. Really, only Scott's Youtube widget has, and I don't see many more coming in. That make's it impossible for any of our users to shop for widgets that we haven't specifically included.

And as far as widgets go, our original idea for Rise was to use a white labelled Rise Vision system and develop custom widgets to sell in the store and use in our customers' systems. Now, I don't have time to develop full widgets to sell because I am maintaining the interface. So now, Rise doesn't get any commission for having our widgets in the store.

As things are, I'm not even really sure how we are supposed to pay for anything. We don't use Rise Storage. We tried to pay for Premium Support, but we read that it didn't include developmental support. We build our own widgets. We do pay Scott when a user plays a video, but that's it.

We have a sales and support team here that brings in new business and supports our existing customers. Your team is never going to have to mess with supporting our users. We have bothered you enough so that we now understand how things work well enough to help them. These customers are being diverted away using your services instead of being passive income streams. They're like missed combos in Street Fighter II.

Byron,
Thanks again for further discussion and for merging like topics.

The points given look great to me. I might add that a Network Operator could also purchase store items on behalf of the sub-company. I'd rather not bother the customer to pay for widgets; I would just roll it into our pricing and let us pay on their behalf.

We personally would not be worried about a commission from the store. I think fueling Rise is more mutually beneficial. Let us help you make sales while providing for new customers.

As for the Permissions point I made.. the "per-company" is really taken care of by using sub-companies. I was just covering bases if this was all under one umbrella company with some type of folders. I just want our clients isolated to their own displays and presentations. If we could get granular to the presentation level, it might be nice, but assuming Editor/Publisher roles are still enabled, that should be fine for our need.

To speak to development.. believe me, I understand things are much more complex that people realize. We've spent considerable development time on many projects with high hopes. Keeping that in mind, I honestly feel the white label would be helpful and even beneficial for you. We could do it with fairly minimal requirements. I think a simple approach would be nice for starters..

1. Let us replace RV logo in the common header for our company and sub-companies.
A generic domain would be great, or I believe we could forward and mask.
2. Let us further edit the common header..
   a) Remove the new Home tab, or have it similar to the Start tab in RVA where I can input a custom presentation
   b) Remove/hide Schedules, Displays, Alerts. I understand some of this can be hidden with roles.
3. Allow editing of the store to hide/show/reorder. This actually wouldn't be a really bad idea in general anyway. It's a pain clicking and searching just to add an image. To be honest though, my users don't even need to be Store Purchasers. We'll likely handle the payment of anything they want.

Honestly, all I really need is for my client to have access to edit a presentation or two and maybe decide which to play in the schedule. We came to Rise since there was the ability to get a widget going with our content; we're very happy with the results. On the administrative end, I would say 90% of our clients really just want to adjust timing of widgets or upload new images. They don't really need much access at all. This is where I'd adore having some templates that only give them access to certain placeholders.

I'm not sure what price point we'd be looking at for the above functionality, but some points to ponder..

* The whole act of white labeling should bring you extra income. We'll actively be bringing customers to you. Those customers will then want add-ons like Storage, YouTube, Facebook. We loved that Rise had a lot of offerings we could give to our clients. We'd be creating more commerce in your store.

* We're actually removing some of your responsibilities. We'll be taking on training, support, hardware. Since more users are offsetting this task, you'll have less support duties on your end.

(I also realize the new aps.risevision.com is still under construction. If there's a good place for feedback regarding this besides the random posts I've made, feel free to point me there!)

As always, thanks for listening to us. I'll just leave my 2c here for today :)

Alex, thanks for the marketing boost. I will also get a bumper on the public web site and the app asking anyone who has any interest in this topic to please jump in here.

Stephen, completely understood that there is a lot of untapped potential out there for this functionality but I do want to see more support than what we currently have before I go after it. We have 1,000's of users right here and now that are supporting us that we owe 1,000's of backlog items to and before I add to that list I need to make sure that it is wanted by a comparable percentage of the userbase or we will end up diluting our efforts all across the board. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree with you, it is just a balancing act...

Wendi, agreed that a NO can purchase on behalf of a sub-company and we have that functionality now BTW. Got it re. content permissions and we are working in that direction. There is no dependency that we have between that work and the white label considerations.

With regards to "The whole act of white labeling should bring you extra income. We'll actively be bringing customers to you. Those customers will then want add-ons like Storage, YouTube, Facebook. We loved that Rise had a lot of offerings we could give to our clients. We'd be creating more commerce in your store." Curious, what's the difference? Could you you elaborate on exactly why you aren't bringing customers to us now? Are the barriers a logo, function permissions and store product control? Or is there more to it?

With regards to "I also realize the new aps.risevision.com is still under construction. If there's a good place for feedback regarding this besides the random posts I've made, feel free to point me there!" doesn't matter, right here is just fine. I read every post from every user. Thanks

@Byron Keener

I think white label and labeling the API is the same. When i set up a client on the software it would be nice to have the support links and our logo in the interface. So as a client is using  the software they are reminded who is supporting them.

In other words, have the Rise API not refer to RiseV at all. That all of the contact and maybe even the chat option is pointed to our company. That maybe too big but in some cases this may be something that people would be willing to pay for.
