Auto-Refresh Player

Similar to Auto-Reboot, this just refreshes.

Reason why is:   When there are widgets in a presentation, they typically don't have any auto-updating.  We have a number of widgets in our presentation...weather, clock, and fitness schedules.  These need to refresh daily.  The auto-reboot sometimes affects certain placeholders to not display, which requires an added refresh.  If we could just refresh, that would be great.

Even better would be if we could have the displays have the option of rebooting certain days of the week.

This would actually help us out, as well. Just a simple F5 type refresh in the player at a scheduled time. I have been writing this functionality into individual widgets, but a global refresh would be nice.

Gentlemen,

Just to confirm, there is a Restart Player option for each Display on the Display's page, which restarts Player running on a Display (Imagine that :)):

But if I understand you correctly, you want a setting that just refreshes the existing Presentation running on the Display, is that correct?

I'd like to flesh this out a bit more to see if any others are interested in this functionality. Most specifically, where would this setting reside?

Just to manage expectations, this isn't something we would be able to add anytime in the near future, but I'm curious to hear how users would expect this functionality to work.

Thanks!

I agree, the gentle nudge of a .reload() as opposed to a full power cycle. We have weather data streaming in all the time in different formats from different places, and for whatever reason sometimes things to come in incorrectly. Simply refreshing the browser will handle most of the hiccups we encounter.

I haven't seen the menu you posted Robb, but is that going to be a scheduled event to restart the player? I can restart the player using the old display menu, but I can't schedule it.

I haven't looked a lot at how the player itself works, but is restarting the player that much different from refreshing a web page? Is the same information called?

Stephen,

Restarting the Player won't restart the Display itself, it effectively kills Rise Player, and restarts it, so Chrome would stop and restart. Not so much a refresh as a complete restart :).

Thanks for the other clarifications and ideas everyone!

That would probably work fine for us, if we had the ability to schedule it.

We would LOVE the ability to auto-refresh a presentation at X interval (personally, we'd have it update every 5 minutes). Currently, it's impossible to auto-refresh Content by URL (if I'm not mistaken), and an auto-refresh of the presentation would fix that.

David,

What OS are you running on? It's possible that if you're running Windows or Linux, you could create a scheduled task to restart the player.

I would also like this feature- basically a reload function that clears the cache and reloads the presentation. Possibly this would be in the display settings screen, it would say something like reload interval - with a drop down, 1 min, 5 min, 7 min, 10 min ,15 min, 20 min , 1 hr, etc...
