Amazon fire tv came out and of course its android with amazon store. No Google Play. So i wanted to see how many wanted me to test and add my already android app My Rise Player to amazon store. First i will need to test before release and i will need to get a device. Once i see that the app will do fine i will add it to amazon store. The good thing is that this could be a better device than most android mini pcs since its backed by a big company. My concerns are startup and orientation. I will have to do some reading to make sure what is allowed. Some tv devices won't let you autostart an app. :( Hopefully amazon will.

From test and from what i got it looks like rise will work on an Amazon fire tv device. I had to use a google tv app i made to get it to work, but i have a lot to add to the app to get it in par with the regular My Rise Player app.

From test these are the issue/thoughts i have. This is Android 4.2.2 with amazon on top just to be clear.

1. Geolocations don't work. I don't see a setting to turn this on so I'm thinking its turned off internally. I had to use custom address instead and it worked. Not a bid deal.

2. Video is an issue even with my gadget so i will be working to get that to work as well. Android and video = always an issue. Big Deal but i will prevail.

3. The look and fill will be different than the My Rise Player. Reason is your using a remote so a few changes had to be made.

4. Will see if orientation will work but i have to program it in first. On the to do list.

5. The device will not need root since it doesn't have navigation bar. If orientation doesn't work I'm not going to include a root for it. I will leave it landscape only but from what i heard portrait can be done.

6. Overall the device performed well. I will probably make a video gadget to get video working for this device before i release it as beta.

Anyway should have it up fairly soon. :)

Ok the app is finished and will be submitting it fairly soon. It's a stripped version with less features but still gets the job done.
Here is what I have

1. Geolocations don't work. Amazon doesn't allow it so you need to use custom address.

2. I have video working but the gadget needs a little work, so I will let you know when video completely works.

3. The app starts right into the player settings. Has boot to start and resolution checker.

4. Orientation doesn't work. It turns but the display is skewed. It's bad so lanscape display only.

5. No security and no company info. The home button on the remote is hardware coded and doesn't get passed through the app so security is kinda useless because it can't stop going back to the home screen. I can still add it in if needed. I decided to just use the player settings as the only dialog because the remote functions are easier to use and navigate.

6. Restart app works and reboot just does the same as restart. Need root to do a shut down and this app will not do anything root.

7. As far as the playing it does better than most 4.2.2 devices I have seen because of the hardware. Video is different in coding but performs the same way as 4.2.2. Im hoping with in a year they move to 4.4 as the android os underneath.

8. True 1920x1080 :)

Other than that it looks good.

The app has been submitted to amazon for the Fire TV. I hope they approve the app. It does really well from my testing and i do have video up and running, but will need to use a gadget i made.

Still working on this. amazon seemed to not like a few things so I'm having to change a few little things so they would approve it. It's taken them over a week just to get info on what they wanted changed. Will let everyone know when it's live errrr.

I have to write about this because in a way i just want to laugh. I have developed an app for the amazon fire and submitted it in for approval. The first time it was denied because bluetooth disconnection would crash the app. Thats fixed. The second time it was denied because of resolution not being 100%. Ok here is where i scratch my head at amazon. We all know that the presentation resolution that is made is generally the size the of the display resolution. So i made them a 1080p resolution presentation with a schedule and id to test because most will use 1080p on there fire. They denied me a third time after this of the same reason. So i took a look at my display setting for them to see what resolution it reported for there test. It seems they are using an emulator with a resolution of 2560x1600. Ok thats odd because the device only goes 1080p hints why i know there using an emulator. So i question them on it and they just denied me again with no regard to the resolution. Now i really have to say why didn't they answer my question because thats need to know. So now i have sent a new case in questioning everything plus proving them what there resolution is and making them a presentation to the size of there screen. Hopefully this time they would understand that they are denying apps for no reason. :)

Best of luck with that. I've had to work with Amazon in the past for both Android apps and Kindle publications. I feel your pain bro. Sounds like they've gotten better though... It used to take 2 weeks for them to deny your app for no good reason. :)

I hope it works out in your favor, or at least you receive a better explanation as to why they won't approve it - something you can work with.

Well it finally passed after the point i made to them. Now it should be up fairly soon. I don't know how long it will take to show up on the store after the approval but i know it passed. Its a standard app that does the essentials. To get video working please send me a message on support@scottsdigitalsignage.com i have made a specific video gadget for this device. Thanks

Here is the link to amazon for the app.

http://www.amazon.com/Scotts-Digital-...

Once you click get it now with one click, give your device a few minutes and it should appear in the apps section to download.

William,

I saw this today and was eager to try it out however it lists all of Fire TV devices as being incompatible?

Thanks!

Actually amazon cut off geolocations from the device so that's why no geolocations. Amazon cut a ton of things off but you can use custom addresses instead and should work just the same. Also I will attempt to change the boot animation and if successful will make a tutorial on that. Anyway if you catch something let me know. Thanks for liking it :)

It's working really well so I am not sure why they would not want to sell them for signage...for $99 they rock! (I fixed the time issue in settings on the device).

K good to here. If you do video let me know. I had to come up with practically new way to get it to work. It works and does the job but haven't had time to test it's limits. Any I'm excited to here how well it works for you.

Cool. The only video I have in my presentations at the moment is a live stream via USTREAM which I am pulling with an embedded URL. It was obeying the autoplay command at first but now seems to have stopped for some reason.

Never tried ustream. Amazon did something with video that Is weird. That's why I had to make a different video gadget.

I have seen a good jump in downloads for the Fire TV and just wanting to know if there is anything i need to add to the player for those who are using it.

I have been asked about video and i do have a gadget for testing, but other than that i haven't heard anything from anyone. Just looking for feedback and like to get info from others. :)

William, can I get a hold of the gadget for testing video on the Fire TV? Video is the one thing I haven't gotten to work.

If you need video use the android html5 widget in the store. That should work in all versions of android. I do beleave that rise video will work as well but it's slow on rotations.

Will video work on an Amazon Firestick using the HTML5 video widget? Or, are there any other ways to run video on a Firestick?

I would use the android html5 widget. Both should work but i would prefer the android html5 widget because the rise html5 widget has been known to give android issues.

I bought the Firestick this week, setup a demo presentation and all seems to work fine now.  General question, why is there so little activity on the Rise community forum? Are they losing users? Seems we have lost a lot here.

I have had a couple of signs running with no problem on windows boxes for  while and haven't visited lately. I don't find anywhere with good training on the new editor etc. Is my only option the $75 month support choice?

Last time I checked, there weren't any major issues to comment on. Like William mentioned, if there aren't any problems to fix, you won't see that much activity here. As for the new editor, you might want to review some of the video tutorials (if they are still available). The new editor isn't that different from the old one I find. What was your question?

If they are still available I cannot find them. Don't know why they would take them donw.

A little followup on the Firestick. I have a playlist that consists of 2 presentations, both static images and text.
It runs for a while then freezes up. Not sure what the issue is. Am excited about using this as a player but time will tell.

Could be anything that could cause the freezing. We are working on an update to fix several issues. Hopefully the update will fix your issue and some of the other issues we have found. Thanks
