Alternative Options to Rise Storage

There are a bunch of questions floating around regarding alternatives to Rise Storage. Where you host your presentation assets is an important decision. If you are unable to use Rise Storage for whatever reason, please read over the suggestions below.

Utilize existing Resources If you have a website, you are likely already paying to host your website files on a server somewhere. Talk with the person within your organization that is responsible for maintaining your website and see how you can go about hosting your videos and images on the same server.

This is probably the best alternative for those looking for a “free” option.

3rd Party Hosting Solutions If you are unable to piggyback on an existing file server, your next best option will be to go with a service that is aimed specifically at serving files in the capacity you need. We've used and had good results with Rackspace and Amazon S3.

File Sharing Services Apps like DropBox and Google Drive are examples of file sharing services. They are great for sharing files with colleagues, but they are not intended to handle repeated requests for the same file and there is a risk of files frequently being downloaded becoming blocked. For this reason, we would stay away from using these types of services for hosting your content assets.

If anybody has any opinions or recommendations for other hosting solutions feel free to chime in.

Last, just to make sure everybody knows, if you are going to use a 3rd party for hosting your content assets, here is how you add those items to your Presentation. This example references the Video Item, but the process is the same for an Image Item.

Let’s say I'm hosting a video on the same server we host our website is hosted, and the URL that points to my video is http://www.risevision.com/video/rva.webm.

When you select “Add Video” you are presented with the Video Settings. Instead of selecting the Storage link to the right of the URL field, enter into the URL field the link that points to your video. In this example, my URL field would look like the image below.

Save your changes and publish the Presentation and Player will attempt to retrieve the video at the URL you provided.

Thank you, Is the storage fee per "company" under the account log in? Working to determine what aspect we will use. Appreciate the reference.

Thanks Neal,

I have 2 quick questions.

1. If using Google Drive, files will only be downloaded when they are changed - correct?
If this is the case, coupled with "My content will not change very frequently - maybe once a
    month",  then
2. With Google Drive, I can get images to work, but not videos. Any suggestions?

With images I use work fine (i.e.  https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/ZhQ1ZJL9QRcp17OpFmWEWAl4E_CxYCKMcUgH68c4mvOHYnuemQuVlZxZ7dYlXIlkUM...
but the videos will not load (i.e.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/BQ3RUkVt3C26s5FMMnwWjxgYa7sb_we7F0KPn-vgaBzMmDr0fgxSnqhvw7VoyvrBb3...

I appreciate any help you or anyone else in the community can offer.

Thanks,
Brian

The cost for using Rise Storage is per company. You can find additional information here.

Regarding the use of Google Drive and how often the files are accessed.  Images will be downloaded every time a Player completes a Scheduled Restart, as well as when you press the Restart Player button from the Display's page.  Both of these actions clear the browser's cache and necessitates the content to be downloaded again.  You'll also have to keep in mind the number of Displays that are in use accessing the content.  Each of them will need to access the file.

At this time, I've not seen videos work successfully from Google Drive.

Thanks.

It is something we're investigating.  We'll let everybody know when we have something to announce.

Thanks.

One possible alternative: I could not get Google Drive, Live Drive, or DropBox to work for videos, so I went to GoDaddy and signed up for web hosting for 2 years for $125. Free domain, 100GB storage, unlimited bandwidth. https://www.godaddy.com/hosting/web-hosting.aspx?ci=9009  Uploaded my files via their cpanel applet (easy) and pointed risevision directly to my files (i.e. http://mfikiosk.com/images/logo.gif). All off RiseVision Storage. Took about 30 minutes to convert and now the secretary is managing the presentations.  Hope this helps.   Brian

Do you then just copy and paste/point the image URl to the Image URL space when you are uploading the image or video to the presentation? We host through godaddy already so this is an option for us. is there any pre-built CMS type interface to upload the files too and be able to search like in the current rise storage solution? Sorry I am not the most tech savy on this side of the game, and our tech guy is unavailable for the next week or so, just trying to compile some ideas and thoughts for him to set us up something. Would continue to use RV storage but the way we are separating our locations by "company" under our account it would get costly. Looking for a single interface to use across the board. Thanks for the heads up.... Cheers

Just for future and for others looking, I would recommend Rackspace Cloud Files.

It's a high availability CDN that will provide much better service and uptime over the likes of GoDaddy (I've been building websites and using web tech since 1997, and all the biggest issues I had were with clients using GoDaddy). It's also very easy to use and can be connected to easily with CyberDuck for bulk requirements.

You are only charged for usage too, so if you optimize your graphics and video nicely, you can keep your costs even lower.

@Messe, in risevision presentation did you selected my content to point to the videos in godaddy storage ? This is also a good idea of using godaddy.

I was thinking that if we can have something to sync between local storage and risevision storage then it will simplify many problems. Let see when will have some announcement in this direction from risevision team.

Yes. Created two directories on the website. One for images and the other for videos and pointed risevision directly to the files on the web (i.e. http://www.mfikiosk.com/videos/history.mp4)

So, there is no place to configure external storage in Rise? Where we can enter a URL that gets pulled up when we select "Storage"?

I have an ElFinder based file browser with ZeroConfig clipboard support. I was going to put that up as some sample code to get people going. Is there a doc I'm missing? I didn't see anything in the "Network" settings where I would expect it, and didn't see anything in the developer docs either.

Just curious. Wanted to teach some men to fish.

Hi Jason,

At this time there isn't a setting for an external storage site.

Thanks

In that case....

Hey kids! If you want to make your storage super-cool, you can use ElFinder and ZeroClipboard.

http://elfinder.org/
http://zeroclipboard.org/

ElFinder allows you to browse files, as well as showing thumbnails, uploading, cropping resizing, etc...

ZeroClipboard can "automatically" copy to your computer clipboard.

So how will billing/payments be handled for storage. If I have my account set up as a network admin and my sub companies are actually my clients accounts, allowing me to access all of them from my one email, will all payments have to go through me? Or, can each of my clients have a credit card associated with their storage for billing?

I setup the self hosted version of rise storage.  When I log in or try to upload a file storage both on my local server and in the rise platform still says I have 82 days left to purchase or stop using storage.  I was under the impression if I self hosted there would be no fee.  Was I wrong in this assumption?

Hi Terrence,

We don't have a self hosted version of Rise Storage.  You can certainly host your files elsewhere if desired, but they won't be listed in Rise Storage as a result. If your files are hosted elsewhere, you don't need to click on Storage when adding content to your Presentation, just enter the URL for your video/image in the appropriate fields.

Thanks.

If you were a previous RVA storage user than you still have a free trial ongoing. If you have modified it to use a different server then you won't have a problem when the trial expires since you aren't asking our server to do anything. If you doesn't want to see that status anymore you can remove the subscription status section from main.html in storage-client.

I should point out, that if you were to add the Video Item (for instance) and click on the Storage link next to the URL field, it will still point to our Rise Storage.  There isn't a setting that will have it point to other/custom repositories.

Thanks.

Would anyone be interested in an Amazon AMI image with ElFinder and ZeroClipboard already set up and ready to go?

I would charge $1 a month for the image, and you'd pay Amazon for actual transfer. It's probably not cost effective for a single user with a lot of data. It is probably VERY cost effective for some of the multi-user setups with small amounts of data per customer.

Let me know if there's any interest, and If it's there, I'll start working on it.

Hi Neal,

Can you list advantages if we get hosting from Rise.

Simple integration!
Yes you can host yourself, but it's going to be extra steps you have to do to get your content displayed.

With RiseVision Storage, it's integrated directly into the system already making it that much easier to get going.

Thanks for the info. I am still confused about the pricing. It says per company, what if I will be selling digital displays to departments here and I have only one company but with say 30 departments and each will have a content editor (30 users), will this be considered 1 company ($10 per month). Another question is, can we restrict a user to see only his/her presentation.

Thanks.

If there are multiple users within a company, there isn't a way to restrict a Presentation to a single user.

Regarding the pricing, you can find additional information here.

Another option is to use your free Google Drive to create a site at sites.google.com.   Once you do that, simply create a blank site as a placeholder, share it so that it is public.  Then in the manage sites area, you have a library you can store files used by your website.  I put all of them in there and they have valid links to the files, rather than html output.  I can't see how the rise player would make that many more requests for the images than any other site someone would create on Google.

Anyhow, that's an option.

You could just host an in-house webserver that hosts the few files you will need. As long as the webserver is accessible from where your display is, you can display the files. It does not need to be web-accessible unless you're doing displays at remote sites without a static VPN tunnel back to corporate.

so I can for example put my local url to that file? If raspberry pi is in the same network?

Anybody have any advice on a solution for several dozen users with a lot of constantly-changing content?

I work at a university and each department needs to have a folder for images that they will be constantly be uploading and removing images. Rise storage is perfect EXCEPT that users can change other department's folders. This is a deal breaker for us. We are currently using Concerto for digital signage and I like their permissions but it is highly unstable and breaking all the time for us .

Any input is highly appreciated.

Matthew,
What all did you end up using for file storage? I'm at a university as well so paying per "company" isn't an option for us either. Did you ever find a free solution?

Hi Kalene,
I never ended up switching to Rise because of this downfall. Definitely a deal breaker for our university.
I stayed with Concerto digital signage because it's completely free and has what we need (although it sometimes has issues).

We just use an IIS server in-house and link to it like: <img src="http://internal-server/img.jpg">; Works well for us, especially for mp4s or the like.
