Setup Questions for Alerting Available in Displays

I noticed the announcements that Alerting is now available in the new Displays section.

I've been interested in the Alerting for a while, but not quite sure how to go about it. The page linked isn't super detailed.

Essentially, we really just want to throw NWS alerts to our displays. These alerts are available in XML / CAP and ATOM format..

http://alerts.weather.gov/

From what I've read, we need some kind of service provider for this? I see RV gives me a Web Service URL that I gather I input to the provider. Are there any recommendations for something free we can use?

I've found Google Public Alerts.. I attempted to subscribe to a feed on this page:

https://alert-hub.appspot.com/subscribe

I get an error "Error trying to confirm subscription" .. from what I can tell it's because I'm missing some client code on the subscriber end (RV).

Anyway, am I way off base here? What can I use to take the Alert Feed I want (Ex. http://alerts.weather.gov/cap/tn.php?x=0) and get it to my box using the URL provided in my settings (Ex. https://rvaserver2.appspot.com/alerts/cap?id=xxxxxxxxxxxx). I just don't know what to do with this URL..

This looks like a nice feature, just not sure how we can implement it!

Thanks guys for all your great work :)

Hi Wendi,

Thanks for the questions! Yes, alerts are new to the displays App. I'm excited you noticed and will be giving this a try!

You will need a service provider for alerts. We've had good experienced with e2campus, and I've heard good things about Rave. If you wish to use another provider outside of those two, they will need to be CAP 1.2 compliant.

As far as the alert-hub.appspot.com service, I'm not really sure what is going on as I haven't tried it before. It looks like there is quite a bit of work that needs to go into that, and simply using the alerts.weather.gov url may not do the trick. I would recommend trying out one of the services above.

Minor note about the services above, you cannot sign up directly through their website, you will need to contact their support Email.
I personally recommend that you go with Rave, as e2campus is more geared toward educational institutions and may be strict about their criteria.

Thanks!

Any ballpark on Rave pricing without me having to contact them? We'd love alerts, but we aren't really interested in paying a third party..

We already ingest NWS data and incorporate into our own products. We send txt alerts from our own servers. We can get our data into CAP 1.2 compliant format if necessary if there is some way we can push it to the sign ourselves.

We're also interested in pushing ads/presentations to interrupt normal rotation for other reasons. If the Alerts feature is stuck with paid services, it may not work for us. Is the Alerts feature something people actually use with Rise Vision? I suppose if we were an educational institution and already had access to that service it may make more sense.

Hello,
I'm interested in Alerting but I'm not able to find the right menu and options in Rise Display.
Can you link me to the Rise announcement ?
Thanks.

Hey Thierry,

I saw the announcement over in the blog here:

http://blog.risevision.com/we-have-added-alerts-to-our-new-displays-app/

The Alerts feature was actually in the old tool also in the same place. It had mention of a future $2/mo fee, but if I understand correctly they are just keeping it free, at least for now. If you have access to one of the service providers and give it a whirl, I'd be interested in your experience. :)

Given Ashleigh's suggestion, I didn't bother with E2Campus. I did try to get some info from Rave. I also looked at Amerilert, following an older post here that suggests they work well.

We are a small businesses, and at this time only want alerting for 1-2 displays (in different cities). Both brushed me off and indicated they are for businesses only. I was unable to get any pricing.

Given that I am (at least at current) a single user, are Alerts useless for me? Is there no way we can push NWS alerts (which are already in CAP 1.2 format) over to our displays?
