4K Resolution Resetting to HD

I am using chromeboxes on 8 monitors in our offices, 3 of which are 4K monitors.  They work great, however, the resolution keeps resetting to 1920x1080, so when I come to the office in the morning, all of the 4K units are displaying the top left quarter of the presentation.  I then have to go in and re-select the 4K resolution on the chromebox and restart the player, which then seems to work just fine.  It seems that when the monitors (samsung) shut down, the chromeboxes reset the resolution.

I had another issue with orientation which you've fixed by pushing orientation settings via the displays.risevision.com utility, which totally bypassed the issue with the chromeboxes.  That same utility reports what the resolution is, but it would be really great to be able to push the resolution settings to the chromeboxes from this page.  Is there any way to do that?

Hi David,

Sorry for the frustration, what Chrome version are those Chromeboxes on? Are the managed or un-managed? And are they in  Kiosk mode?

Unfortunately our displays management app does not allow you to set the resolution just orientation. But I will pass that along as an idea.

Thanks,
Shea

Hi Shea,
They're unmanaged (although I've been trying like crazy to get a management subscription but Google's providers have proven to be quite useless if you aren't buying the gear from them)

They are not set in Kiosk mode because there are times when we need to use them for something other than signage.

I'm running version 46.0.2490.71 (64 bit)

David,

It sounds like this may be a bug with ChromeOS not recognizing the full resolution of the display. I'm curious, if you turn off the display and replicate the problem, then reboot the Chromebox, what happens?

Blake,

I agree, it does sound like an OS bug, but I'm hoping that RiseVision could add some code to the displays page to force a resolution like it does with orientation.  That would circumvent the bug.

Once the Chromebox has reverted back to 1080, it doesn't matter what I do, it stays on 1080.  It can always be reset back to 4K, then I have to shut down the RiseVision app and restart and it works just fine until the next restart.  Starting from a position where everything is working properly, if I shut off the 4K tv for a few seconds and turn it back on without so much as touching the Chromebox, the Chromebox resets to 1080.  If I don't touch the TV but restart the Chromebox, it also resets to 1080.  The fix isn't difficult, but it's a daily task, and I've not the first one here  (and I'm usually not), the screens don't display correctly.... very frustrating.

David,

It actually looks like this bug is already logged with google here. Unfortunately, if this is a system level issue with the display drivers on ChromeOS, it's unlikely any changes could be made to the Rise Player application to circumvent the issue.

Thanks.  It seems like there could be a system level command to update resolution, but if its not in the cards, then I guess its not in the cards.

Thanks!

No problem David.

I know this is an annoyance, so you should definitely post to that Google issue to bring some further voice to it!

I've actually posed a couple of times from different machines.  I've also switched one of them to Beta channel to see if there was something in the pipeline that might fix it but to no avail at this point.

thanks for the help
