happy I’m researching

Who needs sports content?

There have been a bunch of discussions in various places about the lack of sports content in Rise Vision versus Rise Display Network.

I'd like to try to quantify this and ask the community the following:

Who needs sports data? And if you do, what kind of data are you looking for?

Have you investigated any third party sports content providers? And if so what's your take on them?

What are you willing to pay for sports content?

If you do use sports content now who do you use and how happy are you with them?

Many thanks for the help!

I looked into just about every single free gadget and widget out there, and not one of them worked for this application because it was just too small. This is because most or all of them are designed for websites or desktops and not meant to fill 1/8 of a 1080p screen. Furthermore they are not at all dynamic in regards to size.

indifferent I’m Curious to see where this is headed
We service several restaurants...many sports bars. Almost every single one of them is running the live sports scores. This causes a problem for us that the new player does not have some of the things that we have "sold" our current customers on. Not totally the same...but what if you bought a cable or satellite TV subscription...and were a sports fan....then were told one day that they were no longer going to carry ESPN, ESPN2, VS., Speed Channel, Golf Network...you get the idea. The rest sort of becomes useless, IF that's what you wanted from it. That's where we are with our customer base. Not only that but I think the live sports scores feature on Rise is one of the best things that were ever offered. I know there were some update issues etc...but if those were worked out. I've found few things as visually appealing. It's very well done. As for paying for it. The problem becomes that with all the other live feeds not being offered, we already find ourselves needing to pay for other content. We'll be nickle and dimed into paying far more for the new platform than the old. If you are talking a buck or two per screen...it "might" be worth it. If we are talking $5-$10....my customers will likely tell me they are fine with ESPN.

  • Sports and Entertainment are the number ONE seller where my venues are concerned. I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE the content!

So far, my recent attempts at sports content have been ranked in the "ghetto" looking category :(

and YES...i'll pay - as long as it is a monthly for the whole account! Not per appliance :)

Thanks for the feedback so far.

On the price front I am hearing if it is under $2 per appliance or one flat fee for unlimited appliances you guys would be interested. Does that sound about right? Curious Phil, what's your flat fee threshold?

What I didn't hear was what sports data are you looking for?

I'm going to try to promote this thread to see if we can get more feedback as well. Thanks

    indifferent I’m just giving opinions
I LOVE the sports scores...updates. The colorful logos etc. We can get sports news from another source. In theory it looks pretty good...we don't use it yet, so I don't know first hand. I am afraid that at some point we will be nickle and dimed on the content buying. I can say that I would have paid double the current quoted flat fee for the new player with unlimited licenses if it had all the same Rise Content AND the improved functionality.

Hi All. My company Screenfeed is centered around giving those who deploy digital signage more licensed content options and at a reasonable price. Today we have Sports News-in-Pictures, Sports video news, Trivia as well as dozens of other channels. We've been looking at adding sports scores delivered with really nice visuals in a way that integrates with RISE. Look for this from us later this year or sooner. Sports data is expensive if you try to contract for it yourself, but our goal is to break that down to offer per player pricing that is reasonable.

happy I’m confident, that together, we will find the right solutions!
I don't know what it is with sports scores and highlights, but I get clients wanting it a lot too. Heck, we could be in the midst of World-War III, and people would rather have sports scores than breaking war-news I think.

I don't get it.....I could care less about sports, but then again, it's not about me. ;>p

My overall 02¢ in a perfect-world scenario from Rise would be:
Categories like well-done Sports, etc would be available á la carte at a cost of maybe $2-5 each per month per appliance as-needed only. And, maybe a monthly cap (ie, $99 unlimited) per category for those with larger deployments.

Jeremy- I love what you guys are doing! It looks fantastic and I'm looking forward to utilizing your service as well.
    • Of course, we're back to the issue of whether or not you can cost-justify this. If even 50% of your network operators are going to use the new platform's capabilities to grab sports content from other services, I can see where this isn't going to make fiscal sense.
    • Yes Jeff, but have you priced outside services? You can get a 6 minute loop worth of content for $50 a month.... That could get old quick and doesn't leave much room for the seller to make any money...it all goes right through to the content provider. It's my #1 concern right now. The availability of quality content is improving but the profitability in providing it get decimated. Rise is providing EVERYTHING for the same price currently with the old player as some companies are charging for one 2 minute segment.

Having to deal with Mexican specific sports scores in SPANISH has been a big obstacle for me. I found that you can find many RSS feeds with pictures that you can use with the Rise RSS Gadget and will be good enough for most people keeping them informed and up to date with the world of sports.

    Avi,

With the Scores RSS feeds you have found, are any in English? I found a couple in English and they looked terrible.

    Thanks!

haven't tried english ones just yet. However I was using fifa.com feeds in spanish and looked great. The english ones are probably good too but that's for someone interested in world wide soccer news... I'll let the forum know if I come across anything...
