Is there an up-to-date list of the preferred and best-priced panels for digital signage? I haven't really been able to find good guidelines for this. I expect that Plasma is not as good a choice as LCD (burn in, weight), but what about vertical vs horizontal mounting issues?
I suspect we should ensure that the panel we choose has been tested in a vertical position for an extended period of time. I imagine there are thermal and ventilation (heat dissipation) issues, and perhaps structural integrity issues to think about.
Does anyone have a "favorite" one they have been using, that works well vertically and is not entirely too expensive?
Vertical mounting of flat panels: Can it be done with any type of panel, or do we need to be careful?

Portrait vs. Landscape is a good question.
I would say it all depends on the manufacturer and the model of display. We tend to recommend and use NEC and have used both the P-Series (professional/commercial) and the E-Series (consumer/semi-pro). On their site they give whether it is landscape only or if it can be oriented portrait. In my experience the P-Series can do both as it has a more solid chassis and better ventilation/fans. The E-Series should not be set for portrait, i don't know if it is exactly because of chassis and ventilation or if it is due to the fact that it has Built-in speakers along the bottom of the display, which when turned portrait would offset the display.
I think it is similar for LG and Samsung as well.
I think overall its best to check the specs on each display to determine the best make/model. -

@sshank, I agree with Aaron on this one. You'll literally need to check the specs on each display model to make sure they have portrait capabilities.
That being said, most medium/higher level commercial monitors (for example, the NEC V-series or P-Series or X-Series) are ready and set for portrait orientation.
It's always best to call the manufacturer or go to their website to check display orientations.
In terms of pricing, there's lots of A/V distributors out there that can provide you with full price lists. Or you can always buy displays right online, but I don't fully recommend this unless you have a lot of trust for that vendor. -
