Hi we are running a test, and wish to know from the Risevision community which OS would be better in terms of overall performance Ubuntu or Windows 7 ?
Thanks

1Personally I don't have a favorite between the two, it's all up to the horsepower of the Display. Linux is certainly more reliable and not prone to OS issues like Windows, however Windows is much more user friendly if there is an issue.

I think 'better' is a little subjective. From a business standpoint, I would say Ubuntu is better. The reason is there are no licensing costs with Ubuntu. A legal & legit Win7 license is $200-300 per box. That's a deal breaker for any scaled deployment IMO.
Also, Linux is historically more reliable than any version of Windows. Even with windows7, I have to reboot it once a week. Never had issues like that with Linux. I've had Linux machines running for years w/o crashing or hanging.
I do have a strong Linux background, but mostly with Red hat and Fedora versions. I had never touched Ubuntu until taking on my first sign project with RiseVision. It's for sure the most desktop-user friendly version of Linux out there. There were a few bumps in the road I hit getting everything to work perfect (see my post scattered about these forums) but now it running smooth and solid. I'll just need to replicate my specific Ubuntu configuration across multiple player boxes and I'm good to go now.... without any fee per-box licensing model for the OS.

I would have to agree. Since our Player runs in both environments, if you are comfortable in Linux, and your hardware is meeting your expectations, the fact that Linux Ubuntu is free is quite a selling point, pardon the pun :).
