ERR_TIMED_OUT

This is probably something obvious, but after successfully creating a presentation, and creating the display and schedule, when I download the RiseVisionPlayer and install on Win 7, I have problems. The player seems to start, and starts Chromium (can't say I understand what that is vs. Chrome), I get:

This webpage is not available because rvashow.appspot.com is not responding.

Says to retry (which doesn't help), tried F5 based on this forum (doesn't help),

Bottom error message is Err 7 (net:ERR_TIMED_OUT).

What I really enjoy is the chrome style message telling me to hit the wrench menu and try setting the proxy.....from within "Chromium". I have Chrome (which has a wrench menu, internet works fine with proxy set correctly, same for Firefox), but I don't have any "Chromium" anywhere to even begin to start changing the proxy. I suspect the RiseVisionPlayer is using Chromium internally and failing.

    HI there,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Typically a timed out message simply means that it gave up trying to access the site after a specific period of time. If it happens right away when the Presentation starts, it typically means it is being blocked.

You may want to take a read of the Windows Optimization post and make sure your machine meets all the criteria. Also turn off any firewall that may be running on the Display to see if that is the issue.

It sounds like you DO have a proxy to access the internet on, is that correct? You will have to allow the appropriate sites through the Proxy server to ensure that the Presentation will come up. The information on that can be found here.

You may want to make sure that port 8123 is open on the local machine and nothing is blocking it, as this is the port that our Player uses to cache video and images to the Display.

I hope that helps, let us know if you continue to have trouble.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the fast feedback!

Yes, we have a proxy, but since it is set correctly on the system and all browsers act OK, I figured that was not a likely source.

A question about this: If chrome can display the link (http://bit.ly....) that is created when I pick "Share", and that works from a browser on the display machine, then wouldn't that mean the proxy and firewall are passing things OK?

Not necessarily. The Player uses the proxy program called Polipo which is installed with the Player, so I wonder if this is where the issue lies. And just to confirm, the Share button you are referring to is in the Presentation Preview bar, correct?

Are you sure that port 8123 is open on the Display? This is the port that the Polipo proxy program uses. You can read all about how our Displays use it here.

Let me know if that helps.

    Thanks!

AHA! I think I have the answer.

Since you are using your own proxy, and our Player uses the Polipo Proxy, you need to update the config file for our Proxy to know how to get out.

Open the config file with notepad in the rvplayer\polipo folder. In Windows 7 it is located here: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\rvplayer\polipo

And add this to the end of the config file
    parentProxy=host:port

where host is address of the proxy and port is the port that you use.

Reboot your Display, and that should fix it. Let me know if that fixes it for you.

    Thanks!

Hi Robb, I'm experiencing the same problem under Windows XP. Could you please tell me where I can find the rvplayer\polipo? I tried to look for it, but I didn't find it.

    Thanks

  • You can find the location in XP here C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\RVPlayer\Polipo.

    Thanks!

As an update to this: I find that under Ubuntu, this solution works, and my display runs 90% of the time, no problem.

The system has a cron job that relaunches every 2 hours. What i"ve noticed is that about 1 or 2 times per day, it fails. It displays the typical message ("This webpage is not available, Chromium could not load the webpage because rvashow.appspot.com took too long...").

When this happens, hitting "reload" works, every time. This is good, but it's also bad, because I have to go physically access the display server, usually 1-2 times every 1-2 days.

Generally, my internet is 99.999% reliable,.so I think this is a sensitivity issue between chromium, flash, and the rvashow.appspot.com server.

Are there settings I could increase for this, to help let it avoid it?

The Player cron job runs every 10 minutes, checking for Player, Flash, Polipo and Chromium updates. It does not use any 2 hour intervals, so I don't think this cron job is related to the Rise Vision Player.

I haven't had this same issue occur on my Display, and I have let Linux run for significant amounts of time.

Is it possible this cron job is a result of being in your proxy environment or some other software installed on the computer?

Actually, I changed the cron job to start every 2 hours from the 10 minute default. It is related to the player restart, because the cron is every 2 hours on the 41 minute mark, and I see the failure message, when it does occur, right after the 41 minute mark. We have a video widget included, that video takes 18 minutes to run, so I needed a larger interval.

Other sources are possible, but again, connectivity quality is good, and hitting reload almost always works....so I think there is a timing issue somewhere. It might be a chromium setting for how long it tries....I have not adjusted that, but I could.

The cron job that runs every 10 minutes does not restart the Player on the Display, only the scheduled restart will restart Player on the Display. Therefore it should not affect the 18 minute video widget.

Were you seeing strange results when the cron job was set to 10 minutes?

Yes, the occassional restart failure occurred at the 10 minute marks sometimes also. From what I recall, the video seemed to queue from the beginning when it restarted, but I could be wrong.

Generally, the restart takes long enough (20-40 seconds) that having it restart every 10 minutes also seemed like more restart time than optimal.

Yes, if the Presentation restarts, it will start up the first Gadgets or items it can load, and all of them will start at the beginning again, so that is the expected behavior.

Since I haven't been able to recreate this issue in my environment, is it possible to test to see if this happens on a Display that is not inside the proxy environment?
